That MIL has bought DS an expensive Thomas the tank Train set after I told her we didn't want it?

She has wanted to buy him one for a while. I told her we would prefer Brio, or even a cheaper one that isn't branded.
This morning I got a delivery of a full train set and various trains and accesories.
He is delighted of course, and loves it but I am angry she has spent too much money and gone against our expressed wishes.

Am I just ungrateful?

Madonna -that is something I'm learning . . . .pick your battles wisely

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 10/03/2008 17:09

I don't know if you saw my post but have you asked her why she sent something you had said you didn't want?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 10/03/2008 17:13

NAB it came this morning and she will be at work now so I will call her tonight.

She had said she sent a toy to us but I assumed it was a like a bike, which we had been talking about and she said she would get.

TBH TDWP, I can see your point. It is nice to be able to choose big items for yourself. They take up space so you obviously want the right one. BUT Take Along isn't that big, is it? Or has she bought some huge layout that I didn't know existed?

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 10/03/2008 17:14

She may have thought you couldn't afford it or some other genuine reason. Give her the benefit of the doubt and if it turns out she did it for anything other than trying to be nice, then tell her off!

I am intrigued by the product - does anyone have a link?

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 10/03/2008 17:17

Have just skimmed the thread but TDWP I can completely see why you would be upset. My MIL does the same thing all the fecking time.
YOu mention something in passing that you were thinking about getting for DC and she goes out and buys it. only the most expensive over the top one she can find.
Drives me up the flipping wall.
then you say something and you are being ungrateful. it's not about being ungrateful it's about being allowed to treat your own children without someone else stealig your thunder. (can you tell i've been thinking about starting a similar thread?!)
YAsooooNBU. prefectly within your rights to be annoyed. Just because someone does 'nice' things doens't mean you can over look rudeness. regardless of what anyone else says (how many times have i heard the "well, at least your MIL takes an interest in your kids" bullshit)

A very large item to buy without asking imo.

megglevache - I think the if the issue had been sweets and TDWP had said 'my MIL bought DS1 a Mars bar when we expressly wished for a Tesco own brand caramel bar' the reaction would have been the same.

The OP doesn't mind that her ds was given a trainset, just that it was Thomas branded rather than Brio or ELC. Which is a bit unreasonable.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 10/03/2008 17:27

mmj you are usually great in your posts but that was again a little out of order.
Did you look at the link? This is a large item and branded toys that will be fun, but which will make me cringe whenever I see them.

Perhaps I am a bit of a toy fascist.

YANBU, MIL should not have gone against your wishes. You are being a terrible snob though, at least it is only Thomas the Tank Engine, wait until he starts school and starts hankering after Power Rangers then you will be missing the innocent days of old Thomas & Friends.

meemar · 10/03/2008 17:29

will you seriously cringe when you look at it?

Despite how much you ds enjoys playing with it? It's a toy - they are supposed to be colourful!

YABU - if you don't want it, i'll have it for DD, she adores Thomas. I do cringe at themed toys, but have a soft spot for thomas in this house, DD1 loved thomas, she is 17 now.

I do understand where you are coming from, but i bet DS loves the toy. If the accesories are expensive and i know they are hideously overpriced, let MIL buy them.Im sure you can come up with a list Of course, you could have got lucky with me, and bought a complete thomas train set from the second hand shop, complete wth about 20 trains for £1!!!

MIL can't win can they - well i guess that is because they are generally a pain in the arse and make even gift giving political!
