Why can’t women have pockets?

MarmitePizza · 03/11/2023 18:15

I know this isn’t a new idea, but why is it that men get all the pockets?

I was looking at M&S “Family” Christmas Pyjamas (where they do them in the same festive print for men, women and children). I only want them for myself though - not a cheesy matching family photo!

The men’s ones have nice pockets in the trousers, but the women’s… nope!! Why can’t we have useful clothes as well? They’re literally the same but they added in pockets just for men!

AIBU to think women could have pockets too?

(And AIBU to also be slightly glad that as I am so fat I can fit in the men’s ones and have the men’s pocket anyway?!)

Because they might hide contrivances in them the deceive and bedazzle menfolk.

Knickerbockerglories · 03/11/2023 19:37

You think pockets are an unfair difference? I only discovered a few months ago that M&S men’s trousers have ‘active waist’… literally magic hidden elastic so their trousers are secretly elasticated for subtle flex and comfort…. Without it showing on the outside!!! It’s genius… why do no women’s trousers have this? Is it a secret conspiracy?!! 🤬

Smart style meets comfort and convenience with these trousers. They're made to a comfortable regular fit with a clever active waist that expands up to one whole size. A crease-resistant finish keeps them looking sharp, while our heat-treated Buttonsafe...

I don't live in the UK, but have several dresses and skirts I bought from there - they all have pockets. They aren't shallow pockets either, although I did get a couple of pair of jeans from the UK which had silly tiny pockets. Jeans here have proper pockets, as do the ones I buy from the US.

As for pjs, I see no reason for pockets there!?

TheHoover · 03/11/2023 19:38

I had never understood fashion blogger’s obsession with dresses with pockets:

got this cheeky dress-up/dress down number from Oliver Bonas; lovely ruched jersey - so flattering for hiding mum-tums and will take you from the office to the wine bar. And best of all it has POCKETS!!!

TheFoz · 03/11/2023 19:41

Jolie Moi dresses have pockets.

YANBU

I live in Sweden and here the police have just announced a complete ban on bags at events, whatever the size. I'm going to a concert on Saturday. What the heck am I supposed to do with my phone, keys, glasses, purse, inhaler etc? Coats have to be left in the cloakroom so I'll have to carry it all in my hands. Not easy when you're disabled and use a walking frame.

I don't need to be streamlined I'm not a dolphin or an Olympic cyclist.

🤣🤣🤣

It's because men prefer women to stay at home. If you don't have pockets, you can't carry essentials like keys, so it's harder to go out, so you stay home. And not rare!

www.tortoisemedia.com/audio/episode-5-the-curious-case-of-percy-pig-and-the-missing-pocket/

Isn't that what handbags are for? My ex always used to say he envied women because they could use handbgs to keep items in rather than tryng to stuff them into pockets.

vipersnest1 · 03/11/2023 19:47

OP, you're not wrong.
I'm hardly streamlined these days, but have always been pleased to have decent sized pockets on clothing as they save me having to carry keys / phone in my hands when I don't want to take a bag with me.
The ridiculously slopey or tiny pockets piss me off, though, as they're pretty useless.
(Looks at Zara trousers that have barely any depth to them and have a sloped top. Things fall out of them when you sit down.)

notacooldad · 03/11/2023 19:47

I know right if anything women are more likely to want a pocket in pjs for sanitary towels and tampons
I'm struggling to understand this scenario.
I wearing pj's means you are usually at home or in a place you are comfortable. Why would you want them in your pocket?

I don't want to look any wider than I already am. So I don't want bunches of fabric sitting on my bloody hips for pockets that are barely used on a dress Agreed!
TheGrimSqueakersFlea
@Goodornot where are finding dresses with pockets? I need one

Popsy dresses. Some of them were a bit weird and great if you are a children's TV presenter but they have done nicer ones in the last year or so. Pockets are their selling point.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/11/2023 19:48

Cheating and buying mens isn't a practical option when you're short, a small size and have women's curves.

Bags are annoying.
I often end up wearing a running belt because what pockets I do have aren't designed to securely fit a phone.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 03/11/2023 19:49

I hate bags, but nothing has enough pockets otherwise. I love winter cos I can chuck a hoody or coat on and....pockets! But I run warm, so often don't feel cold enough to need one.

I can get it for the "fashionable" stuff. But even womens walking/hiking trousers have rubbish pockets. They do have pockets, but nothing fits in them!!

