Three Crumpets

AIBU or is there an unwritten rule that you eat crumpets in pairs? DH occasionally has a single crumpet. They come in sixes, so that often leaves a random spare crumpet that can’t be paired up. He says it’s normal.

The key to the toaster setting re. crumpets is to use the frozen bread button. Then maybe the warm up function for a little extra crisp, if necessary.

Very excited to see M&S do pikelets, I had a sudden craving for them in tesco, only to discover they don't stock them anymore!

Anyone that puts a savoury topping other than butter on a crumpet is clearly some kind of social deviant.

The correct toppings are

  • butter,
  • butter and honey or syrup
  • only honey or syrup if you are on a diet
Jam may be substituted in extremis but only if there is no honey or syrup, and only if the butter is already spread and then the potential crumpet consumer discovers there is no honey or syrup and really cannot deal with a butter only option. The post crumpet consumer must then purchase honey or syrup as soon as possible to prevent future no-honey-or-syrup-to-have-with-crumpets situations occurring.

I usually have 2 crumpets (toasted twice, so the toast setting is untouched).
BUT when packets of 9 crumpets are on offer, and cheaper than a packet of 6, I eat 3 at a time. The third one sits ontop of the toaster while the other 2 are cooking, and then only needs one round in the toaster.

topnoddy · 04/11/2023 08:33

Toast mine twice at 5 minute setting in pairs
I like the large ones but not the price of them

Susuwatariandkodama · 04/11/2023 08:37

I often eat 1 and my husband will sometimes have 3! 😂

StarlightLady · 04/11/2023 08:39

Buy in an additional crumpet supply and keep them in the freezer. They can be toasted from frozen as required.

Crumpets
I do love them.
With lovely salted Irish butter from grass fed cows.
Are they very fattening?

They are if the butter's thick enough to leave teeth marks in! 😋😆

Depends on whether you spread the butter or just lay it on top as slices.

I think the real issue is that you have to slightly crush a Waitrose Sourdough Crumpet to get it to fit in a Dualit toaster slot. (4 slot toaster, imagine eating four in a sitting!)

Oh the woes of the MC, 😂

MrsMurphyIWish · 04/11/2023 10:03

I’ve just eaten a single crumpet, never really thought it was the rage inducing. Maybe DH feels about me, as I do about him as he eats 3 weetabix each morning, and there will be certain days (as I have 2) that I go to the packet and there is just 1 left, and I have to spend precious seconds opening a new packet.

AuntieMarys · 04/11/2023 10:05

What are people's thoughts on shaped crumpets? I saw Teddy ones in Aldi this morning but bought my usual sourdough ones....more surface area

viques · 04/11/2023 10:12

Many years ago there was a lovely story about crumpets in Paris. Marks and Spencer had opened a food department and Paris residents were having fun seeing what English people ate in their natural habitat . Most things were approved of, except for crumpets which were universally slammed as inedible.

Bless, they were eating them raw.

Very funny!

No no no, they are best with cheese and marmite!

Pickingmyselfup · 04/11/2023 10:49

I have an issue with eating them in pairs because I buy a pack of 9. It's usually the kids that eat them and they have 2 each. All is fine until that last one. Who gets it if I don't want it?? They wouldn't accept it being cut in half, they wouldn't accept one having it but not the other...

Can the crumpet packing people not think of people with 2 children and my dilemma 😱

Actually what normally happens is that I buy them, they might have a couple one day then never want them again. I forget they are there so they are left to lurk in the breadbin and go mouldy. Sad times 😔

How can you possibly not love a crumpet with cheese and ham? Or just cheese if there is no ham.

I have never put a sweet topping on mine, it just feels wrong. It's butter or butter with the above. Lots of butter too so it all drips out. Heaven.

They freeze fine. Which means you can have a personal crumpet time whenever you want to. Mouldy crumpets in the bread bin are a crime against nature imo.

I’m team butter and something sweet. Ham and eggs and cheese have no more place on a crumpet than they do in a croissant. Je telephone a la police.

The butter has to melt, though, so slices are irrelevant.

Oh I also like a croissant with ham and cheese.

Dishwashersaurous · 04/11/2023 11:58

Would think eating then single as a snack would be average

Just realised when making cheesy crumpets for DD that the Warburtons Crumpet Thins come in packs of 8

But they're not good, don't toast well, similar to those thin bagels that Warbies sell too. A couple of years ago I recall seeing Christmas crumpets, shaped like a tree, don't know if they're a regular thing.

MrShady · 04/11/2023 12:22

I have 3
2 with toppings (peanut butter or cream cheese and ham or marmite) and 1 with just butter
I have no idea how I started doing this
