Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

This is even odder! Why would you not have your phone with you? It's the whole point of a mobile phone.

I leave mine at home quite frequently. Why would I risk losing it when I don't need it?

For example, I don't take it to swimming lessons to sit in a locker that could be broken into.

The only real reason I take it into town with me is because I usually go for a walk on the way and track my steps. Nobody needs to call me in the hour I'm out, and if they do, they'll call back. The chances of anything being that urgent are vanishingly unlikely.

AbbeyGailsParty · 31/10/2023 12:13

Other stores are now doing the same. Really annoys me.
I stopped shopping in Tesco because of it.

Branster · 31/10/2023 12:14

It's a right faff remembering to use these loyalty cards in so many shops.
Why can't they just have realistic pricing for everybody?!
I saw this in Morrisons too.
All supermarkets are greedy.
Trying to pretend they are saving me money and that I'm at an advantage by using the loyalty card: that's what irritates me.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 31/10/2023 12:14

FrenchandSaunders · 31/10/2023 11:33

Surely the days of rummaging around the bottom of a crusty handbag looking for loyalty cards has passed. The vast majority of us have these things on our phones, it couldn't be easier or quicker!

Not really, much easier to get a card out of a purse than go through several screens to get to your app and the card on the app.

Also, there is a limit to how many apps you can have on some phones before they run out of memory. My previous phone was rubbish. Most people can't afford to keep upgrading their phone.

@Fahbeep You won’t have any good coping skills if anything really bad happens in your life like your dh getting a cancer that has no known treatment, your mil neglecting him so you have to give up a professional career to care for him 24/7 on your own and struggle to get back into employment while bills pile up after he dies young.

Remembering to take a clubcard into Tesco will look so easy by comparison.

Bit of a reach there!

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 12:17

@Snugglemonkey I know!

I don't think you can use the same card at the same time for two transactions, can you

I think we're at cross purposes.

I assumed that I, Ms E Wood could pay using my debit card but scan eg my mum's Nectar card so she gets the points (but I get the discount) in the name of Ms E Woodmum. I've done this in other places like cafes and local department stores where she has a (paper) loyalty card so she gets the points but I pay for the items I buy.

I very rarely use my Nectar card to actually pay for things so would always be using two cards.

WearyAuldWumman · 31/10/2023 12:21

I don't use things like the wallet feature or Apple Pay. I'm just too nervous of getting it wrong.

I'm not totally doddery - I'm in my early 60s - but I've reached the stage where there are certain apps and bits of tech that I'm not comfortable with.

When I'm shopping, I'll often leave my phone locked in the car so that's one less thing to carry: I don't use a handbag these days and I find loyalty cards a nuisance.

TeenLifeMum · 31/10/2023 12:22

It annoys me because dc can pop into the little Tesco on the way home from school and buy a chocolate bar etc (which I’m happy for them to do and is good for their independence) but they don’t have a club card so end up paying extra and unable to get the offers.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 31/10/2023 12:23

I don't see what's wrong with offering discounts to customers willing to join the loyalty scheme

My point is that they are not true discounts. The loyalty price is the "normal" price - they artificially inflate the price for others. However, as a pp said, the loyalty price may be lower than other shops too.

It's on the regulators' radars now as I said upthread.

Get them a spare card. They aren't meant to have one officially, but my teen uses one and doesn't have any issues - especially at the self-service checkouts

I have tried multiple times to add it to my wallet. Every time clubcard says it's not linked to a card. I call up customer services, they tell me there is no problem.

Not using tescos anymore isn't that much of a bother though. I get 90% of my shopping online and if I haven't got something I either go to the little coop we have nearby, or I just replan the meal.

Co-op has a similar system.

floatingnoodle · 31/10/2023 12:27

I avoid Tesco too. I have the clubcard on my phone but it takes a million attempts to sodding scan (unlike Lidl plus which always does it first time), even with the clubcard prices it’s still quite an expensive supermarket despite the average-to-poor quality, and it has the most depressing atmosphere of all my local supermarkets too.

WearyAuldWumman · 31/10/2023 12:27

Snugglemonkey · 31/10/2023 12:17

Aye. I've coped (or maybe not) with working full-time whilst caring for both my parents, caring for my late husband post triple by-pass and post stroke, eventually giving up my job two years before I was ready to, dealing with DH's death during lockdown, sorting out his estate...Now dealing with a dodgy contractor whilst living on reduced pension.

Arsing about with an extra card is just one extra embuggerance that I don't need.

I don't use Apple Pay and can see why it might worry you. The wallet feature is very handy for things like club cards though (long as you have your phone!) and I can't see how it could be misused. Great for cinema tickets etc too.
I think it might make your life easier to embrace the wallet at least for loyalty cards

I'm still trying to get used to WhatsApp... A cousin's daughter set up a group to keep me in touch with family after my husband died and put it on my phone for me.

I'm still finding that I don't always see messages. My brain struggles with new tech.

I remind myself of my mother trying to use the VCR.

Nope, ours doesn't. Nothing is cheaper through having the card - we just collect points that equal money off.

Remember that Coops are different geographically. I can't use my saver card from my home town in my local coop for example.

Sorry, @WearyAuldWumman I'd obviously written my post before your latest one appeared!
I'm very sorry about your dh.

If they can remember their purse with their money in, then I’m sure they can remember the card that’s in their purse.

That shows how little you have dealt with aging relatives.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/10/2023 12:33

I posted earlier to say I keep the plastic cards with my debit card in my purse
I really don't get why there is so much angst about this!!
I'm disabled and mainly shop in Sainsbury's as it's closest
Most things I buy regularly are discounted at various weeks so I buy 2 and save £5
Frankly I wish this is the only thing I had to get het up about
and I never have had junk emails
Don't care if they have my data
Other shops who email receipts do annoy me

Snowdayplease · 31/10/2023 12:34

@WearyAuldWumman You possibly have notifications turned off for WhatsApp.
you can access that from the Settings menu on the iPhone - scroll down to "Notifications" and see if the box next to WhatsApp is checked.

It's not just Tesco who do this - we were caught out when down near Inverness a couple of weeks ago, not realising (because we were not really concentrating) that a lot of the offer prices in Morrisons needed an app/card too. I am going to try and download it online before we go next time, as we always like to shop in Morrisons when we are away (none up here).

Maphat · 31/10/2023 12:36

Couldn’t agree more!!

Tangled123 · 31/10/2023 12:38

I’m ok with scanning a barcode to collect points that I can use to pay for things like Disney plus. I dont find it a faff and I don’t care if Tesco know what I’m buying. It’s not very interesting information.
I’m not ok with them charging me more when I don’t have the card though. That’s mean. I agree with everyone who says the Clubcard prices aren’t cheaper than normal, it’s the non-Clubcard prices that are higher.
