Why can’t women have pockets?

I know this isn’t a new idea, but why is it that men get all the pockets?

I was looking at M&S “Family” Christmas Pyjamas (where they do them in the same festive print for men, women and children). I only want them for myself though - not a cheesy matching family photo!

The men’s ones have nice pockets in the trousers, but the women’s… nope!! Why can’t we have useful clothes as well? They’re literally the same but they added in pockets just for men!

AIBU to think women could have pockets too?

(And AIBU to also be slightly glad that as I am so fat I can fit in the men’s ones and have the men’s pocket anyway?!)

Those women who want big pockets can really easily get them. This is such a no issue.

I can't, not unless I buy mens. It is an issue for me. My clothes have pockets but the difference between pocket size for women and men is ridiculous. Can you point me towards affordable women's brands with the same size pockets as the mens?

You can buy men's. If everyone is thinking that we shouldn't have to be concerned if the line or the fit is unflattering, then really why would you be worried that the shape is different.
It's perfectly legal for women to buy men's trousers. They can't stop you.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/11/2023 18:24

But they don't fit because they're the wrong shape, so they're uncomfortable and fall down. Nothing at all to do with what they look like.

The pocket itself couldn't unless your hips were already what you are considering 'massive' It's a few mm of fabric.

Yes my hips are massive and they stretch out the inners of the pockets and look odd.
Also the fabric of pockets bunches up if not filled, and if they're filled, then it's definitely not a few mm of fabric anymore.

Mens are too big in most shops, and boys too short. I just want women's with proper pockets.

Pipistrellus · 05/11/2023 18:27

And, yes, they fall down unless they are a high enough cut to sit above my hips.

Cranberriesandtea · 05/11/2023 18:29

Women don't have possessions only men

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 05/11/2023 18:30

Don't MNers have dressing gowns? I have never in my over 60 years on this earth thought I would like a pocket in my pjs!

As for pockets on clothes, I do love a pocket, mainly to carry a hanky or to put my hands in. I rarely leave the house without a bag of some sort, and wouldn't dream of loading up my pockets with everything I need for a trip outside the house. Not only because material pockets generally aren't that robust, but also because in skirts/dresses it looks odd.

As I already mentioned in a pp, when I was married my DH was always wishing that men could have handbags rather than have to use their pockets for everything (this was many years ago).

KirstenBlest · 05/11/2023 18:32

@Branleuse , men's trousers don't sit properly on a woman's body. Men's pelvises are a different shape, never mind the other differences.

@ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming , but the dressing gowns don't have pockets either.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/11/2023 18:34

Having watched DP load and unload his pockets every time he leaves the house and returns home, I'm glad I just keep everything in my handbag that I just pick up and put down in one go rather than go through that rigmarole with wallet, phone, keys, inhaler, tissues, bag for life etc etc.

But it's interesting to see so many men carrying handbags now. I hope their female partners give them loads of their crap to put in them.

KirstenBlest · 05/11/2023 18:36

@BarbaraofSeville , one of my pet hates is having things shoved into my bag when out somewhere for the day. All the more reason to not have a bag.

Pipistrellus · 05/11/2023 18:38

wallet, phone, keys, inhaler, tissues, bag for life etc etc.
I just have my phone (in a slightly bulky wallet case that holds a couple of cards and notes) and keys. I only take my rucksack for day trips or top up shops. It would be different if I needed to carry more day to day.

StoneTheCrone · 05/11/2023 18:40

As an inverted triangle shape, I have to say that pockets are a blessing; I can keep things in them, warm my hands AND they give me hips.

Seriously though, its to do with cost. Its why we get shit polyester and the men get brushed cotton.

StoneTheCrone · 05/11/2023 18:40

Should've added, like day clothes. Men get proper fabric, women get recycled plastic.

Edited

Big pockets don't sit properly on a womans body either.

Or maybe we all have different shapes, hip size, heights etc.
I have several female friends who only ever buy men's jeans because they fit them better.

spookehtooth · 05/11/2023 18:50

Vote with your wallet, buy the "men" ones with pockets. An awful lot of pyjamas are not really gendered, they're quite baggy, created for comfort. The arms of the men tops tend to be longer.

I have a different "problem". I find so much of the "men" pyjamas a bit dull looking by comparison. Blue, Gray, plain, I'm falling asleep already. I'm sure if I hunt around I can find special/different stuff, and probably pay for the privilege in some way, but life is short and its annoying when I just want to wear something pleasing to my eyes

Pipistrellus · 05/11/2023 18:53

For those looking, the community clothing jeans have good pockets. Not as deep as mens on the thigh but you can put your hands in them and the back pockets will hold a whole phone. I got mine from vinted so they could have changed since though. They don't have the metal bits so are technically denim trousers not jeans, and are a summerweight so I'm hoping to find something else going into winter.

Pipistrellus · 05/11/2023 18:55

@spookehtooth Check John Lewis. I got some Christmas ones in the sale last year, green with trees and winter animals on them which are quite nice.

It's shit isn't it? Buy mens or get plastic rubbish.

*seamstress

I wouldn't describe myself with my hobby of home sewing as a seamstress. That's a job title.

@KirstenBlest I think many people, especially Americans for some reason, use/prefer "sewist" over "sewer", I suppose to avoid the association with the unpleasant homonym.

KirstenBlest · 05/11/2023 19:45

@MrsPritchardsPantaloons , I get that but it makes me think of someone making clothes with the simple free patterns from a sewing magazine, not a proficient dressmaker, and the -ist suffix seems clumsy. I knit but I'm not a knitist.

a free pattern would not be simple for me, but the ones I've seen don't seem great

Brefugee · 05/11/2023 20:41

Branleuse · 05/11/2023 15:38

It's about the individual isn't it. I have about 10in difference between waist and hip measurements. If I have filled pockets, then it's exaggerated which is something I don't want. I don't like it and it makes me feel conscious of it. I also hate the heavy feeling of things in my pockets.
If I wanted big pockets then I'd buy men's cargo pants like DH does.
There are also women's clothes you can get which have pockets.
Those women who want big pockets can really easily get them. This is such a non issue. Everyone goes on about pockets, but reality is, this isn't what gets bought

that's not true though. Women's jeans have front pockets that you can't fit a phone in completely. Men's pockets will easily take a regular sized phone.

The idea that there are loads of nice women's clothes out there with lovely big useful pockets is, frankly, laughable.

I hadn't realised the thing with women's jeans because i wore Levi 501s for years. Lovely massive pockets in those.

*seamstress

don't be daft. I'm not a seamstress which requires several years of training.

I'm a sewist.

no need to "correct" me. Especially when you're wrong.

Where? Where can I easily get women's trousers with pockets that fit a smartphone?

Men’s dresses with pockets are in short supply, so that solution doesn’t work for me

MumYourBabyGrewUpToBeACowboy · 05/11/2023 21:02

I don’t like how full pockets ruin the line of clothing so I rarely use mine for anything more than a tissue. I also prefer carrying a bag rather than having stuff all over me. Personal preference. I don’t feel it’s a feminist issue.
