To tell you the Scottish Govt are targeting 18 year old girls for egg harvesting

Yes, really.

Surrogacy Concern broke the news on Friday night. I can’t actually believe it.

Over a month to come, the Scottish Govt are asking for egg and sperm donors as young as 18 to come forward in a series of targeted ads on social media and the radio. They’ve expanded IVF provision and - in their own words - have a supply and demand issue.

I’d heard of fertility clinics advertising (bad enough in my view) but for a national Govt to do this to women is staggering. Women can die from complications arising from OHSS, which can be caused by egg donation. A British woman died in 2006 as a result.

The ads don’t mention these risks; it’s all “be kind” “do something amazing”. I cannot actually believe a Govt could be this stupid. They’ve only just apologised for forced adoption!

Horrendous. It’s the SNP all over. Zero regard for a nuanced care of actual women.

And where is the money for these ads coming from?

Brightonhome · 05/11/2023 23:52

Simply appalling. The SNP showing their misogyny and utter lack of care towards young women. This is not a risk-free procedure, added to which, a young woman could bitterly regret her actions. This is worlds away from sperm donation.

nocoolnamesleft · 05/11/2023 23:53

Women's bodies are commodities.

ReaderIChangedMyName · 05/11/2023 23:56

Add it to the list of other sketchy shit the devolved gov/SNP- in coalition with the uber strange Greens- have (allegedly) been up to for a long time.

Brightonhome · 05/11/2023 23:59

I do not believe for one second that they have a scarcity of sperm donors. This is all really aimed at very young women. Disgraceful.

JL690 · 06/11/2023 00:05

The SNP claims to be progressive! Treating women as egg and baby factories is anything but progressive. They are a Frankenstein party.

VestaTilley · 06/11/2023 00:05

It’s utterly dystopian. The SNP are horrific.

Hannah Bardell MP spoke in a debate in Westminster last week where she asked about Govt progress on the (dreadful) surrogacy reforms - because (in her words) “access to surrogacy” is needed!!

What in the handmaids tale is this?

MangoLlama · 06/11/2023 00:13

I personally don’t see how this is any worse than government ads targeting young people (including under-18s!) to join as army recruits.

SiobhanSharpe · 06/11/2023 00:15

I believe that there has indeed been a shortage of sperm donors since the law was changed to allow people born from sperm donation to trace their donors. (Who on earth could have foreseen that?😬)
I wonder if the same will apply for people born as a result of egg donation? And if not, why not?
But promotion of surrogacy this way is a terrible idea anyway.

YouCantTunaFish · 06/11/2023 00:15

What the actual fuck? Every time I think the SNP can't go lower they continue to surprise me with their ability to fucking do it.

It isn't any worse, both those things are terrible.

SquirrelSoShiny · 06/11/2023 00:19

It must be vaguely terrifying being a woman in Scotland unless of course you're the kind with a cock and balls.

LuluBlakey1 · 06/11/2023 00:23

I loathe the SNP.

MangoLlama · 06/11/2023 00:24

@Hereforthebunfights
My point was that there is no need to pretend that

  1. the government has ever been above treating citizens as commodities
  2. that they are out to get women and girls in particular - men have been commodified and shipped off to die since the beginning of time

The current ruling party is of no consequence

IcakethereforeIam · 06/11/2023 00:24

Wait, so the SNP do know what a woman is?

This is...I'm gobsmacked.

krustykittens · 06/11/2023 00:28

Any one else really sick of hearing the words "Be kind" being aimed at women, normally to make them give up their sex-based rights without a murmur, or in this case, to sign up for risky medical procedures. No one ever seems to tell men to be kind on a regular basis or through a fucking national ad campaign. I am sick of it. The SNP can stick "Be Kind" up their arse, along with this campaign.

  1. A woman is born with a fixed number of eggs. If she donates some, she has fewer to bear her own children with.

  2. The hormone cocktails used to stimulate egg follicles have horrendous side effects.

“Be kind” is just another way of saying “shut your mouth and know your place, woman”.

Kingoftheroad · 06/11/2023 00:33

Nothing that this lot do surprises me - their excuse will be “we do it better than England” as with everything else. Bunch of creeps

In reproductive terms, men are far less critical than women. A man can shag his missus whilst on leave and die in combat the next week, but his missus will still have his baby, so he has successfully reproduced. Whereas if a pregnant woman is hit by a shell, her baby is lost too.

And a man can sire multiple children concurrently by making several women pregnant at the same time. Women seldom have multiple children in the same pregnancy.

It makes reproductive sense to recruit men as soldiers and not women.

MangoLlama · 06/11/2023 00:35

@VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia

A side effect of joining the army can include debilitating injury and death.

NoTouch · 06/11/2023 00:37

They are not actually "targeting" 18 year olds though are they?

They have an initial eligibility age range of 18-35. Potential donors will be told of the process and risks so they can make an informed decision.

If you dont believe in egg donation then fair enough but you dont need to make things up.
