To tell you the Scottish Govt are targeting 18 year old girls for egg harvesting

Yes, really.

Surrogacy Concern broke the news on Friday night. I can’t actually believe it.

Over a month to come, the Scottish Govt are asking for egg and sperm donors as young as 18 to come forward in a series of targeted ads on social media and the radio. They’ve expanded IVF provision and - in their own words - have a supply and demand issue.

I’d heard of fertility clinics advertising (bad enough in my view) but for a national Govt to do this to women is staggering. Women can die from complications arising from OHSS, which can be caused by egg donation. A British woman died in 2006 as a result.

The ads don’t mention these risks; it’s all “be kind” “do something amazing”. I cannot actually believe a Govt could be this stupid. They’ve only just apologised for forced adoption!

AIBU?

@VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia

A side effect of joining the army can include debilitating injury and death.

Same with egg donation.

Chromium24 · 06/11/2023 00:38

@VestaTilley Proof ?

Is your opinion seriously that male lives are inherently less valuable than female? If that is the case, I don’t think there is any point in continuing this conversation.

The point is not about who makes more sense to recruit as a soldier. Is is that the government commodifies and endangers everyone indiscriminately, not just women specifically.

This is...I'm gobsmacked.

Brilliant! 👏🏻

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 06/11/2023 00:42

the government has ever been above treating citizens as commodities

The State commanders women's uteruses already to create new citizens. We know from China's One Child Policy what happens when the State decides that women are having too many children, and from Romania's Decree 770 what happens when the State decides that we are having too few.

Promotion of egg harvesting is a new low in this State abuse of women's bodies, with novel risks to women that aren't encountered during naturally-concieved pregnancy.

Why am I not surprised that Scotland comes up with this?

Only in reproductive terms. This is a fact of biology, not morality. Morally, everyone is of equal worth. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is very clear on that.

One of the "fun" aspects of war is that survival of the nation state trumps individual's rights. That's why the Ukrainian govt told the women to flee but the men to stay and fight. The women's uteruses and ovaries need to be protected from Russian rape and murder in order for new Ukrainians to be born. The men's testicles, less so.

THEDEACON · 06/11/2023 00:47

What an utterly ridiculous post you make it sound like the Government of Scotland of Scotland is going door to door demanding that eighteen year olds be sent out to have their eggs harvested by force ! Away and crawl back under your rock

Given that no one has the right to a child, the Scots govt have no business promoting sperm or egg donation.

The Armed Forces are a necessary national institution. There is no need for surrogacy.

Egg GIF

If trans women are women then they should form an orderly queue to donate eggs,

.................. oh wait, no one in the history of the world has ever had a successful sex change operation.

You do know it is being promoted in England NHS last/this month too? Or is it just the "bad SNP" that is the issue?

OhcantthInkofaname · 06/11/2023 01:06

Donation? Young, college age, educated women in the US are well paid for donations.

I live under a rock, so if it's not been turned into a thread on here, I don't know about it.

But if NHS England are doing this, they can fuck off too.

krustykittens · 06/11/2023 00:28

Any one else really sick of hearing the words "Be kind" being aimed at women, normally to make them give up their sex-based rights without a murmur, or in this case, to sign up for risky medical procedures. No one ever seems to tell men to be kind on a regular basis or through a fucking national ad campaign. I am sick of it. The SNP can stick "Be Kind" up their arse, along with this campaign.

This 💯%.

OhcantthInkofaname · 06/11/2023 01:06

Donation? Young, college age, educated women in the US are well paid for donations.

And poor women overseas are paid a relative pittance to do the gestating whilst enduring undue restrictions on what they can eat and do and even where they go.

There's a lot of money to be made exploiting women's uteruses, and the women don't see much of it.

"Altruistic" surrogacy isn't without ethical and practical problems either. Imagine if your friend or DSis agreed to carry for you and then aborted because her health was at severe risk, what that would do to your relationship? What if the child is diagnosed disabled in utero and the commissioning parents want to abort but the gestating mother doesn't want to?

Surrogacy is an ethical minefield and the only consistent and ethically robust way to handle it is to outlaw it.

DisquietintheRanks · 06/11/2023 01:30

Good job adult women have brains and agency, otherwise we'd really be in trouble.

Not so sure about that. No mention of "women" there, just "egg donors".

Under his eye.

Womanofmanycoats · 06/11/2023 01:36

Have to agree with @notouch.
A more accurate title would have been ‘the Scottish gov are targeting 18 year olds, 19.20, 21,22,23….35 year olds
For all we know clinical practice could actually be unofficially geared to ‘counselling out’ particularly young woman. But I imagine if they made 25 a cut off point ( or any age not based on medicine) then there would be an argument for age discrimination They can hardly decide an age based on guessed maturity
I am not disagreeing with your overall point re egg donation

DisquietintheRanks · 06/11/2023 01:30

Truly free choice is extremely rare in life. If you don't believe me, try "choosing" not to pay council tax and see how you get on.

Normalisation of surrogacy paves the way to commercialisation, at which point we get into "my poverty, but not my will consents" territory and free choice becomes very much illusory.

Well they may "know" but they aren't admitting it. Their explanation of surrogacy manages not to use the word "woman" once.

"You can use a surrogate"....

"A surrogate is someone who will have a baby for you"

Just like someone doing the gardening for you. 🤷‍♀️

dumdededdumdum · 06/11/2023 04:51

Is this the work of the "uber strange greens"? They're a total sorry.

dumdededdumdum · 06/11/2023 04:52

worry, not sorry.
