Why can’t women have pockets?

MarmitePizza · 03/11/2023 18:15

I know this isn’t a new idea, but why is it that men get all the pockets?

I was looking at M&S “Family” Christmas Pyjamas (where they do them in the same festive print for men, women and children). I only want them for myself though - not a cheesy matching family photo!

The men’s ones have nice pockets in the trousers, but the women’s… nope!! Why can’t we have useful clothes as well? They’re literally the same but they added in pockets just for men!

AIBU to think women could have pockets too?

(And AIBU to also be slightly glad that as I am so fat I can fit in the men’s ones and have the men’s pocket anyway?!)

even worse than no pockets - those silly half pockets in dresses that spoil the line of the dress and are too small to actually hold anything. like the one that my phone fell out of and straight into the loo

Perfect pockets for lounging around the house clothes - hoodie or top with a giant pouch at the front.

Great website that shows you which shops have clothes with pockets www.pocketsforwomen.co.uk/

Their weekly email often forces me to but another picketed dress!

Oh thank you - I will have a look at that

I'm with you on this one. Not only do womens cloths often have no pockets, if they do they are often way to small. I used to buy walking trousers so I could have lots of pockets but even these now have less pockets then they used to or smaller one's 🤔.

Women's cloths when they had full skirts and dress used to have pockets and they even had separate pockets under skirts that where almost small bag size.

ladeluge · 03/11/2023 18:45

For casual around the house and walking stuff I use the men's department. All. The. Time.

For instance I was in Primark looking for a padded gilet for knocking about in, and it had two pockets alright, but the type where stuff falls out easily. Nope. Went upstairs to the men's department, found a great padded gilet, it was long so it will cover my arse nicely, it has two pockets at the side WITH ZIPS, and an inside breast pocket. Perfect for what I needed, a lovely dark green colour, and it was £2 cheaper than the women's downstairs. I bought it and it is great.

I also got a men's padded jacket, hip length for out walking. Again, two side zipped pockets, an angled pocket (zipped) on the front near the top outside, AND an inside pocket. I bought it too. It is so warm and the sleeves are the length I need for my simian arms.

I am not mad about pockets in dresses TBH, so I can live without them there. Many ladies PJs have pockets too.

If you want pockets on pyjamas, just buy the mens?

I'm a men's XS. They often start at a S, and lidl start at a M.

Pipistrellus · 03/11/2023 18:53

I wonder if men worry about looking streamlined 😆. I just want the same as the men in my size!

Brefugee · 03/11/2023 18:57

Where i work a lot of the young men wear those modern suits where the trousers are very tight skinny cut, and jackets that don't cover the bum (seriously ugly, especially if the chap isn't really skinny) and they put their big phones in the big man pockets and it is even uglier.

I never know if they buy them too small on purpose (if they have 2 vents in the back you can tell right away if they bought a too-small size because the vents gape. Well, they gape where they have been sensible enough to snip the tacks - but that's a whole other story)

All in all i think people should wear what they want and what they're comfortable in. But i do silently judge when they stuff their pockets and ruin the line of their clothes

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/11/2023 18:58

I don't carry a handbag. Never, because I don't like them. In consequence I often have to buy men's clothes, because I want zip up pockets so my car keys don't fall out (and women's pockets are usually too shallow for the largeish bunch I have to carry around) and an inside breast pocket so I can carry my phone without it falling out or being easy to steal.

I've had to add inside breast pockets to many a garment just so that I've got my phone where I can keep an eye on it, but zip up pockets, particularly in running kit, seems to be alien to women's clothes designers.

LordEmsworth · 03/11/2023 19:04

It's because men prefer women to stay at home. If you don't have pockets, you can't carry essentials like keys, so it's harder to go out, so you stay home. And not rare!

I like to sew dresses with big skirts and I always have extra large pockets, so I don't have to carry a handbag

There are more men designing women's clothes than there are women designing women's clothes

Are there? Thats bonkers but a fun fact - thank you!
I wouldn’t have a clue where to start, but then again I’m not a fashion designer.
But I’d give you pockets if I was 😅

We definitely don’t - but I did wonder why I ended up carrying my wife’s keys an awful lot on evenings out!

MrsPritchardsPantaloons · 03/11/2023 19:14

Arrrgh this annoys me too! I had a pair of Fatface women's "lounge pants" as a Christmas present a few years ago. Thin material, pockets my phone fell out of, and they wore through after one season of wear. My husband got a pair of the men's ones - lovely thick fabric, deep pockets and hard wearing. I now get the men's ones!

I also had a winter jacket from Trespass which was absolutely hopeless. The pockets (of which there were only 2) were so tiny, I could barely fit my whole hand in, let alone have anything else in there at the same time! My dad's Trespass winter jacket, however, had 11 pockets. ELEVEN. And a "pen holder" (?!).

I got a great winter jacket from Peter Storm, which has 6 pockets on the outside, and an inner zip pocket!

Princesspollyyy · 03/11/2023 19:17

The men's pj bottoms probably have pockets because:

A) they were designed by a man
B) men like to fiddle with their privates when their hands are in their pockets

Branleuse · 03/11/2023 19:17

Because big pockets change the way trousers lie/fit and add bulk to the hips. I think it's purely aesthetic.

SwordToFlamethrower · 03/11/2023 19:20

I just bought a Swiss army jacket from an army surplus shop and it has about 10 pockets, all deep and I can put whole books in them.

Best coat I ever bought

SweetFemaleAttitude · 03/11/2023 19:21

Yanbu. It's a feminist issue!

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 03/11/2023 19:23

YANBU. I hate carrying bags and 99% of my trousers, skirts and dresses have useable pockets. If they don’t I won’t buy them.

Sartre · 03/11/2023 19:25

I think it’s linked back to the time when women always carried a handbag. I’ve never carried a handbag personally, I just don’t find them very comfortable or practical so it’s useless for me. I like Lucy&Yak clothes because even the dresses have big pockets.

shardash · 03/11/2023 19:26

The cardigan I'm wearing has them. So do my jeans, and I'm currently rocking no less than six pockets altogether. Is there anything in any of them?

Hang on...... <rummages>........nope.

They are there if I want them though. 😂

The OP mentions pyjamas, not an evening dress. Why would anyone care about a few mm of fabric on their hips when wearing nightwear?

IAmAnIdiot123 · 03/11/2023 19:28

I've always believed it is because men think we have an inbuilt pocket already so don't need them in our clothes 🤣

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/11/2023 19:30

Because then we need to carry bags and our 'D' Ps can load their junk into them too...

Wellhellooooodear · 03/11/2023 19:31

I've read recently a conspiracy theory that it's so women have to buy handbags. It makes sense I guess, those making the clothes also make the bags. Probably bollocks but I'm running with it!
