Just fucking sick of dogs

1000 replies

crazyaginglady · 03/11/2023 19:00

Sorry but I am. I was cycling home from
picking up DS from school with him on the back and a dog came running up beside
me snarling and snapping at my feet on the pedals. I nearly bloody went over but managed to keep my balance and get past it (electric bike). Owner called an apology and I just rode on as it was still off the lead and I was worried for DS.

This is a national cycling path and much used school route so there are always bikes and children 8-9 and 3-4.

A sausage dog decided to bolt towards my 2 year old last month in the park for no apparent reason and I had to scoop him
up to avoid contact.

And don’t get me started in the ‘oh he’s just being friendly’. I don’t want your fucking dog jumping on me or my children or scaring my kids when we are just going about our day.

They should ALL be on leads unless they are in a dog park/field.

To the posters who apparently have an actual random dog phobia and find all dogs repulsive... you do realise this is YOUR issue and not the dogs/owners?

I'm ridiculously scared of spiders, but I'm not ignorant enough to not realise they're actually very clever creatures and it's not their fault I'm irrationally frightened of them. I won't kill them, I'll vacate a room for a whole day if need be till someone can remove them. I've educated myself on them as I don't like the way they affect my life so will do anything to lessen it.

Dogs don't care if you hate them, nor do their owners. The only person affected by your bitterness towards them is yourself.

What about the majority who aren’t ‘phobic’ about dogs but who don’t want dogs attacking us, bothering us, scaring children, being around us when we eat, shitting on the streets and in parks, barking for hours, etc?

Is that our problem? Or is it a major and increasing antisocial nuisance created by dog owners and that the law should change to stop this nuisance? Seems pretty obvious the right answers are ‘no’ to the first and ‘yes’ to the second.

Stressedafff · 07/11/2023 13:55

Okay flip it on its head re phobias.

You’re scared of spiders, I am too, I’m pretty sure neither one of us would appreciate the owner of 2 tarantulas letting their spider climb all over us. No? Then why is it acceptable for a dog to jump up on people with the usual “he’s just friendly!” And if people object to that they’re in the wrong and it’s their problem.

I'm specifically responding to the numerous posters that say ALL dogs should be eradicated because they make them "gag", not just the ones with irresponsible owners.

That would be like me killing a harmless house spider because funnel webs exist.

But it's not your sofa. It's cafe nero's, so if they don't mind a bare butt hole that's their choice

It is just selfish to allow a dog to sit on a sofa in a public cafe. If it's a dog cafe well enough, but if not, then some poor person who may be severely allergic or has allergy induced asthma, may sit unknowingly in that sofa after they have left. I used to have allergy therapy and there was a woman getting her shots because her cat allergy was so severe, she'd go into anaphylaxis. As someone who has to carry an epi-pen due to having severe allergic reactions, I can tell you if I saw a person put their dog on the sofa in Cafe Nero, I'd be telling the staff in no uncertain terms that they are potentially putting their customer's health at risk. What's worse, Cafe Nero well knows the potential problems so tries to cover itself by saying it has an anti-dog policy, but for profit 'allows discretion' so you if you have an allergic to dog saliva and hair, you don't know what to expect, but if you have a serious asthma attack, presumably they can wash their hands.

People are more aware of food allergies (admittedly more serious more often but this is partly because of frequency of exposure) but for some reason people are dense when it comes to pet allergies.

Depends what law you're calling for really? No pet dogs at all? I'm all for proper licensing and hefty fines for dog fouling. I signed the petition to ban the XL bullies and would happily ban a few other breeds too.

Fair question.

I’d say expensive licensing, much wider dangerous breed bans, all dogs on leashes in public, all large dogs muzzled in public, no dogs allowed in premises serving food or selling food, as a start.

Any breaches of these and there should be confiscation of the dog and a lifetime ownership ban. As well as lifetime bans for the existing laws and by-laws on things like dog fouling.

Ylvamoon · 07/11/2023 15:09

I'd like to know where all these dogs are that keep jumping up on people.

I was in my local park this morning - dog walker central- not a single one came near me!
(They didn't bother with my dogs either...)

could say the same for many children and their parents, but I have a feeling if someone were to post the same thing about kids people would lose their shit, despite the fact that most kids are way more misbehaved than most dogs.

Edited

I haven’t read of many young kids mauling random strangers to death.

Busephalus · 07/11/2023 15:12

Or jumping up at you with muddy paws

mrlistersgelfbride · 07/11/2023 15:33

I hate dogs.

You can't say it in real life because people think you are an uncaring psychopath. I'm not. I love cats, rodents, birds, other small animals.
I just can't abide dogs and how as a nation we are expected to love them.
I actively go out of my way to avoid dogs, but it's difficult as they are everywhere. Go to the pub- dogs. Go to a cafe- dogs. Go to a bar -dogs. Go to a craft fayre- dogs!

I'm a runner. I'm sick of having to avoid parks because people insist on having dogs who will go for you as you run/walk past. I'm sick of taking my DD out for a walk or to the park in summer to be met by huge husky type dogs often unruly and very strong, with either scallies necking a can of Stella, or young girls who are trying to impress boys, controlling them.
These dogs could so easily attack children.
I give people dirty looks and I've been know to say 'Not everyone loves dogs, mate' but some people think it's hilarious.
Boils my piss.
It's gone too far, change the rules on dog ownership.

