Just fucking sick of dogs

1000 replies

crazyaginglady · 03/11/2023 19:00

Sorry but I am. I was cycling home from
picking up DS from school with him on the back and a dog came running up beside
me snarling and snapping at my feet on the pedals. I nearly bloody went over but managed to keep my balance and get past it (electric bike). Owner called an apology and I just rode on as it was still off the lead and I was worried for DS.

This is a national cycling path and much used school route so there are always bikes and children 8-9 and 3-4.

A sausage dog decided to bolt towards my 2 year old last month in the park for no apparent reason and I had to scoop him
up to avoid contact.

And don’t get me started in the ‘oh he’s just being friendly’. I don’t want your fucking dog jumping on me or my children or scaring my kids when we are just going about our day.

They should ALL be on leads unless they are in a dog park/field.

Now, that’s playing dirty, Bobsleigh, and you know it.

Some mutt had the runs at the bottom of my drive. Blithely left there for me to chuck water and disinfectant over. Repulsive

My poor dog would HATE to live in the wild! He doesn't even like the cold let alone rain ☔️ and (heaven forbid) snow ❄️ He prefers snoozing on the electric blanket cuddled up to a human on the sofa 😂 He really wouldn't make it in the wild.

Mine neither!
She is well trained and unobtrusive though and I am very aware that people may well not like dogs.
I once had a Whippet who got locked out all night by mistake.
He never barked - He used to sleep in my son’s bedroom so assumed he was there.

Next morning I thought it was odd he wasn’t ready for breakfast and he was by the back door- hair fluffed out as much as is possible for a Whippets- and he had made an earth scrape in the lee of a wall-
He had peat on his fur.
The other dog didn’t let me know either!
I felt very guilty.
He survived one night in the garden and wasn’t impressed.
Thank goodness it wasn’t raining.

I like dogs, do not have one but know plenty who do.
However today at a cafe someone on a table behind me was sitting on the 2 sofas facing each other with 3 dogs, all of which were sitting on the sofas too, which I genuinely found shocking, I could not believe the owner genuinely thought that was acceptable. ( in your own home okay if you want but not in a public cafe)
I had to move away to a different table as I would have said something but a staff member cleared his tray and did not say anything so may have not wanted the confrontation.
I looked at the sign on way out which just said dog friendly - do cafe owners now have to add keep off furniture now too for idiots like him ?
Really put me off going again.

Sounds like you may have some deep seated issues you need help with. Honestly it can’t be fun gagging just looking at a picture of a dog. Maybe counselling would help?

To be fair that’s a bit much. My dogs wouldn’t be allowed to sit in seats in a cafe. Well, maybe the little one on my lap but not jumping all over where others have to sit. Their feet have been outside and you wouldn’t put your own shoes on the sofas in a cafe.

You really don't have things you really dislike the look of?
That make you go a bit yuk inside.
Spiders, slugs? For me it's dogs (for dp it's millipedes)

honestly not to the point I would gag just looking at a picture, no.

that sounds more than just something you don’t like the look of to me.

Those dogs in the 'lounge' look very bored - one of them looks downright miserable.

KimberleyClark · 05/11/2023 12:40

It wasn’t a one way process. Wolves with more social genes realised they could get something out of hanging around humans in return for guarding, helping to hunt etc.

So you agree it was a choice made by wolves to begin with?

Therefore you must agree that they have zero choice now?

Especially given that we have bred away any natural ability to survive outdoors. Some people upthread have said their dogs don't even like a bit of cold or rain!

We have made them dependent on us. That is not fair.

We've basically enslaved them by removed all their natural ability to survive, creating cruel breeds that can't jump, breather or even walk properly.

I think it's terrible what we've done to the natural dog species and breeds.

H007 · 05/11/2023 19:16

This post just makes me realise that whether you like dogs or not, and whether dogs like you or not is probably the best way of judging a persons character 😆

What do you propose we do about thousands of years of evolution? I agree the brachycephalic breeds are quite a cruel evolution and wouldn’t own one for that reason, but what do you propose? Put them all down? Stop breeding what are essentially mostly happy human companions? Most dogs aren’t suffering because they’ve evolved to live with humans.

I certainly couldn’t be returning my dogs or my cat for that matter back to the wild, they wouldn’t survive (unless they found another human to care for them).

What is your solution then?
There are approx 12 million pet dogs in the UK.

BarneyAteMyHomework · 05/11/2023 19:36

I would like to see breeding severely restricted (or at least the current rules strictly enforced) and all dogs of the more extreme brachycephalic breeds neutered so no more dogs can be bred from those lines.

Also ban foreign rescue dogs from coming into the UK. We have enough dogs in our own rescues.

I also think breeding should be government controlled also
You should have to apply and be assessed and be allocated according to your circumstances. Not to what you find cute.

Assessment costs to be paid by person applying whether they are successful or not.

We just need some modicum of control

jasminocereusbritannicus · 05/11/2023 19:48

I too am a dog owner who totally agrees with you! My dog is always on a lead . Whilst we were at a holiday park in the summer , I took her for a walk after it had turned dark, at about 9:45pm. Out of nowhere, a big muscular dog ( Rottweiler?? XL Bully??) ran out between the vans and grabbed my dog ( a Lhasa Apso) across her back and shook her!!! I thought I was watching my dog die. Somehow I got the dog off her and ran back to our caravan, screaming! She had deep lacerations either side of her abdomen. The dog ran off to god knows where( however it had a harness on!) We had to take her to an emergency vets, where they kept her in for 2 nights. Sadly, nobody found the dog, but everyone around us was worried, because they all had small kids. I hate to think what would have happened if one of them had been outside.
As a result, I’m £1,500 worse off due to vets fees. I am however lucky that my 10 and half year old dog is still around, but it was a bit touch and go as she went into shock.
Im terrified of dogs that are off leads , particularly big dogs, now.
I get it, that your dog may be your big, loveable baby, but no dog is 100% trustworthy, especially around children. They can only take so much being pulled about or squealing .
And even though your dog has bounded up and is “just being friendly” , have some thought for others sensibilities( including other dogs).

The "natural dog species" only exists because of domestication. Overbreeding is awful, but it's a completely separate issue from the existence of domestic dogs. Pet dogs don't want to go into the wild. My dog lives a happy life where she never needs to worry about where her next meal is coming from, and where she gets treatment for injuries and her physical and mental health are carefully looked after. And importantly, she lives with the people she loves, and experiences joy every day. It's not a cruel existence. She was literally bred to enjoy being a companion.

A lot of dog rescues do this already. You have a home check, and they see what dogs are suitable for you. Or you can apply for a particular dog, and if a good match, you do get to adopt them.
No reputable rescue would let you adopt just because you like the look of the dog. You absolutely have to be a good match for each other.

trythisforsize · 05/11/2023 19:57

@XenoBitch @Ohhelpicantthinkofaname

I am not here to propose a 'solution' to the way dogs have become totally dependent on humans.

I was merely asking if people this this is unfair on dogs as a species?

We have literally bred them for our own gains: to look exactly how we want them to look and to perform and work as we want them to.

(by the way - this isn't evolution any more than a chicken has evolved to grow from chick to market weight in 48 days)

So - is it fair, or is it unfair that we have made a species dependent on us and bred away it ability to survive in the wild?

RelationshipOrNot · 05/11/2023 19:59

I don't see anything morally wrong with domestication, especially mutual domestication as happened with dogs.

That's fine if people only get rescues and use up the dogs we have.
It's the continual breeding of designer dogs that is the bigger problem.

People want more, we breed more
People want a particular cross, we breed it
People want a puppy, not an older dog, we breed it.
