Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

And the data collection is just so they can tailor their offers to things you actually buy. They sell more, you get a discounted rate - I don't see the problem.

Letsgetouttahere2023 · 31/10/2023 11:46

I agree OP

I also hate that if you forget a coin for a trolley they want you to buy a token for £3 and non refundable if you return thr token at the end. And refuse cashback unless you buy something, which at the customer service desk where they sell the tokens leaves you with a choice of vapes or lotto tickets . No thanks

Also walked out of there the other day for this reason, needed a trolley for a massive shop. Went to sainsbury instead.

Don't think I'll go back to tesco until this changes

I don't do loyalty cards of any description on principle. I'm sick of being tracked and monitored the whole time, everywhere I go.

Most of the time I don't use a smartphone either.

Fabulous response - good for you!

Surely thats on the person who hasnt bothered to get themselves ready before they get to the check out??

Yes of course but we're all human! Sometimes people don't have it to hand, mine fell out of phone wallet for example. Anyway my point was that the scanning isn't the palaver that everyone is making out the OP said

I totally agree, and I really feel for some older or vulnerable people who may struggle with remembering their card or examining the prices

If they can remember their purse with their money in, then I’m sure they can remember the card that’s in their purse.

MassageForLife · 31/10/2023 11:48

They aren't an ATM... why should they spend money on a card transaction just for you to get some cash? Fyi you can put any purchase through the customer service desk - they have tills. Don't turn up with a full trolley, but a handful of items is fine.

Surely the days of rummaging around the bottom of a crusty handbag looking for loyalty cards has passed. The vast majority of us have these things on our phones, it couldn't be easier or quicker!

I hate having to take my phone shopping with me
But unfortunately the Clubcard+ discount is only on the app.
Bit annoying

This is even odder! Why would you not have your phone with you? It's the whole point of a mobile phone.

I don't mind companies like Tesco, Sainsburys and Boots knowing my purchasing habits but accept that 2 tier pricing is problematic for some people like teenagers who can't get a meal deal discount because they are too young to register a loyalty card. Supermarket pricing has always been about smoke and mirrors imo. Some items fluctuate in price so often that you lose sight of what a reasonable price for the item is.

Just give your teenagers access to your Clubcard. My kids have my Tesco Clubcard saved in their phone wallet.

Upwiththelark76 · 31/10/2023 11:56

Don’t do tescos anymore as I am the same with the club card . Sainsburys going the same way . Morrisons is a No as it’s ridiculously expensive . It’s lidle for me and Asda

dottiedodah · 31/10/2023 11:56

I shop at Sainsburys . I am not the most organised person ,but have my Nectar Card on me all the time .No bother !Also Tesco as well . Nice surprise when bill is lower surely?

TheCompactPussycat · 31/10/2023 11:57

SoupDragon · 31/10/2023 09:26

Since I got rid of my Clubcard and Nectar card I've hardly had any junk mail so we know what they do with the data they get!!

I don't get any junk mail at all and I have a clubcard and a nectar card 🤷🏻‍♀️

This.

You're getting junk mail because you forgot to check the box to say you didn't want to hear from "their trusted partners".

If this is true, then why do they have to charge, 40-50-60% or more to people who don't have their clubcard? Why not just stick to the scheme where they said 'if you have a clubcard, you can get a point (worth a penny) for every pound you spend, and then buy stuff with the money you accumulate?' Why the nasty tactic of charging shedloads more if you don't buy into their clubcard scheme?

Also, many years ago, when I had a Tesco clubcard (around late noughties/early tens,) I got vouchers for money off stuff, like 5p to 10p off a £3 item, and half the time it was for something I never buy. We have Ariel washing powder, and they used to send vouchers for Persil. I would buy their own brand of beans, and they sent me vouchers for Heinz beans. (Their own brand were 30p a tin, and Heinz were 50p a tin. So even with the 3p-5p off, I was still paying much more.) This is just 2 of many examples of how useless and pointless the clubcard is.

