People who 'quote' the OPs first post on a thread

Why? Please please stop. Thank you.

OP posts:
SkaneTos · 03/11/2023 15:37

I think @WhatNoRaisins is right about why people do this.

CornishGem1975 · 03/11/2023 15:37

I mean, the functionality is there for a reason.

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 03/11/2023 15:39

stripybluesocks · 03/11/2023 14:52

so people can see what post you are replying to? Why is it an issue?

But you're replying to the OP! It should be obvious!

Not sure what the issue is OP...

I mean, the functionality is there for a reason.

It's there so other posts in the thread can be quoted.

GunboatDiplomacy · 03/11/2023 15:45

"I sometimes do if the OP is long, I’m Dyslexic and it helps me to re read the post whilst typing, is that ok with you all? "

In that case quote the OP's post, write your post and then hit the big button marked Clear Quote when you've finished.

Takes one second - you get what you need and you don't piss everyone else off.

AtrociousCircumstance · 03/11/2023 15:21

I wonder if MNHQ would consider making it impossible to do this? It is just an annoyance and adds nothing. And it seems to be happening more recently.

They could presumably do this quite easily - and then anyone who's doing it just so they can have the OP in front of them for reference as they reply would no longer be able to do it.

So if you are using the quote function (understandably enough) for this purpose, I strongly suggest you get into the habit of hitting the Clear Quote button before you post, because if people keep getting annoyed by this then eventually MN may remove the ability to quote OPs.

Oh wow! First I've heard it's an irritation to some. It wouldn't have occurred to me. Why do I do it? I own that I do it - so that it's clear as to who/what it is I am responding. 😎I'm new to mumsnet and still trying to work out how to do just a partial quote.

Just for the sake of clarity - quoting other posts, or even subsequent posts by the Original Poster herself isn't a problem, it's only quoting the Original Post itself which grates, especially if it's really long. The default assumption is always that you are replying to that original post unless you state otherwise, which is why you don't need to quote it. Sometimes if you're replying to a specific point in a long OP it might be appropriate to snip out that bit and put it in quotes / bold in your own post though.

So annoying isn’t it!

was going to.do this but can't now so will quote you instead

AtrociousCircumstance · 03/11/2023 16:00

@GunboatDiplomacy Maybe they could make an auto delete of any replication of the first post - so people could copy it for their reference, but it wouldn’t get posted.

Please no. It is very useful to know that someone is replying only to the first post later in thread.
I sometimes feel it would be very practical if all subsequent posts contained info what was the last OP's post seem by the poster.

And I hate when people tag previous posters by names instead of quoting them. 99% of context is lost that way and it kills any discussion (the not-quoted post can be on different page).

Good forum systems have active reply button - it puts there a reference to another post. The current reply here is useless.

No.
(Sorry, couldn't resist).

fetchacloth · 03/11/2023 16:19

I agree there's really no need.

MyGrannysBucket · 03/11/2023 16:25

It annoys me too, especially if it's a really long post. Even more so when posters continue to repost the entire post.
There was a thread recently where a poster replied to a post with a post that took up half of the page and several others quoted the entire post, one of the pages was nothing but that pissing post being quoted!
Why not just use the @ followed by the posters name, rather than quoting the entire post.

pictoosh · 03/11/2023 16:36

Ahh god it's so annoying. There is no need for it. It just means you have to scroll past the same long post multiple times. We know you're replying to the OP. Please stop doing it.

pictoosh · 03/11/2023 16:44

Or if you must establish that you are replying to the OP, simply begin your post with 'OP'.
Saves the repetition.

If it isn’t, do I care? No.

Type… then click Clear Quote 🙂

No.

stripybluesocks · 03/11/2023 14:52

so people can see what post you are replying to? Why is it an issue?

Because it's the Opening Post and everyone (presumably) has already read it to respond! We don't need it again!

AirFryerFrequentFlyer · 03/11/2023 17:01

And yes it's frigging annoying when anyone quotes the OP (original poster/opening post). Especially when it's massive!

And yes they are often one line answers underneath - weirdos Grin

DiddyHeck · 03/11/2023 17:03

It is annoying, I agree.

Ditto when someone keeps posting long, laborious, self indulged posts mid thread (that most people skip) and some knob comes along and quotes them! 🤦‍♀️

Yep, properly does my nut in

BrimfulOfMash · 03/11/2023 16:48

Type… then click Clear Quote 🙂

Why? As an adult I make my own decisions. If I wish to I will and now I know it annoys so many people I’ll do it with more gusto.
