To be astonished that Morrisons cafe cannot make scrambled egg

Fancied a quick brunch with DH this morning so headed to Morrisons cafe after we finished our shopping. Asked for scrambled egg with my breakfast but was told they only had fried or poached!

Upon querying this with a manager I was told the scrambled egg comes pre prepared and gets microwaved in a bag.

I don’t expect Michelin starred food at a supermarket cafe but Aibu to expect them to be able to make fresh scrambled egg?

@Sauvblanctime

I wouldn’t have thought a chef is required to make scrambled egg.

No, but they don’t have the facilities. They literally told you it’s all bought in

It would mess up their stock take to use 2 eggs assigned for fried variety to make scrambled egg if they have run out of scrambled egg mix.
This isn't a " Cafe " in the traditional sense so YABU.

Oh yes, supermarket cafes. Those places where it's utterly impossible to source basic foodstuffs. Oh, wait.......

I remember the time that, once I'd got them to admit that the stuff in the giant white tub that they were about to put on my crumpets wasn't actually butter, despite the server claiming it was, they claimed that they'd 'run out of butter' despite us being able to see fridges full of the stuff about 10 metres away in the store.

It's nothing to do with the skill level required to scramble an egg, it's the cleanup time and inefficiency of having to keep changing pans as it sticks to the bottom! At McDonald's we cooked all our eggs fresh and had a special procedure to do them all but there would be a member of staff who spent an hour or so on "the dive" (washing up with a high pressure tap) after changeover to the main menu and the most time consuming aspect was to get all the egg off everything, and a lot of places just don't have the equipment or staff for a setup like that.

Im being thick, are you saying fried / poached eggs are ready made and heated up?!

Yes, I was a waiter for years, even in high end places they’re either made in advance on the premises and reheated, or bought ready made and reheated. I worked in a place that charged almost £20 for eggs benedict, the eggs were bought ready cooked and just needed to sit in boiling water for a minute.

ThePoshUns · 01/11/2023 20:47

Well everyday is a school day.

It's not just you. I'm actually flabbergasted 😯

Tatumm · 01/11/2023 20:49

The prices are cheap because the menu is designed around minimal equipment use and minimal skill levels as well as the poorest quality ingredients. Surely that’s obvious if you think about it? You need to be in a proper cafe if you want a proper cooked breakfast.

No, but equipment and tools are. They won’t have them available.

MonumentalLentil · 01/11/2023 20:51

The reason some cafes/restaurants don't allow you to mix & match options is because it is already portion into plastic bags and microwaved when ordered.

I once bought some frozen stuff from a man who was trying to set up a delivery service for frozen meals. It all came portioned up as it was intended for restaurants to freeze and then heat when needed. To be fair it was good quality in this case unlike the stuff in some of the chain restaurants.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 01/11/2023 20:53

Sounds like hospital ‘scrambled’ egg. Comes in powder form and is reconstituted, holding the shape of its container and looking like yellow blancmange. I used to ask patients if they wanted one lump or two. 😂

therealcookiemonster · 01/11/2023 20:53

Good scrambled egg is not that easy. can get mushy eggs in most places and tbh in supermarket cafés it's not unsurprising that they come from a bag. you would have been better off going to a small local café

ploob · 01/11/2023 20:58

Beefeater and the like also use precooked scrambled and poached eggs. It's why the best things to eat on the supper menu are from the grill as they have to be cooked fresh rather than defrosted/warmed up.

This takes me back to the time the cafe in Waitrose where we stopped on our way to somewhere ran out of bread to make sandwiches.
In the middle of an actual supermarket Hmm
After much back and forth they allowed us to buy some pre packed ones from chillers right outside the cafe and allowed us to eat them at the tables.
Ridiculous.

Surely they've got a plastic bowl, microwave and a fork?

Scrambled egg isn't that hard.

The problem will have been with advertising and ingredients.

They make their products with a specific bread (that they might not sell). They are not allowed to just substitute for any other bread - it will have different ingredients. They would be fucked if they did that and someone had an allergic reaction.

Similarly if McDonalds runs out of lettuce/milk/tomatoes etc they can’t just nip to Asda to grab some more.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/11/2023 21:05

MonumentalLentil · 01/11/2023 20:53

Asda have scrambled egg mix. Shame the Happy Egg Company don't really have happy hens.

What purpose does that serve? Genuine question. It needs refrigerating and using within 2 days once open, unlike whole eggs which can be kept at room temperature for weeks.

Anyone who is unable to crack eggs and whisk them is unlikely to be able to open a tetra pak either.

RedSnail · 01/11/2023 21:10

@BarbaraofSeville someone with a visual impairment might struggle with cracking and whisking eggs but be able to open a carton fine.

someone with a fine motor skills coordination problem might be able to have someone loosen a carton lid for them so they can make scrambled egg themselves if they wouldn’t have the coordination skills to crack eggs

Snugglemonkey · 01/11/2023 21:10

I have only even there once. I ordered a poached egg on avocado toast. It was so rubbery it was hard to cut. I complained and got another, but it was the same. I did not eat it and was asked if it was OK. When I said it was the same, the woman said they come prepacked in pouches that are microwaved 🤮

SummerSazz · 01/11/2023 21:10

I used to work at Happy Eater and was always embarrassed to have say we couldn't do the cheese and tomato omelette without tomato.....

We did however make scrambled egg in the microwave

LakeTiticaca · 01/11/2023 21:11

It's a supermarket cafe. They have set menus which they can't deviate from.
You're better off going to an independent cafe if you want something different

Boymum2104 · 01/11/2023 21:11

YABU just order what's available on the menu. The staff can't just start cooking scrambled egg on a frying pan when they are expected to cook it in a certain way. It's a super market cafe so they probably don't even have a frying pan lol

Callipygion · 01/11/2023 21:14

We had a similar thing years ago in a Little Chef! 🤣
No omelettes but you could have a fried egg.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 01/11/2023 21:15

My Dh had similar at a Wetherspoons, he ordered a breakfast and they told him that they had runout of fried eggs but they could offer him a poached egg, all already cooked apparently.