The clubcard system is skewed, and fucked up, and does not benefit the customer in any way.

GrimGrinningGhosts · 31/10/2023 12:01

This is Stocard on the Apple Watch (also an app on the phone).
I rarely carry a purse and use a combination of Apple Pay and Sto Card.

I usually have my phone in my bag but unless I need it for the app, I only take my wallet into the store

RaraRachael · 31/10/2023 12:01

They are not discounts club card prices are the same as regular prices in Asda/Morrisons.

That's fine if you've got them all locally. My nearest Asda is 20 miles away and Morrisons at least 50.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 12:05

I don't have apple and I don't think my phone has a wallet

Have you a smart phone? Either Apple or android,it doesn't matter.

Both have the 'wallet' function.

As you said you had difficulty opening the app, I assume you do have a smartphone so then you can choose to add the card to your wallet, select it from there to tap, then use Apple Pay or equivalent to pay, if you wish.

The teenagers thing - mine has a photo of my barcode and uses that at Tesco.

SweetBirdsong · 31/10/2023 11:36

Tesco are a disgrace! Charging higher prices (sometimes stupidly higher prices,) for something, if you don't have their clubcard.

Morrisons do it too, but their prices without a storecard aren't quite as bad - it's still about 15-20% higher without one though. I do actually do some shopping at Morrisons, but hell will freeze over before I get a Morrisons 'More Card.' Not only do I not want my data harvested, but also, I don't appreciated being coerced and bullied into getting their storecard.

Tesco are far worse. Charging a little more if you don't have a storecard is fine (like 5%) but some things in TESCO, are 50% - 60% more, and some have an even higher % than that added on. A few things are double - or more than double, without a storecard. Nasty. Hmm And for this reason, I rarely go in there. I spend about £70 a year in Tesco.

As a few posters have said, you don't pay LESS if you have a storecard, you pay much more if you don't have one. At one time, supermarkets would let you collect points for every purchase, and then when you'd got so many, you got vouchers for money off.

Now, they are practicing underhand tactics, and making you pay more - a LOT more - if you don't have a clubcard.

Why are they all so desperate for people to have one? Confused Stores trying to force you into clubcards is one of the reasons I do 75%-80% of my shopping at Aldi and Lidl.

Someone put on Twitter the other day that Tesco are basically bullying people into having their clubcard at this point, and they're right.

😂 if that is genuine on the right that bottle of wine is 8 quid in asda. I honestly have no time for this shite. I do have the asda loyalty scheme and prices are falling more rapidly in there than Aldi, but I stick to those shops without this bollocks. I'm not keen on asda knowing what I buy, but I don't do a full shop in there.

It does seem like a tactic for people to not understand the real value of something in a store. I can see how you might lose sight of that with vastly different prices in a shop. That does seem like their end game. Vastly over price for non scheme participants and slowly increase the prices for most things for scheme participants so its above average but they think its cheap, whilst throwing in a few crazily cheap prices to get people talking and coming back.

chocolatefiends · 31/10/2023 12:06

Sainsburys have introduced the same nonsense! Unfortunately they're the two supermarkets closest to me. I use the market in my two and local shops as much as possible, but between them they don't have everything I need.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 12:07

Just more stuff to carry

Your phone equates to 'more stuff to carry'?! Really? Just put it in a pocket, or in your shopping bag if no pockets.

Oldsu · 31/10/2023 12:07

My DH got a deal with his club card he needed new boxers they were two packs for the the price of one with it

Mostlyoblivious · 31/10/2023 12:09

I had a lovely cashier at the till ask the customer behind me to use their club card so I could have the discounts after I said I didn’t have mine with me - it was really lovely of her to do that

Rincol · 31/10/2023 12:10

Jesus Christ @EarringsandLipstick are you posting from Tesco head office?

FrenchandSaunders · 31/10/2023 12:11

That prosecco thing was fake.
