People who 'quote' the OPs first post on a thread

Why? Please please stop. Thank you.

OP posts:
DaisyMaisyFaisy · 03/11/2023 14:36

I agree! I silently groan when I see it!!!

WhatNoRaisins · 03/11/2023 14:37

I know on some forums this is done in case the OP flounces and deletes their post if the thread doesn't go how they want it.

Obviously that's not how it works here but it's probably a habit for some.

So annoying isn’t it!

PlimplePlop · 03/11/2023 14:37

It's particularly annoying when it's literally the first person to respond, and it's a massive first post.

OP posts:
OhComeOnFFS · 03/11/2023 14:38

Especially when the OP writes reams of info and then the first person to answer quotes it and gives a one line answer.

Scalottia · 03/11/2023 14:39

Agree, it's really annoying. Why do people do this?

RoseBucket · 03/11/2023 14:42

I sometimes do if the OP is long, I’m Dyslexic and it helps me to re read the post whilst typing, is that ok with you all?

If it isn’t, do I care? No.

BarryK3nt · 03/11/2023 14:44

I also internally groan, no need for it.

fuzzleberry · 03/11/2023 14:45

I literally just did this on a thread because my 'reply' button was missing ( don't know why, I can obviously use it for this thread )

I just can’t imagine a life where something this minor annoys me 🤷‍♀️

that would makes sense, thanks for that, it never crossed my mind!

You could just remove the quote when you finish your own post

stripybluesocks · 03/11/2023 14:52

so people can see what post you are replying to? Why is it an issue?

Oh wow! First I've heard it's an irritation to some. It wouldn't have occurred to me. Why do I do it? I own that I do it - so that it's clear as to who/what it is I am responding. 😎I'm new to mumsnet and still trying to work out how to do just a partial quote.

I think I’m about the third or fourth person to do it on your thread OP.Grin

MNHQ should disable the quote option on the first post maybe? I dunno though, they’re too busy adding new updates to thread topic views etc at the moment I think.

Scalottia · 03/11/2023 14:58

But...isn't it obvious?

it would automatically delete in the quote anyway

AtrociousCircumstance · 03/11/2023 15:21

I wonder if MNHQ would consider making it impossible to do this? It is just an annoyance and adds nothing. And it seems to be happening more recently.

AtrociousCircumstance · 03/11/2023 15:21

Just with the very first post, I mean.

Why does it annoy you?

Nuca · 03/11/2023 15:29

No issue with people who do it when there have already been other responses as it makes it clear who they are replying to. But it's bloody annoying when they are the first one to reply and still quote the op's post. Who else would you be replying to when there's no other posts!?

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 03/11/2023 15:32

It is slightly annoying I agree. Nothing to get worked up about, but a bit grating.

The dyslexia point (about which I am personally very attuned to) does not really make sense as surely you can just delete the quote before posting.

It reads very “off” to have a hugely long post quoted with a very short response. Quite an anticlimax. And maybe looks a bit, well, silly, for want of a better way of putting it. Like someone is just posting for the sake of it and has nothing new to offer. But we all do that sometimes I’m sure. I expect this post of mine is an example of that!

Verv · 03/11/2023 15:33

It's done on other forums if the OP is being away with the fairies so that the post in its original form is quoted before the sneaky editing starts when the thread doesnt go in the direction that the OP thought it should.

MN has an edit button now.

Thats the only reason for it that I can think of.

WhatWindyWeather · 03/11/2023 15:35

What annoys me is that I would sometimes like to be able to quote just a few lines of a very long post, but it seems to be all or nothing (unless I'm missing something obvious).
