Why can’t women have pockets?

MarmitePizza · 03/11/2023 18:15

I know this isn’t a new idea, but why is it that men get all the pockets?

I was looking at M&S “Family” Christmas Pyjamas (where they do them in the same festive print for men, women and children). I only want them for myself though - not a cheesy matching family photo!

The men’s ones have nice pockets in the trousers, but the women’s… nope!! Why can’t we have useful clothes as well? They’re literally the same but they added in pockets just for men!

AIBU to think women could have pockets too?

(And AIBU to also be slightly glad that as I am so fat I can fit in the men’s ones and have the men’s pocket anyway?!)

I’m guessing women design the women’s clothes - as a man I can assure you there’s no plot to steal all the world’s pockets. 😆

It annoys my DW too.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 03/11/2023 18:17

It’s because men were scared that we’d carry spells in them.

And women didn’t used to carry money/property because we weren’t allowed any.

Also, the handbag industry would die.

Honestly one of the best things about sewing your own clothes is you can put pockets on everything.

Don't forget to sew up the fly!

Goodornot · 03/11/2023 18:18

I'm sick of pockets on everything including dresses. They just make your hips look bigger and the dress less streamlined.

windypumpkin · 03/11/2023 18:19

I know right if anything women are more likely to want a pocket in pjs for sanitary towels and tampons

I don't need to be streamlined I'm not a dolphin or an Olympic cyclist.

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 03/11/2023 18:20

@Goodornot where are finding dresses with pockets? I need one

Pockets are truly ugly.

WhateverMate · 03/11/2023 18:21

All mine have pockets 🤷‍♂️

Edited to say I'm talking about pyjamas.

Lumpyandlimpy · 03/11/2023 18:22

Not a fan of pockets on dresses, they often look bulky.

Moreempatheticmyarse · 03/11/2023 18:23

Dangerous Coats

Someone clever once said
Women were not allowed pockets
In case they carried leaflets
To spread sedition
Which means unrest
To you & me
A grandiose word
For commonsense
Fairness
Kindness
Equality
So ladies, start sewing
Dangerous coats
Made of pockets & sedition

I don't want to look any wider than I already am. So I don't want bunches of fabric sitting on my bloody hips for pockets that are barely used on a dress.

Brefugee · 03/11/2023 18:23

I'm always torn on this. Because pockets in jeans and casual wear is handy. But as a sewist and someone interested in fashion and clothes - people put things in pockets and absolutely ruin the line of the garment.

But for, say, a dress with a full skirt? gimme pockets. Every time. (I put pockets into dresses and skirts that don't have them)

Boomboomboomboom · 03/11/2023 18:24

My daughter tried on prom dresses last week

Prom dresses with...pockets!

I was surprised but she was happy! Great place to keep your mobile phone!

Ibizabar · 03/11/2023 18:24

I don't really need pockets in my PJs. My jeans, cardigans, coats and dressing gown all have pockets though. I'm not sure I would want pockets in a dress either.

Where do you shop to get so many pockets?

I don't tend to care if my hips look big in PJ's though 🤣

I love a pocket

saltinesandcoffeecups · 03/11/2023 18:25

I’m always astounded that women can’t find pockets. I swear I don’t have secret pocket stashes but I manage to find both pjs and trousers with pockets to buy. PJs I’m not that worried about because I’m generally wearing a sweater or sweatshirt that has them… But yeah I’ve not really found this to be a problem, can’t relate.

Moc25 · 03/11/2023 18:25

If you want pockets on pyjamas, just buy the mens?

you can do the opposite of what i do: take out the pockets and sew up the side seam? patch pockets or jacket/trouser pockets? invisible stitches to sew up the opening (i never cut the stitches in jacket pockets)

Cabeza · 03/11/2023 18:25

Listen to the Articles of Interest podcast on pockets, it's great and fascinating to learn about the history of pockets (lots of other clothing related episodes equally great).

😅
I also wish there were more pockets on women’s clothes, I was wearing a zip up top and tracksuit bottoms the other day and had to bring a bag to carry keys and phone, so annoying!!

Ponoka7 · 03/11/2023 18:27

Most of the time we aren't entitled to sleeves either.

Well, yes - I did that.

But a) this was a very rare case where the men’s thing was the same as the women’s (except for the fucking pockets) and b) women who are smaller would not be able to do buy men’s clothes that fit them - I’m so kind that I want to stick up for all women, not just me!

There are more men designing women's clothes than there are women designing women's clothes

Totally agree. I always try to add pockets if I can
