To be astonished that Morrisons cafe cannot make scrambled egg

Fancied a quick brunch with DH this morning so headed to Morrisons cafe after we finished our shopping. Asked for scrambled egg with my breakfast but was told they only had fried or poached!

Upon querying this with a manager I was told the scrambled egg comes pre prepared and gets microwaved in a bag.

I don’t expect Michelin starred food at a supermarket cafe but Aibu to expect them to be able to make fresh scrambled egg?

My DH usually asks for boiled eggs in hotels with buffet breakfasts, to get them cooked fresh

Oh yes, supermarket cafes. Those places where it's utterly impossible to source basic foodstuffs. Oh, wait.......

I remember the time that, once I'd got them to admit that the stuff in the giant white tub that they were about to put on my crumpets wasn't actually butter, despite the server claiming it was, they claimed that they'd 'run out of butter' despite us being able to see fridges full of the stuff about 10 metres away in the store.

Cafe staff cannot just take stuff from the store though.

In the past I have done exactly that for McDonald's. Emptied the chiller of semi skimmed in a smaller lidl 🙈😂😂😂

I've also done it when I worked at Greggs.

But admittedly it was some time ago, before the world went insane it seems.

NorthernLights5 · 02/11/2023 03:24

I used to work in a Morrisons cafe. Fried eggs are made fresh but we didn't have frying pans etc. You can't just take whatever you like from the shop floor and cook it in the cafe, everything is ordered in from elsewhere and it would mess with stock levels and profit margins.

Omelettes are bought in frozen and microwaved when required. People expected to pay a few pounds for a full breakfast then would scream at us (mostly aged 16-18) if we explained why we couldn't do certain things.

Brunts12 · 02/11/2023 03:30

YABU, and I can’t believe you felt the need to “query this with a manager”.

Just because you have done it doesn’t make it okay.

If you had a visit and were using ingredients from anywhere else it would be an instant fail and an investigation would be started.

It isn’t “world gone mad”.

The laws around food preparation are so strict because people have died when food preparation workers have gone off piste and have the attitude of “it’ll probably be fine, what does it matter”.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/11/2023 04:14

Oh come on, how many people have died because McDonald's used milk bought in Lidl or Greggs picked up a few lettuces from Morrisons because their normal supplier had run out?

Precisely none.

Probably none, but DS works in Costa and if they run out of milk they have to restrict the menu, they're not allowed to pop to Tesco to get it.

@AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside

Any large company will have rules. Rules made at a corporate level. They will all work off the premise that if an action isn't going to result in a profit, the company aren't going to offer it. There likely isn't demand for bread and butter at Greggs, so there won't be a price for it given to staff, they'll just be told you can't do it. To you, your request is a ten second manageable job that they have facilities for, and you were prepared to pay for, so why not. But remember, the next customer could have a different, ten second manageable job about something else - maybe could you add a slice of tomato to my rainbow cake, I'm happy to pay. Etc.
a large company will have a blanket rule - this is what we offer, no deviations.
If you want bespoke you need to go to family run small businesses where they have flexibility.

GigiAnnna · 02/11/2023 07:50

Years ago when I worked for a well known food chain, the policy was that if anyone came in wanting a product with less items, eg a ham salad sandwich without tomato or butter, then we could do it. But we couldn't add items or change the way they are made. Supermarket cafes can't just take items from the shop floor either. I'm not sure about Morrisons but I know someone who works in the Asda cafe and it is ran by a catering company, it's not even owned by Asda.

Pottedpalm · 02/11/2023 07:58

It’s cheap shit food, reheated. Go to a decent cafe if you want a freshly cooked breakfast. One of the best, and cheapest, cafes in our local town is aimed at builders and delivers a freshly cooked Full English in minutes.

HouseofHolbein · 02/11/2023 08:11

Eggs are fried in Morrisons fresh. Well they are in ours. They have numerous trays of eggs delivered daily to keep up with requirements.

When they have too many staff can buy a tray for £1 😁 keeps us supplied at home...

The weirdest part of this story is that fried and poached eggs are much harder to make. Who'd expect a freshly poached egg from a supermarket caff?!

Not when you buy them prepared & just nuke them.

they won't be getting any dress eggs to scramble

@FishyTree as above

Pinkpinkpink15 · 02/11/2023 08:35

Totaly · 01/11/2023 22:25

Why not, just as a thought, go and support a small family run local cafe that cooks fresh food?

@Totaly

because they were AT Morrisons.

i don't know any Morrisons that are anywhere near a nice family run cafe.

in fact, even if I didn't have a weeks shopping and had a car I can't think of a single family run cafe AT ALL.

the OP just needs to accept places like Morrisons don't have short order chefs, they have what they have

Gobleki · 02/11/2023 10:54

Went to a chain restaurant that said they had no salt, despite being next door to m&s. I find the whole thing pathetic. Typical of the lack of brains and get up and go in this country. Shit food, shit staff, shit service. Everything is just about how things look of paper. I’ve given up going out to eat, it’s unbearable.

SiousieSoo · 02/11/2023 11:01

Sauvblanctime · 01/11/2023 20:44

No, but they don’t have the facilities. They literally told you it’s all bought in

This exactly. What are you expecting from a Morrisson's cafe? It is bog standard cheap as cheaps food outlet, using standardised arrangements which involve microwaving and plonking pre made food onto a plate. 😅

If you want bespoke scrambled eggs, then you need to find an actual cafe. I dont understand how people are not aware of this...

Are you always prone to such hyperbole? Giving up on eating out as it is unbearable... 😆

@Sauvblanctime

I wouldn’t have thought a chef is required to make scrambled egg.

Not in the same category as a restaurant chef, but you need someone who knows how to make scrambled egg. In the catering industry that would still be a chef/ cook, not supermarket cafe staff.

All that Morrisons cafe staff need to do in terms of food prep is put it in the oven/ microwave and press a button.

Gobleki · 03/11/2023 15:34

You think that no one ever gives things up because they become rubbish / not worth it!? Ok.

Gobleki · 03/11/2023 15:35

So traumatised about these eggs in their little plastic cases that I dreamt about them last night 😂

Notfeelinghunkydory · 03/11/2023 15:39

Supermarket cafes are the same as Weatherspoons when it comes to the eggs. Poached and scrambled eggs are pre prepared and bought in then microwaved. Any fresh eggs they have are only for fried eggs. It will be against company policy to use fresh eggs for scrambled or poached
