to pronounce the name ‘Ciarán’?

I’ve heard ‘KEER-on’ all day on Radio 4, and just now ‘’Keer-ON’. (It’s the Irish spelling of ‘Kieren’ and pronounced as such).

Don’t the BBC have people to teach them how to pronounce names? I can think of a couple of famous Ciaráns. It’s not THAT unusual a name!!

It was pronounced fine when I heard it - it’s a very popular name in the UK so not likely it wouldn’t be.

Could this be a DM style bash the BBC thread OP? 🤔

Ifailed · 02/11/2023 21:11

You can pronounce Kieren either way, so what's the problem?

CowboyJoanna · 02/11/2023 21:12

Everytime Ive heard Ciaran pronounced it is as "KEER on".

That is how you pronounce it.

BitofaStramash · 02/11/2023 21:12

You know people have different accents. 😳

soundsys · 02/11/2023 21:13

Ha I was just saying this to DH as it's been driving me mad all day! EVERYONE on Radio 4 was saying it weirdly as if it was maybe Spanish rather than Irish!

They do have a pronunciation unit and the fact they were all doing it made me think someone there got it wrong, but surely someone would know how to pronounce it and query it?!

Lochness1975 · 02/11/2023 21:13

I thought the Irish way was pronounced slightly different to the English way?

Thedrownedprophet · 02/11/2023 21:13

It's pronounced KEER-awn here in Ireland

Mummy2Sienna · 02/11/2023 21:13

No! I love the BBC! I have honestly heard this all day today and I have been very surprised - I’ve been listening to R4 all day and it’s been numerous newsreaders. I know they normally make the effort to pronounce names properly so don’t understand why they’re getting it wrong!

Lesina · 02/11/2023 21:15

It’s not the Irish spelling of Kieran, Kieran is the anglicisation of Ciarán a very traditional Irish name. It’s pronounced Keer -awn.

Mummy2Sienna · 02/11/2023 21:15

I have Irish family members called ciarán and they pronounce it Keer-un. Never heard keer-ON

Ciaran is pronounced… Keyr-ron

Kieran is pronounced differently…. Key-rin.

You know what I mean though. I am Irish.

Am I missing something?? That’s how it’s pronounced.
I’m Irish.

Janedoe82 · 02/11/2023 21:17

I live in Belfast. It’s pronounced ‘keer an’ here. Not ‘on’ usually but have heard it that way too. Maybe more British.

PinkLemons99 · 02/11/2023 21:17

Down in Cork we pronounce it more like Care-awn. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thedrownedprophet · 02/11/2023 21:18

The fada over the second "a" gives it the AWN sound rather than an UN sound

Belfast bastardises lots of Irish names though. Keer-an is probably more common, it’s only Gaelic speakers I know who use Keer-on in Belfast. But similar with names like Caoimhe which is always mispronounced in Belfast.

Sturmundcalm · 02/11/2023 21:21

I heard one of the R1 news folks pronounce it really weirdly - as someone else said almost like it was a spanish name or something. def more vowels than there should be in any attempt to say it!

Which is most similar to ‘on‘ in an English accent.

Edited

No, I heard it getting mangled on the BBC too - I think it was the fada that confused them.

Theoriginalmrscillianmurphy · 02/11/2023 21:25

I have an Irish name and growing up in the UK was painful.

I've only ever heard it as kee Ron.

No. The fada gives it the long awn sound at the end. They are saying Kieran not Ciarán.

Yes the Irish pronounce it correctly :)

GreyTS · 02/11/2023 21:29

I've heard several different pronunciations of the name here in ireland - fine one might be historically and linguistically correct but it does seem to depend on where you live/accent

Nomnomnom66 · 02/11/2023 21:30

Why is the pronunciation of Irish names even a debate? Its Keerawn phonetically. That's the way to pronounce it. Any other way of pronouncing it is wrong.
