Gym response to being flashed in ladies changing room?

Yajebbend · 06/11/2023 21:16

A male entered the female changing room and flashed at me late last Saturday night. I was alone and naked. I reported to the gym who have said that they checked the cameras three times and can’t see a male entering. It must be on there somewhere it happened, I’m raging about it and the response. I want him identified so I can report to police.

aibu to think this isn’t good enough

Report it to the police and let them investigate it. You don't need to do any sleuth work yourself.

What definition of “male” are the gym staff using?

Exactly. I bet the gym staff know damn well who was in that changing room and who flashed you, but TWAW doncha know and Doris Danglewood is a woman, so it couldn't possibly be her.

The police will access the cctv.

Which sadly I expect will be long gone by now . Bit like when you need your medical notes and any relevant pages go missing etc

Yep, pretty much.

You report the incident to the Police and tell the gym that you have done so.

Pineapplepots · 06/11/2023 22:39

This is not the flex you think it is. Bragging about a violent partner beating someone up on your say so. You sound like Neanderthals.

OP I am so sorry this happened to you. I would definitely contact the police, not that they are always great with this sort of thing sadly. I would also not let up with the gym, can you take your complaint higher?

Nope, good on them. Men don't even get locked up for rape, what are they going to do about a flasher?

The man who murdered and raped Sarah Everard was also a flasher.

Your ex is a hero. He perhaps stopped a future rapist. Bravo!

The term 'flasher' trivialises the crime. It's a sexual offence and this man is a perpetrator of sexual abuse. It's not a funny, Carry On Flashing type of victimless crime - they intend to cause fear in their victims, that's the main. motivation.

Also, to paraphrase Alfie Moore, indecent exposure "is often a gateway offence to other more serious sexual crimes". It's not your responsibility to stop him, OP, but it's the reason this crime should* *always be taken seriously by the police.

[Alfie Moore, It's A Fair Cop series 6 episode "Exposure" - funny and informative re: police powers and response to crime).

There is a man who uses David Lloyd in Kingston Upon Thames. 21ish. He uses the swimming pool wearing a bralet and men's trunks. He changes in to his men's clothes in the women's changing rooms while watching the women undress. I don't go there - a neighbour told me. David Lloyd hates women.

Rosiem2808 · 07/11/2023 09:54

My daughter and I did not join the David Lloyd gym near to us for similar reasons. We had guest passes so we could see what it was like. Creepy men joining us in the sauna and the jacuzzi, asking my daughter for her number, asking me to ask her for a date..hanging around when she was on the treadmill, things like that.
The worst one was the man who tried talking to us in the gym and then hung around in reception waiting for us to leave, looking for the car in the car park ( we had ducked down in the seats) and then on spotting us - running after the car. Staff never saw anything on camera.

Onethingatatime23 · 07/11/2023 10:07

There are gyms (PureGym) where you can go 24/7 and often it is not staffed - mine often is on a Saturday afternoon when I go, never mind at 3am (when I most definitely do not go).

It relies on CCTV and people generally behaving themselves, and being identifiable through their membership. I hope they would take any report like this extremely seriously. It all falls to bits if women are harassed and attacked.

StaunchMomma · 07/11/2023 10:24

The gym are trying to avoid controversy.

Report to the Police asap and tell them the gym are being obstructive. Hopefully they can get a hold of that CCTV footage.

Not a nice thing to go through and, as flashers tend to escalate, really worrying for female members of that club.

What do you mean @Conkersinautumn ? Are you saying @Yajebbend is lying?

Redshoeblueshoe · 07/11/2023 10:50

Jeez I think that is exactly what conkers is saying.

jeffgoldblum · 07/11/2023 10:53

A phobia used to mean an ( sometimes) irrational fear that you cannot help, for example I'm terrified of spiders.
Why is it now added to things that people are clearly not afraid of ?

Who's making what up?
Are you saying you think the Op is lying about what happened?

Or that other posters are lying about a female 'appearance' being used by males to access female spaces?
Isla Bryson says it all, create a loophole and a rapist will exploit it.

Even if Op has made it up. DL are playing with fire if they have changing room policies based on appearance rather than sex. I wouldn't like to be in their position trying to defend a serious assault or rape on their premises because they gave males access to female open plan changing rooms.

Shroedy · 07/11/2023 11:05

I think @Conkersinautumn is probably pointing out the OP has at no point said or suggested that the person was trans or female-presenting and yet this has been inferred / assumed by lots of people on this thread. Just a thought...

QuizzlyBears · 07/11/2023 11:09

The trans hate on this thread is intense - the gym aren’t paying attention to the OP, and neither are half the people replying here because they’re shadowing the post with their own transphobic agenda. At no point has the OP said the individual was transgender.

ButterCrackers · 07/11/2023 11:10

Report this crime to the police.

Sugarfree23 · 07/11/2023 11:10

@Shroedy this is true a towel is a fairly unisex item.

Op needs to go to the police and get them to conduct an investigation rather than getting DL to do it.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/11/2023 11:19

Those making accusations of transphobia..how is DL or the OP meant to tell the difference between a naked man and a naked transwoman so she doesn't make any false accusations. You have the answers right?

Shroedy · 07/11/2023 11:23

What accusation needs to be made other than a man came from outside the changing room in a towel, flashed OP and left? There ia literally nothing to suggest this has anything to do with any debate on transgender issues that has any relevance to any accusation that would be made?

Talk about hearing hooves and thinking zebras.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/11/2023 11:27

It has everything to do with it.

The possible outcomes here are

A man went in to flash women in the womens changing room

The op and DL are working from different definitions of man/male hence the confusion/cover up

A man went in and could lie about being trans to cover his crime

It was a transwomen.

They came from outside the changing room rather than using it as a woman and the OP has said nothing about their being trans or female presenting. Unless she updates to say otherwise, pray tell on what basis would DL's position be based on a differing view of what a woman is?

Yup, hear hooves and think Zebras.
