To be astonished that Morrisons cafe cannot make scrambled egg

Fancied a quick brunch with DH this morning so headed to Morrisons cafe after we finished our shopping. Asked for scrambled egg with my breakfast but was told they only had fried or poached!

Upon querying this with a manager I was told the scrambled egg comes pre prepared and gets microwaved in a bag.

I don’t expect Michelin starred food at a supermarket cafe but Aibu to expect them to be able to make fresh scrambled egg?

🤢 that sounds gross!

EmmaEmerald · 01/11/2023 20:23

I’m going to say YABU but a lot of people don’t realise how catering works in a reasonably priced place. A lot of chain places are microwaving pre prepared meals

Thesearmsofmine · 01/11/2023 20:25

YABU, they aren’t doing much actual cooking in these places.

Sauvblanctime · 01/11/2023 20:25

They don’t have actual chefs. Just people who microwave stuff

angelikacpickles · 01/11/2023 20:25

It wasn't that they weren't able to make it though was it? If they normally make it in a microwave bag, then presumably they don't have a set-up in terms of utensils and procedures for making it from fresh eggs.

YABU to expect a supermarket cafe to change their procedures for you.

mouse70 · 01/11/2023 20:26

There IS an art to making scrambled eggs.

hellohellothere · 01/11/2023 20:26

YABU. It's bargain basement cheap food.

User8054245 · 01/11/2023 20:28

The weirdest part of this story is that fried and poached eggs are much harder to make. Who'd expect a freshly poached egg from a supermarket caff?!

FishyTree · 01/11/2023 20:32

@Sauvblanctime

I wouldn’t have thought a chef is required to make scrambled egg.

Yes yabu. It's a supermarket 'cafe' not an actual cafe. They reheat food and serve it, or serve pre packaged food they also sell in the store.
You may wish to visit an actual cafe if you want someone to cook the food fresh for you.

Not really.

Plus I've been unfortunate enough to have eggs poached by Morrisons so it's not like they're bothered about doing them nicely.

This pisses me off. I don't like fried or poached eggs unless they're cooked how I like them, ie yolk fully runny.

And I much prefer scrambled eggs or omelettes anyway, but many places don't sell them 'because they're too hard to make' which is ridiculous. An omelette at least is the easiest thing in the world to make and takes about 2 minutes, so probably the fastest of all egg items.

cocksstrideintheevening · 01/11/2023 20:37

It's a Morrisons cafe, what did you expect?

I worked in McDonalds when I was at uni way back when and the scrambled egg came out of a carton even then.

It's mass cheap catering, most chain places
Just microwave precooked food.

ThePoshUns · 01/11/2023 20:37

Im being thick, are you saying fried / poached eggs are ready made and heated up?!

The poached definitely come pre- cooked and are just reheated.

Not sure about fried. I think Weatherspoons, for example, fry their eggs fresh but get the rest of their eggs (and most most else) pre-done. Maybe Morrisons fry theirs fresh too? But probably not.

@Sauvblanctime

I wouldn’t have thought a chef is required to make scrambled egg.

But the point is, they order in poached eggs, fried eggs, scrambled eggs. On this occasion they were out of scrambled eggs. They aren’t cooking the eggs themselves. I’m 99% sure of this.

Inyourwildestdreams · 01/11/2023 20:40

Can’t comment on the fried eggs but the poached definitely precooked in big vacuum bags 😅

gingercat02 · 01/11/2023 20:40

Hospital scrambled egg is bought in precooked and reheated. Was originally due to salmonella as they were pasteurised but is just easier now

peppermintcrisp · 01/11/2023 20:40

I hardly ever eat out now.

The poached eggs are bought in !

TomatoSandwiches · 01/11/2023 20:41

It would mess up their stock take to use 2 eggs assigned for fried variety to make scrambled egg if they have run out of scrambled egg mix.
This isn't a " Cafe " in the traditional sense so YABU.

angelikacpickles · 01/11/2023 20:41

But of course the staff know how to make a scrambled egg. They just don't, because that's not how they are set up.

Carnewb · 01/11/2023 20:42

FishyTree · 01/11/2023 20:32

@Sauvblanctime

I wouldn’t have thought a chef is required to make scrambled egg.

You need someone with more training than how to ping a microwave to a set of instructions and a food hygiene certificate. Which costs more money. Which is why the food is cheap to start with.
Cost more to have someone make them by hand and cook them.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 01/11/2023 20:42

I was in Wetherspoons once and a man asked for Eggs Benedict and they said the poached eggs had been ordered but not delivered.
