To be astonished that Morrisons cafe cannot make scrambled egg

Fancied a quick brunch with DH this morning so headed to Morrisons cafe after we finished our shopping. Asked for scrambled egg with my breakfast but was told they only had fried or poached!

Upon querying this with a manager I was told the scrambled egg comes pre prepared and gets microwaved in a bag.

I don’t expect Michelin starred food at a supermarket cafe but Aibu to expect them to be able to make fresh scrambled egg?

Toast is always so floppy too

Coconochanel · 01/11/2023 22:13

I worked in a Morrisons cafe. Scrambled egg came in pre packaged bags we put into bowls then microwaved when ordered. Fried eggs were done fresh. They didn't do poached eggs when I worked there though.

Well knock me sideways

@BarbaraofSeville it's not just about subbing items though, it's also about cross contamination. Premises that reheat packaged food can easily declare meals to be free of specific allergens because different ingredients won't be prepped and cooked on the same surfaces. Eg there's no risk of using a pan to cook a dairy free dish that had previously had milk and eggs in it. Not suggesting things wouldn't be washed, but that's not necessarily enough for those with severe allergies.

My friend used to work at Wetherspoons as a microwave technician 😂

it's mental when you consider all the food waste from supermarkets, yet they don't use up short life stock by making meals in the cafe, or even restocking from the shop when they run out of eggs or whatever.

But they aren't set up to cook

plus they can't take stock that's meant to be sold

it's a business

i'm sorry if it sounds mean but I'm often surprised at how some MNers lack knowledge in these things.

So does that mean the poached and fried eggs also come in a bag?

Yes.

Most supermarkets have the waste stock taken off them by charities these days.

You couldn’t run a cafe where every now and again random items appear in unquantifiable amounts on the menu because the supermarket has some mushrooms or tomatoes on the turn that day.
Supermarket stock is tightly controlled, cafe food is highly controlled.
Stuff gets reduced, staff get some and charity gets what it picks up.

Totaly · 01/11/2023 22:25

Why not, just as a thought, go and support a small family run local cafe that cooks fresh food?

Frostine · 01/11/2023 22:30

In a garden centre cafe / restaurant we were once refused toast because the chef hadn't yet arrived !

SecondUsername4me · 01/11/2023 22:33

This is the thing with a chain (cafes in chain supermarkets, Wetherspoons etc), every site has to serve the same dishes in exactly the same way.

Sending portioned pre prepared scrambled eggs vacuum packaged to all of the 300+ morrisons cafes is the only way to guarantee the portion size, cooking style and quality is exactly the same regardless.

You don't expect Mcdonalds workers to be out the back peeling spuds and chopping their own fries do you?

It seems ridiculous, I know. But they will only be insured for certain people to prepare food. If none of the other staff have their food hygiene certs or whatever else the insurance requires, then no, they cannot prepare food. Even if it is toast.

Bellybootcut · 01/11/2023 22:36

Why did you need to speak to the manager? Did you not believe the person who told you they couldn't do it? Or not accept it? Why would they make it up?

WillowCraft · 01/11/2023 22:37

We live in a very strange place

Gobleki · 01/11/2023 22:40

Someone needs to post a pic of the bill fried eggs in plastic. I have to see them.
iI know it’s a business decision and they have a right to do it but yuck. I will never eat an egg in such a place again. How gross.

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 01/11/2023 21:03

Surely they've got a plastic bowl, microwave and a fork?

Scrambled egg isn't that hard.

But microwaved scrambled egg is awful!!

AnxiousAF · 01/11/2023 22:44

Mum once asked for sausage chips and peas in Morrisons. They said it only came as a kids meal (which was available) but she couldn't have that as she wasn't a child. That was a bit weird, but guess they have to follow the menu 😕

Tryingtokeepgoing · 01/11/2023 22:45

TheLoveIsReal · 01/11/2023 21:57

It’s not mental at all Confused

Food establishments make their food with specific ingredients, and they advertise and write their menus based off that.

They can’t just randomly grab different brands of stuff because the ingredients would be wrong. If anyone had an allergic reaction they would be fucked.

Especially now there’s also a requirement to have the calorific value available too…how would a cook (assuming they wanted to pay one…) do that for a random meal thrown together from leftovers?

Mners usually only find out how shop assistants/ supermarkets/ cafe's staff actually work when their 17 yr olds start looking for part time work round uni.

Before that they think these jobs go to idiots who cant make a scrambled egg or staff who wont change their workpractices to suit each customer. They don't realise staff must follow strict guidelines they had no say in setting up.

EmmaEmerald · 01/11/2023 22:56

ssd - yes, but while I don't have kids, I live in...the world?

I don't eat out much but if I want a takeaway I go to the local greasy spoon, and mum likes to go to the family owned, more upmarket local cafe. They're both like little community hubs. We maybe eat out once a month.

A few years ago I was refused a sandwich without margarine at a Morrisons cafe, not because they couldn’t make one but because the label listed margarine in the ingredients and they couldn’t sell me a sandwich without a label. Madness.

Longingforthesummer · 01/11/2023 23:05

Poached eggs the same there....bought in

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 01/11/2023 23:06

It's better than scrambled egg out of a bag.

I personally don't eat eggs any more after the third time of immediate vomiting after eating one, and I don't eat them when I'm out because they are usually nasty but microwave scrambled is better than no scrambled egg.

1vandal2 · 01/11/2023 23:18

Not madness, it's a legal requirement to have a full, correct list of ingredients on all prepackaged food. Natasha's law.
