To tell you the Scottish Govt are targeting 18 year old girls for egg harvesting

Yes, really.

Surrogacy Concern broke the news on Friday night. I can’t actually believe it.

Over a month to come, the Scottish Govt are asking for egg and sperm donors as young as 18 to come forward in a series of targeted ads on social media and the radio. They’ve expanded IVF provision and - in their own words - have a supply and demand issue.

I’d heard of fertility clinics advertising (bad enough in my view) but for a national Govt to do this to women is staggering. Women can die from complications arising from OHSS, which can be caused by egg donation. A British woman died in 2006 as a result.

The ads don’t mention these risks; it’s all “be kind” “do something amazing”. I cannot actually believe a Govt could be this stupid. They’ve only just apologised for forced adoption!

Studies of the long-term impact of egg donation on donors have never been done, even though the practice dates back more than 30 years.

I’d love it if they only got trans identifying men turning up.

Now that Indy is dead I just can’t see the point of the SNP. I can’t wait until the next scottish election when we might get some grown up politicians with a bit of intelligence representing us.

Catsmere · 06/11/2023 05:29

@dumdededdumdum They should be sorry!

I believe that there has indeed been a shortage of sperm donors since the law was changed to allow people born from sperm donation to trace their donors. (Who on earth could have foreseen that?😬)
I wonder if the same will apply for people born as a result of egg donation? And if not, why not?
But promotion of surrogacy this way is a terrible idea anyway.

It does. When I donated I consented to it.

for me it wasn’t an issue as it was for a family member and no secret but yes it’s a clause

What in the Handmaid's tale?!?!

I really have had enough of the SNP/Greens.

They can hit up their beloved women with cocks for this one.

Porridgeislife · 06/11/2023 06:50

I really disagree with this as someone who had IVF. When I was going through it I got sepsis. The infection had rumbled on for 2-3 weeks after egg collection until I found myself very sick and hospitalised one weekend. The reputable clinic, who I paid, kept telling me my general feeling of unwellness & slight temperature in the afternoon was normal.

Thereafter I heard of a woman at a different clinic who died of sepsis after egg collection at around the same time I was unwell. Again she’d been told feeling unwell was to be expected. Given we were paying customers and still ignored, what hope does an egg donor have?

I do not believe for one second that they have a scarcity of sperm donors. This is all really aimed at very young women. Disgraceful.

There is a scarcity of sperm donors, ever since the anonymity law changed in 2006.

Mousespace · 06/11/2023 07:30

I got this advert the first day of the campaign and was shocked to see it! I get private egg donation adverts but it was nuts to see one from the government. No mention on their wee site of the side effects. Are they going to offer the women that donate extra or earlier cancer screenings or health checks? I doubt it.
I reported the advert to meta as I do with all the private ones.

It must be vaguely terrifying being a woman in Scotland unless of course you're the kind with a cock and balls.

It's really not.

MumblesParty · 06/11/2023 07:34

I would love it if a man identifying as a woman turned up wanting to donate eggs. How would they turn him away without committing a hate crime?!

OhhHKay · 06/11/2023 07:35

😂

Spareus · 06/11/2023 07:38

Scotland is a skip fire thanks to the SNP. Arseholes.

nothingcomestonothing · 06/11/2023 07:39

So in Scotland penis havers up to age 25 can rape 14 year olds and receive no jail time because their brains aren't fully developed, but 18 year olds can consent to undergo potentially dangerous medical regimens to benefit strangers? Sounds legit.

Please complain to the advert standards authority - it’s quite easy- here.

I e been through egg collection for IVF (unsuccessful). It is not a benign procedure. I did a “mild version” where you don’t down regulate your cycle for 2 weeks first, but even then it involves daily injections for a couple of weeks, plus a final boost injection. 3 transvaginal check-ups in that time. Plus a procedure under sedation that left me bruised and needing to rest for 3 days. I reacted badly to the hormones with terrible skin rashes, and feeling like I had the worst PMT 24 hours a day.

The mild version I did aimed to get around 5 - 8 eggs. Some more invasive versions can end up with women over producing up to 30 eggs. This can have horrible consequences for future fertility.

Women’s hormones are a delicate and finely tuned system. If you over-stimulate, even mild form of IVF count as over stimulation, this can have future consequences later on such as early menopause (which I experienced).

It’s an entirely different thing from a man providing a sample in a cup.

And I totally get the pain of infertility. I’ve had to come to terms with never having biological children. I still don’t think surrogate on a commercial scale is the answer to infertility.

Surrogacy Concern have tweeted about who you can write to about this as a Scottish resident.

x.com/surrogconcern/status/1721432983347847584?s=46

"Good morning everyone,

To our followers in Scotland, you may wish to email your MSP today, asking them to publicly condemn @scotgov’s egg harvesting ad campaign.

You can contact Michael Matheson MSP, Cabinet Health Secretary, here: [email protected]"

MumblesParty · 06/11/2023 07:53

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with asking people if they want to be volunteers for egg and sperm donation. There has been a shortage of both since the anonymity law changed. For sperm donation I think a campaign is a good idea, as it may result in more donors. However I think it’s probably a waste of money promoting egg donation, as the number of woman prepared to be altruistic donors is vanishingly small, for all the reasons mentioned (painful, risky etc).

PinkNailpolish · 06/11/2023 08:16

OhcantthInkofaname · 06/11/2023 01:06

Donation? Young, college age, educated women in the US are well paid for donations.

That's even worse. Young women who are struggling for money and taken advantage of. Egg 'donation' is basically ivf but without getting pregnant. There are a lot of risks that come with it. It can also affect a young woman's fertility. Young poor women taken advantage of just because older women can't get pregnant with their own egg.

I'm in my 20s and I've seen sponsored ads for egg donation on my social media. It doesn't NHS though (I'm in England so it's disgusting that Scottish NHS is endorsing egg donation).

OhhHKay · 06/11/2023 08:22

You have hit the nail on the head. You’re still quite impressionable in your 20s and you need protection not exploitation which is what this is. I can’t believe (well, I’d believe any trying these days) the Scottish government can do this.
Not one shit given for the girl, let’s face it, who may have future mental distress because of a decision (likely made due to financial distress) made in her youth.
If you get to 40/50, 30 or whatever without carrying a child then do the decent thing and accept it. It’s not anyone else’s duty to deal with your infertility. Too much messing with nature, people will get what’s coming to them with a society full of gene mutations and dysfunction. May as well just allow AI to take over now, I’ll hide my magnet.
