Why? Please please stop. Thank you.

And yes it's frigging annoying when anyone quotes the OP (original poster/opening post). Especially when it's massive!

And yes they are often one line answers underneath - weirdos Grin

Often pointlessly so: people who quote the OP are often clicking directly on the OP without RTFT

It’s just cyber litter and a wastes scrolling time .

Why? As an adult I make my own decisions. If I wish to I will and now I know it annoys so many people I’ll do it with more gusto.

Do you conduct all your RL conversations with the same courtesy and consideration for others in the conversation?

Summermeadowflowers · 03/11/2023 17:22

I don’t know what’s more annoying, posters who do this or posters who think it’s the height of wit and cleverness to quote the OP on threads about the OP being quoted. It makes the thread quite hard to follow.

That's good to know. I was previously sympathetic to your need to use this functionality and your first post made me feel a bit guilty about petitioning MN to disable it. But now I feel much happier about asking them to take it away asap.

I do hope so because the foot stomp would look quite amusing 🤣

Doesn't bother me in the slightest and surprised it bothers as many as it seems to.

What, you mean like this?

Personally I find it more irritating that people think they make the rules that everyone else must abide by.

DuesToTheDirt · 03/11/2023 17:27

Yeah, it's hugely annoying. Especially when the OPs opening post is 6 paragraphs long, then the first replay quotes 6 paragraphs just to say, "I agree."

Actually I hate any really long quotes. I wish we could edit quotes, although I realise that means that parts could be taken out of context. At present, you get the choice of quoting fully, or using the @ sign to reference a poster (often with no quote, so no one else knows what you're talking about unless the relevant post is just above), or the @ sign with a bolded selection of copied text, which is a faff.

mathanxiety · 03/11/2023 17:28

I do it sometimes when I use the app because once I'm in the reply box I can't see any posts on the thread, including the OP, without losing everything I've typed. Sometimes I like to refer to specific things the OP has posted in a response. I can't always remember every single detail.

Another peculiarity of the app on my phone is that I can't edit my posts or send or receive PMs.

mathanxiety · 03/11/2023 17:29

GunboatDiplomacy · 03/11/2023 15:45

"I sometimes do if the OP is long, I’m Dyslexic and it helps me to re read the post whilst typing, is that ok with you all? "

In that case quote the OP's post, write your post and then hit the big button marked Clear Quote when you've finished.

Takes one second - you get what you need and you don't piss everyone else off.

There's a 'clear quote' button?

Not on my phone there isn't.

Shutthedoormargaret · 03/11/2023 17:30

Agreed. As if we don't know what we're replying to already.... although sometimes I do wonder if people have read the OP at all, so at least we can assume that these posters have at least some idea what's going on (or can we?)

Probably not on the app tbf, nothing useful is ever on the app.

What annoys me is that I would sometimes like to be able to quote just a few lines of a very long post, but it seems to be all or nothing (unless I'm missing something obvious).

Just highlight and copy whatever you want to quote.

SweetBirdsong · 03/11/2023 17:51

No-one needs to quote the original post at all. I agree with you @PlimplePlop

Stop moaning. Thanks.

SoupDragon · 03/11/2023 17:58

People who whinge about people quoting the OP, just stop. It's so bloody annoying and boring. It's been done to death.

TheShellBeach · 03/11/2023 17:59

I wish OPs would quote whoever they're replying to.
That really annoys me.
Their responses end up being completely out of sequence.

If they're not going to quote, they could at least tag people.

EveSix · 03/11/2023 18:03

In the old days, before the quote or @ functions, people used to make the effort to quote properly, putting the poster's name in bold.
The only way to know if a subsequent poster was referencing your earlier post was to keep engaging with the thread and check new posts.
I liked it.

PlimplePlop · 03/11/2023 14:37

It's particularly annoying when it's literally the first person to respond, and it's a massive first post.

You must lead a very boring life if it’s such an issue for you. Just scroll past if you don’t like it …. Simple

If it isn’t, do I care? No.

But you could delete it when you've finished, couldn't you?

Passepartoute · 03/11/2023 18:44

stripybluesocks · 03/11/2023 14:52

so people can see what post you are replying to? Why is it an issue?

If you're on a thread, the assumption is that you are replying to OP. You don't need to tell people so.

Passepartoute · 03/11/2023 18:47

Verv · 03/11/2023 15:33

It's done on other forums if the OP is being away with the fairies so that the post in its original form is quoted before the sneaky editing starts when the thread doesnt go in the direction that the OP thought it should.

MN has an edit button now.

Thats the only reason for it that I can think of.

You can only edit a post for a few minutes after you've posted it. So an OP who regrets what they've posted when they see the replies won't be able to edit.

You can copy and paste? People usually put the quotation into bold font to show it's a quote.
