Got a sample of perfume and I am in LOVE. This one https://www.harveynichols.com/mizensir/ambre-magique-100ml-893018-84657/?source=shoppingads&gclid=CjwKCAjws9ipBhB1EiwAccEi1BHHazHuJs4-yqCIf18YiOiE6twshFZYH5uRCF6y0O8jBKgR6m4XxoCSfUQAvDD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

But .. £265!! I'd be unreasonable to even ask for this for Christmas would I!
Have any of you ever got any perfumes that high price? Do they last longer etc?

Perfume is a wonderful bit of self-care in my world. I have over 250 different scents (not all full bottles though!) and the few mins I spend every morning deciding which one to wear is like a mini-meditation 😁

I do blanch at some of the prices but if you can afford it, go for it. Mine range from TKMaxx cheapies to very niche and very expensive. I do like more unusual scents and try not to go around round smelling like everyone else, although there are definitely some days when a squirt of SJP Lovely just hits the spot!

There's a lot of marketing guff involved in selling perfume though and more expensive isn't necessarily 'better', although it should equate to higher-quality ingredients and more longevity.

The long-running Perfumista threads are a great place to chat about perfume if that's your thing!

Rubyupbeat · 02/11/2023 08:33

I am a bit traditional and love my coco chanel and mademoiselle chanel, which I thought was expensive. I wear it daily and it seems to last forever.
Go for it , it will make you happy.

Is there a swaps board here for perfumes? I have one I don't really like and it's nearly full.

KimberleyClark · 02/11/2023 08:38

I am a Gucci girl, love the Flora range and L’Occitane have some lovely fragrances too.

LillianGish · 02/11/2023 08:40

I'm curious about those of you who have 30 or more different scents. I prefer to have a bit of a signature scent - so I have a couple of summer scents (a beach/holiday one and another all round summer scent Ô de Lancome and Eau D'Hadrien) then a winter scent (including one that I always wear in December that my kids now actually associate with Christmas and which my mum used to wear so it also has that association for me as well). What infuriates me most is when a scent I love is discontinued - Penhaligon Blasted Bloom for instance. You can try to find something similar, but it won't be the same. What I say is if you love the scent OP then go for it. There is no greater mood enhancer. And if you love it then wear it - a spritz a day averaged out over the life of the bottle will be pennies not pounds. Better to do that than stash it away in the dark interspersing it with something sub-standard only to find that it gradually deteriorates, or worse than that you go off it!

We used to do loads of swaps on the perfumista boards in S&B (mainly samples or decants) but it doesn't seem to be such a thing now.

No harm in asking though! What is it; I have stuff I'd happily swap for something I want to try? PM me if you want.

MadamVastra · 02/11/2023 08:45

@LillianGish the fact that I have 6 deodorants on the go at any one time might tell you something about my fickle nature 😂

I do re purchase some perfumes as well

ButDaddyILoveHim · 02/11/2023 08:56

@LillianGish agree about Blasted Bloom, what a loss! There are a couple of bottles on ebay... I feel the same way about Traversee du Bosphore by L'Artisan Parfumeur, don't think I'll ever get over that divine scent being discontinued.

I have way too much perfume, really. I definitely don't need any more but it's a bit of an addiction and I get a huge amount of pleasure from it. There's too much out there that's interesting and delicious for me to ever have a signature scent, but I do have favourites that I gravitate to wearing often. I'm a huge fan of Tauer Perfumes, for example, and Au Coeur de Desert would be on my, er, desert island perfumes list 😂

Miller Harris is the absolute best. I have L'air de Rien which was specially created for Jane Birkin. I have been wearing it for the past twelve years, and every so often go on Ebay to grab a bottle of the pre-reformulation version.

Walked past their store 18 months ago - and due to label changes, everything in there was 50% off. Yeah, that was an expensive day! Am down to the last of my favourite though.

I don't buy in the £250 bracket. But I love good quality perfume from good perfumiers. The scent lasts and doesn't over power me with alcohol.

To the person who posted about small aromas. I love you!

BakedTattie · 01/11/2023 14:15

my husbands favourite is assassins creed. I usually get him a bottle once a year. It’s roughly
£220

This reminds me of when I asked for Black Panther instead of Black Phantom at the Kilian section in Harrods. Lol

Mikimoto · 02/11/2023 09:08

Far better to get one decent bottle than 4 x Armani/CK shite.

For something gorgeous with stunning packaging, anything by Floraïku.

For something cheap and cheerful, Fragonard.

Creed has entered chav territory, along with Canada Goose.

Try a smaller bottle

I bought a sample of this after reading such reviews but it wasn't for me. Maybe my nose is too plebeian. I just can't seem to find a perfume I really love these days. Lots that are nice but nothing that makes me want to sniff myself incessantly. I used to feel that way about Philosykos but that's waned.

TheLonelyGoatTurd · 02/11/2023 10:07

@ButDaddyILoveHim I've PM'd you.

YES! I’m absolutely fucking gutted over Traversee du Bosphore. I can’t believe they did that, considering it was one of their most celebrated perfumes (if not THE most celebrated).

Go for it OP. The last ‘big’ spend I did on a perfume was on Rahat Loukhoum by Lutens, but I’ve also bought Bortnikoff before with no regrets. If you can afford it then of course buy what you love.

MrShady · 02/11/2023 10:11

I'm a huge perfume fan so can't comment! Do it
Kyse is my favourite brand but I have everything from £5 stuff to £££. There's great cheap perfume and awful expensive stuff so I don't think the price equals how good it is necessarily

Gnomegnomegnome · 02/11/2023 10:16

I spend a lot on perfume but I can and it’s worth it to me.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 02/11/2023 10:45

I wish a perfume I liked would become popular. I can't stand Baccarat Rouge - and every third woman seems to drown themselves in the stuff.

Although I say that- I used to love Portrait of a lady but it's everywhere now. Same with Santal 33.

OP, if you like it, buy it. I'm a big fan of good dupes for more linear perfumes like Tom Ford, they lack the complexity of a lot of perfumes that are the same price, so I have no qualms buying a copy for £15.

Lndnmummy · 02/11/2023 10:53

My dh is an absolute perfume devotee and spends hundreds on them, for me and himself. I think he is absolutely insane doing this. I am the kind who buys the gift boxes in the christmas sales type so I can not fathom how anyone can spend that much. That said. I use them and they are lovely.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/11/2023 10:59

Just for the record, the ‘magical ingredient’ is ambergris, a substance produced in the digestive tract of sperm whales. And eventually ejected via their mouths, or pooed out.
I thought you’d like to know. 🙂

I’m pretty sure anyone into perfume knows that 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s not a secret.

@QuizzlyBears @Littlelucas

TKMaxx has got on their website 100ml Luna for £119 and 50ml Rose Prick for £199, which seem like good deals.