TeaGinandFags · 03/11/2023 19:51

MigGirl · 03/11/2023 18:42

I'm with you on this one. Not only do womens cloths often have no pockets, if they do they are often way to small. I used to buy walking trousers so I could have lots of pockets but even these now have less pockets then they used to or smaller one's 🤔.

Women's cloths when they had full skirts and dress used to have pockets and they even had separate pockets under skirts that where almost small bag size.

Victorian women used to put a pocket in their bustles large enough for a bottle of champagne.

Respect, g-g-grandma!

For the non-Victorians among us, pockets can be easily added or extended to the dedired size.

Voteva · 03/11/2023 20:07

It’s driven by purchasing power, which means that there are more women buying clothes who care about making their hips and breasts look as attractive as possible to men, than there are women buying clothes who want pockets. It’s very depressing.

But to be fair Seasalt are quite good at pockets.

M&S is the worst shop I know for sexism in clothing. My son has for years been wearing their “girls” school trousers because the fabric is softer than any in boy’s uniform section, we buy girls coats sometimes too for the soft lining. If you want soft fabric or nice colours it has to be girls section apparently. But if you want decent quality socks it has to be mens section. I’m only shoe size 5 so I buy mens socks and timble dry them until they shrink to my size. Gets a nice thick sock.

Princesspollyyy · 03/11/2023 20:10

For all the people replying about different garments for women with and without pockets, the OP is only talking about PYJAMAS!!!!!

casuarinatree · 03/11/2023 20:16

I like decent pockets in coats and jackets and heavier weight trousers and jeans.

Anything else, especially skirts and dresses, I can't stand pockets in as then my phone, keys, glasses etc (a) pull the garmet out of shape or (b) then the things in my pockets (unless it is a solitary tissue) bang against my legs. So I end up taking a bag with me anyway.

Ibizabar · 03/11/2023 20:18

I actually have a couple of pairs of PJs with pockets. I don't recall ever putting anything in the pockets though.

Pipistrellus · 03/11/2023 20:28

I use pockets in pyjamas when they are actually big enough and functional. I put on pyjamas in the evening once I'm staying in but still want a pocket for a phone, or keys if I go out to the garage or something. Or just somewhere to put my hands.

Devilsmommy · 03/11/2023 20:36

MarmitePizza · 03/11/2023 18:29

Well, yes - I did that.

But a) this was a very rare case where the men’s thing was the same as the women’s (except for the fucking pockets) and b) women who are smaller would not be able to do buy men’s clothes that fit them - I’m so kind that I want to stick up for all women, not just me!

I'm a size 6 and I buy small men's pyjamas and they are the perfect comfy fit. Though haven't got any with pockets though, which I'm only just realising 🤔

Flamingosarentreal · 03/11/2023 20:42

my pyjamas from Morrisons have pockets

inappropriateraspberry · 04/11/2023 09:27

I don't like pockets on dresses, ruin the line and how it hangs. All I'd put in it would be a snotty tissue. I wouldn't want my phone in there in case it falls out, and my purse wouldn't fit. Rather have a bag for all my crap!

notacooldad · 04/11/2023 10:00

The conversation has evolved.🤷‍♀️

Brefugee · 04/11/2023 11:48

it never fails to amaze me that some posters have no understanding of how chat and discussion works.

PP mentioned sleeves. That is due to fast fashion. If you sew you know that a set in sleeve, even a drop seamed sleeve, requires much more time than either a small rolled hem or binding round a sleeve hole. (see also: making proper welted pockets in garments, tailoring in blouses/dresses, adding a zip/fly zip to trousers or skirts)

10HailMarys · 04/11/2023 12:01

Far more women’s clothes have pockets now than they used to.

I only really want useful pockets, to be honest. A lot of pockets are pointless and badly placed and just sit on the hips looking a mess, and are only there because it became trendy a few years ago to demand pockets in everything.

I want pockets in my jeans and dungarees. I want a zip pocket In leggings for my phone and my front door key when I’m running. I like a stylish, well placed pocket in a dress with a suitably full skirt. I don’t really want or need them in my pyjamas though.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/11/2023 12:33

Mens clothes isn't a solution to most women as the proportions are totally wrong. It's not just hip to waste ratio but also upper vs lower body length and shoulder to hip ratio.

While we're talking about pockets does anyone know what the tiny pocket on a lot of t shirts is for. Its totally useless and looks shut.