Mondaymorningtoday · 07/11/2023 16:22

Re the dog poop problem. Is nobody aware that a dog can be trained to poo in the same place?

An ex-neighbour of mine, a totally blind guy, told me that his Guide dog was trained to do this (he had a pen in the yard where he would take him) and I think it applies to all service dogs.

We had a dog when I was a child that always went to the same spot in the back garden to poo. (Admittedly, he did go sometimes go elsewhere when out on walks too.) Nobody trained him to go in the same place so I've no idea how he figured it out (though he was a Labrador/Alsatian cross so already halfway there with intelligence! 😀) but it does make me wonder. ..🤔

If service dogs can be trained to poo in the same place, can't other dogs be trained to go in their own garden???

coldcallerbaiter · 07/11/2023 16:49

The child vs dog comparison, wth? You were a child once so even if you do not have any kids, surely you cannot be serious.....I mean I do not eat meat myself but heck they eat dogs in some countries... they are animals, the same as a pig.

Yes there are too many people and people can be inconsiderate, see the pages on mumsnet about them, but it is a different issue to pet dogs being everywhere.

I walk in the street on some quiet roads, so as not to walk on the disgusting pavements, cannot cut through on grass in parks or walk on verges.

And the find a cafe that is dog free? - no, it should be the other way round. Glad when the other day I saw a garden centre cafe enforce the no dogs policy and the dog owner muttered that she did not see any signs saying no dogs. so assumed it was dog friendly.

Feduptryingusernames · 07/11/2023 18:23

I'm all for treating animals with respect however don't believe in human rights for dogs - they're DOGS not humans so stop being offended dog lovers if Joe public doesn't enthuse about your pet.

Delphinium20 · 07/11/2023 18:35

Just now, DH came home shaking angry. He'd been driving and saw a small boy walking home. A woman had her big pit bull who got away and charged the boy, biting his backpack. The woman couldn't control the dog so my husband had to stop his car and run to assist. As I noted earlier, DH trained our now gone dog and knows how to handle large breeds but he was scared cause the dog was out of control. Thankfully he got the dog to heel, and while the backpack is ruined, the boy is unharmed (though likely now pretty shook up). DH gave an earful to the woman how she needs to get this dog professionally trained. But she ran off while he was helping the boy. Can you believe it? She RAN away despite the fact this dog mauled a little boy?!? DH walked boy home and parents are going to try to find woman with dog and alert authorities.

Seriously I'm so angry. This should never have happened, but I remembered this thread so decided to share before it gets to 1000. Hopefully, all these anecdotes can make some action happen. As former dog owners, we'd be fully on board with stricter licensing of dogs. Some people have no business owning them.

sandyhappypeople · 07/11/2023 19:25

i love dogs, got 3 of them and I walked out of a shop today with my 3 year old and where we had to put the trolley back was a couple stood with a hulk of a dog straining at its harness, they could see we needed to get past but just stood there saying ‘don’t worry, he’ll only slobber on you, he’s not dangerous’ I ignored her and pointedly walked my little one into the car park then back up the kerb with the trolley to go round them.

some people really are thick..as..shit.

the thing that infuriates me more that I can say is harnesses on big dogs.. they’re fucking POINTLESS, on a collar, held close, a dog can have no more that a 1 foot reach, an arms length at most, and you can control the direction of the head, on a harness they have an arms length AND the length of their own body to lunge, so have a good 4-5 foot reach and the owner has no control over what their head (and jaws) are doing at the end of that lead, they also have an enormous amount of pulling power to pull free if they so wish.. and they do.

If I see powerful dogs being walked on harnesses I know they are to be avoided at all costs, because their owners are fucking stupid.

Very good point.
Most dogs ( those with a modicum of intelligence) can be trained to use a spot.
Gutter if outside on the street - if in a built up area- then bagged and binned.
They tend to use a specific spot so that should make it easier.
Pooing in own garden is fine
Some owners don’t like that though!

If a dog ( and cat too) is regularly wormed it keeps worm egg count down as well.

Gross as it sounds many dogs and cats aren’t wormed frequently enough.
Just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there in the gut.

An ‘actual random’ dog phobia is actually a very reasonable one. Dogs can be dangerous and are increasingly badly trained. Totally rational to worry about them especially the ones who keep killing humans.

Youre scared of spiders - ok we’ll imagine if I came up to you in the street with my tarantula let it jump all over you whilst I shouted “it’s ok he’s friendly” and got snotty if you didn’t coo over him. That would be a YOU problem, right?

Personally I think I’d dogs were to be eradicated it’s because keeping them as pets is selfish, cruel and breeding is increasingly immoral, illegal and dispicable practice.

YinrunIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/11/2023 20:18

I’m not a dog fan but I have friends with very well behaved dogs who are sick of their dog just nicely minding their own business on a walk, being well behaved and some demented Twattadoodle or whatever people call mongrels these days, come and bother and jump and the well behaved dogs. My friend gets very pissed off - I don’t blame her.
