To be sad that no one would help

Emergency last night and I needed someone to drive a forty minute round trip. That's all. Never asked for this or any favour really before. I offered to pay. No one would help. Not my mum, siblings. One friend would have but she's on holiday. Got a taxi in the end but it was sheer luck one turned up as it's not a well covered part of the country.

Feel really alone right now!

So about a 3.5 hour walk but probably not actually walkable due to no pavements for some of it.

Woman2023 · 03/11/2023 07:24

40 min round trip is only 20 mins each way. Of course most families would offer a lift back from a train station if taxis weren't easily available.

Was it you who was stranded?

PetsAreBetter · 03/11/2023 07:24

Don't your train services put on buses if the trains have to stop?

Startagainjanuary · 03/11/2023 07:24

How old is the person you were rescuing from the station?

Can you drive?

Do you have a car?

Dowhadiddydiddydum · 03/11/2023 07:25

Well op if they literally just didn’t help because they didn’t want to then you know where you stand and you know what response to give when they need help.

My husband once got stranded at a train station 20 mins drive away. People say walk….we’ll he actually did but it was a stupid decision because it was a walk along country roads at night between 2 small towns. He’s lucky he didn’t get hit by a car. 40 minutes doesn’t sound like it would be a long walk but it does depend on location. If one side of a city to another then it’s doable, if across rural country lanes with no path and no lighting it is a different matter.

curtaintwitchersannonymous · 03/11/2023 07:27

Your whole scenario makes no sense - the train company is responsible for the onward journey in these circumstances, and would not have left a passenger stranded or alone

DappledThings · 03/11/2023 07:27

It's a bit unclear. Were you the one stranded or you wanted someone to go and pick up someone else whom was stranded? If the latter could you not drive?

Are both the station and your home miles from anywhere and from each other?

EllaPaella · 03/11/2023 07:22

I would have come to get you OP. I would have done the same for any friend or relative providing that I was able to drive.

Same here. These threads always amuse me with all of the "Well I'd just have walked barefoot for 6 hours through a hurricane. What a fuss over nothing" posts. I've helped out mere acquaintances in similar circumstances, let alone family or friends.

Parpadew · 03/11/2023 07:28

@PetsAreBetter all train companies have to try but usually in a mass breakdown event there are none available.

Parpadew · 03/11/2023 07:09

Context is rescuing someone from being stuck overnight at a train station after the breakdown yesterday. Small village so no public transport or hotels.

Why couldn't they get a taxi?

curtaintwitchersannonymous · 03/11/2023 07:28

also, people cant just jump into their cars and drive at night without warning, they might have had a drink, they might not be confident night drivers, they might be worried about the weather

Syndulla · 03/11/2023 07:28

Spot the Londoners in this thread 🙄

In my area you have to book a taxi at least a week in advance.

I would have come to get you OP even if I only vaguely knew you. I'm sorry you were put in that position.

Parpadew · 03/11/2023 07:28

The "scenario makes no sense" thing shows how often you get the train!

Parpadew · 03/11/2023 07:15

As above, no taxis. You'd let your partner sleep on a train (or platform if the staff leave) without asking for help? Ok ...

The weather was ok where the issue arose (no warning).

But you got a taxi?

Parpadew · 03/11/2023 07:29

Thanks @Syndulla I appreciate that!
Kind people are bloody rare (and apparently even rarer in my blood line...)

@PetsAreBetter all train companies have to try but usually in a mass breakdown event there are none available.

Well, if there were no buses provided, no taxis available for hours and no ride share services available, then yes, I'd help you rescue them. No hesitation unless I had some other personal issue that prevented me.

If there was a taxi or other option then I would think it was unreasonable to ask for help with this at night.

The train company has access to coaches

Parpadew · 03/11/2023 07:30

I will just conclude by saying this has permanently damaged my relationship with my sister in particular. I don't know if she will realise it but... If you care about your family don't abandon them when they ask for your help (especially if they absolutely never usually ask).

That's odd why wouldn't they just get the taxi themselves lol I wouldn't help an adult like this either I assumed you meant it was an emergency like driving to hospital or something

You would let a family member sleep outside in November for the sake of 45 minutes? You sound lovely.

Yes, 20 mins each way by car. Much longer if you have to walk.

MackrelSky · 03/11/2023 07:31

Mumtime2 · 03/11/2023 07:20

It was 40mins from your home in a quiet place?
I would have walked.
Who knows why others didn't help, have you asked?

Hmm, you would walk a journey that takes 40 minutes by car?!

Bellyblueboy · 03/11/2023 07:31

I would have helped my sister or parents.

who were you asking them to rescue - your story is a little vague.

was it you who was stuck at the train station? If you were asking them to rescue someone else that’s a different ask. Was is someone they know?

PixiKitKat · 03/11/2023 07:32

I live in a town, not a village, and getting a taxi is ridiculously difficult!

Also people saying it's a 40min walk?? If it's a 20 min drive down country roads one way, it definitely isn't going to be a 40 min walk and even if it was, you'd have to be stupid to do that in the dark.

I'd help a friend in this situation, as I know how shitty public transport is in rural areas and how difficult it is to get home sometimes.

Shoxfordian · 03/11/2023 07:32

I would have helped someone I cared about- you can draw your own conclusions

legosunqueen · 03/11/2023 07:33

@curtaintwitchersannonymous is is extremely rare for train companies to put on replacement buses but even if they do, they are only station to station...
