To be put off by date eating pub leftovers

I have never posted on here before so please be gentle! 😉 I just wanted some honest opinions from people. I've been seeing a man for a number of months. We went out yesterday to a pub for something to eat, at lunchtime. When we got there, the table next to us hadn't been cleared yet and there was quite a bit of food left on plates. I asked him what he wanted to eat for lunch, and he said he would just eat some leftover toast and sausages from the uncleared table. I thought he was joking and laughed. But he actually meant it. He took two pieces of left over, cold toast and some sausages and proceeded to eat them, with no plate. I said I would buy him lunch and he didn't need to eat leftovers! He said he couldn't stand wasted food. I ordered my own lunch and ate it, alone, as he had already gobbled up the leftovers from the people who had left. Would this put you off someone? Or should I more be accommodating?! In all honesty, it made me feel very uncomfortable and I found it very unattractive. How would this make you feel, can I ask? Look forward to hearing what people think. For context, he has never done this before, but has alluded to wanting to do it when we've been to other places. I asked him yesterday if he was worried that someone's saliva might be on the leftover food, but he said he couldn't care less.

The only way this could be even vaguely forgivable is if he actually works in the field of charity/food repurposing (ie the Olio app, maybe foodbanks?)

But even then, i'd dump him for thinking it's ok to leave me sitting there eating alone. Ruuuuuuuuude.

Monetm · 06/11/2023 21:35

Is there any relevant context, before you rush to dump him? Did he grow up in poverty or with money really tight?

This. Was he fed leftovers as a child?

Sauslages · 07/11/2023 18:17

Reminds me of a couple I used to know. They would save money on holiday by waiting outside restaurants for large groups of people to leave, then asking the staff if they could eat the leftovers on the table. Most of the time the staff would say yes (in disbelief, most likely!).

I really wish I was joking, but if you met these people you would know they were being totally serious.

I also used to work at a well known cheap pub chain. One of the workers used to eat leftovers before sending the dirty plates down to the kitchen.

Some people are just gross. There are plenty of people who aren’t- find yourself one of those!

Flannyfaps · 07/11/2023 18:27

Okay I am in the minority here but this wouldn’t bother me! Waste not, want not. I don’t think I would do it, but it would t bother me if someone else did

But OP if it’s out you off then you don’t need anyone else to tell you that’s wrong. If youre no longer attracted to him, you don’t need justification for why. Xx

FrenchieFan · 07/11/2023 18:30

Sorry but who the hell are the 2% that says this is okay? SHOW YOURSELVES

Honestly though hun, that’s utterly disgusting. I would of left there and then if I hadn’t died from the absolute shame. It’s one thing to eat your leftovers, but a random strangers from an empty table? That is absolutely shocking and beyond okay.

Blades2 · 07/11/2023 18:31

That’s absolutely disgusting.
i worked in a bar and one of the barmen used to do this too.
dump him immediately 🤢

DoooooWhoop · 07/11/2023 18:34

This happened once when I was on holiday in New York. Some guy lost his dinner and then ten minutes later the guy who bought the food returned to the table to eat it... He's been in the toilet queue! He was well pissed off.

BardRelic · 07/11/2023 18:38

I'm beginning to think that if people were as horrified by food waste as they are at the thought of someone eating leftover sausages, the planet wouldn't be as fucked as it is.

Frostine · 07/11/2023 18:39

He is probably also a road kill eater , never eat a homemade casserole / roast at his
house !

Stressybetty · 07/11/2023 18:42

DH saying it's not nice or socially acceptable to do this and not creating a good impression for his date. Might be tightfisted or hating food waste. Would really put me off, cold congealed food. Disgusting.

PramPusherCentral · 07/11/2023 18:42

Those who have enjoyed one night stands and kissed and had intercourse with organs that also produce human waste, why are untouched left overs unhygienic? The chances of picking up an incurable disease from that are slim to none. As for a one night stand, wel…

I have no skin in the game. I wouldn’t eat left overs in a pub and would try not to judge someone who did, they hardly killed a baby.

Is this even a serious question? You think having sex with someone you chose to have sex with is the same as taking the waste food from someone you don’t know, that’s just laying on a table?

not sure what that says about your sex life 😱

spiderlight · 07/11/2023 12:16

I will confess that DH and I did once swipe several left-over scones from someone's fancy cream tea at a very expensive hotel, but (a) we had bought our own food and drinks and were sitting at the table next to the othe rpeople before they left, so we knew the scones hadn't been handled/sneezed on, and (b) no way in hell would I do it on a first date!!

How is that anybody better? It's still being tight and you knew it was skanky or you would have asked them.

deadrave · 07/11/2023 18:54

YANBU. It’s unhygienic and grim. It’s also really tight unless he’s in an absolutely dire financial situation eg homeless. I couldn’t date someone like that so I’d be calling it a day!

I don’t do one night stands because I’ve read the statistics and STDs are rife in major UK cities. Most carriers themselves don’t even know they have it. I prefer to get to know someone and get ourselves checked out before intimacy.

Each to their own.

That would give me the ick so much I’d feel myself slam shut like a startled oyster.

OMG this has me in tears laughing.

And I agree wholeheartedly!

😂😂😂

fetchacloth · 07/11/2023 19:14

Wow, just the thought of that seriously gives me the ick. Even my cat would have more manners than that!
I think I would walk away if I was you as he's likely to do it again and show you up in the process.😫

Johnisafckface · 07/11/2023 19:24

Nasty. When I was young and had sleepovers, my dad would eat what was left on my friend's plates. I never looked at him the same after seeing that.

Ilovecashews · 07/11/2023 19:24

Can you imagine a lifetime with him of similar behavior? Fuck me I'd rather eat alone. I am all for saving the world from waste, but there is a limit. What if that food had fallen on the floor? People had sneezed on it. A toddler had licked it. Boak!

Oldheadyoungshoulders · 07/11/2023 19:24

It doesn't really matter what we think. Your feelings are what counts.

LalaPaloosa · 07/11/2023 19:26

Deal breaker! That’s disgusting
