Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:18

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

@justteanbiscuits we've had all this nonsense further down in the thread....

Please do share where you are seeing Aldi Irish cream for £7.13 per litre ..

I'm not, it's £4.99 for 70cl, and I just did some maths to convert like for like size.

https://groceries.aldi.co.uk/en-GB/p-ballycastle-irish-country-cream-liqueur-70cl/4088600141770

Again, as I have said. I'm really thrilled for all the people posting their 'bargains' with absolutely no thought in their precious little lives for people who simply aren't able to manage loyalty cards - mainly the elderly and those with learning disabilities. A few who are trying to keep as much independence as possible, but this is just something that is too much for them to manage.

MassageForLife · 05/12/2023 17:36

That's not their Irish Cream, which is made with whisky. That's their country cream which is made with mostly wine as the alcohol content.

Their Irish cream is £7.99 for 70cl.

Behindyouiam · 05/12/2023 18:22

@justteanbiscuits as I thought, you're wrong!!

What a surprise.....

Which @justteanbiscuits I did a quick calculation to show that means is £11.41 a litre.

Yes, that’s what I made it too.

My god! Why can’t people believe that you can save money by having a Clubcard?! 😂

Companies have been running schemes like this forever! You can get cheaper theatre tickets if you’re a member or discounted glasses if you’re on a contact lens direct debit scheme 🤷‍♀️They’re all ways for the companies to make money out of you but there are savings available 🙄🙄🙄

As for the way these schemes are somehow prejudiced against the elderly. Come on! Most things become a bit trickier as you get older - but putting one extra card in your purse is hardly going to be the deal-breaker for most.

Why does it offend you so much that people can save a couple of quid? As many of you have pointed out, we’re paying a high enough cost for it in telling Tesco our name and a random date of birth 😱😨

Thelnebriati · 06/12/2023 10:24

This isn't the old days, you aren't saving for Green Shield Stamps. What's new and different about this scheme is the extent of the data scraping, if you think its just about telling them your D.O.B. and email you really haven't understood what they are doing with your data.

Telling others what I buy at Tesco?

Am I bothered? They can do whatever they want with knowing that I buy cream crackers every couple of weeks and milk every week. It makes absolutely no difference to me. Even more so that I use different supermarkets, so Tesco never see my "overall" purchasing patterns because there are some things I never buy at Tesco but buy elsewhere. I use Tesco for things they stock that others don't and for things where they're cheaper. I use other supermarkets for things Tesco don't stock and where they're cheaper than Tesco. They also don't know what I buy from Amazon, what I buy from the corner shop, what I buy from M&S, etc. At best, they only get a small part of my shopping patterns. I'm sure it's useful information for their data analysts who live and breathe that kind of data.

My understanding is that they sell it to companies that then use it to target adverts at people they think might be interested in their products.

Is there something more sinister that I should know about? Because that doesn't bother me. I'm fairly immune to advertising - unless they manage to target me with an advert for something that I am already in the market for.

MassageForLife · 06/12/2023 11:04

Oh, and for anyone interested, Tesco have clearly raised prices for tubs of sweets - because heroes, quality street and roses are £3.89 this week with your clubcard. £5.50 at Sainsbury's.

Unfortunately not celebrations - which are the ones I might have been tempted by...

In the same way that this very website shows adverts based on the topics you view/contribute to and your overall googling history!

Perhaps those posters who object to Clubcard shouldn't be using MN??

They haven’t got my date of birth or my email. I’ve had my Clubcard for decades, all they’ve got is my name and address. I don’t know how many times it has to be said but you can just make all this stuff up. I’ve bought online from sites requesting my date of birth, I’ve lied every time.

I use a VPN and an adblocker. I never see any online ads.

The non club card prices can be, often are, twice the price of the clubcard price - the item's price is inflated for non club card.

But yet again, I'm really thrilled that you don't have any care for the independence and expense for the most vulnerable in society.

Behindyouiam · 06/12/2023 13:43

@justteanbiscuits stop with the faux worry about the independence etc.

It's your way at having a dig at people that won't acquiesce to your view on Clubcards.

You’re just making things up now, I’m afraid.

There are discounts available. The end.

How is having an extra card such a burden? Can you explain that? You don’t need an app or anything- I literally just scan a card. The same as paying.

I think you’re just looking for drama.

No, it's not. I love data and am in no way concerned about the data Tescos get.

I am concerned about my elderly mother who, yes, it is one step too far in early stage dementia who is desperate to keep as much of her independence as possible, and is being over charged constantly. I am concerned about my autistic relative who is being taught life skills in order for him to be able to live outside the home in his 30's who can be taught what to buy and how to pay, but beyond that would be too much.

But yay. You get to pay less than them so that's excellent

And being told I am just looking for drama because I care about my family members isn't rude?! Oh, probably not because you agree with it, so how can it possibly be rude. FFS.

I'm certainly no conspiracy theorist and am quite happy to be using store cards. Yes, indeed, I can see that the data they are collecting is more than just D.O.B. and email. Obviously they can make fairly accurate assumptions (although they are only assumptions) about all sorts of aspects of your life based on what you buy and when. So if you are buying newborn nappies, they can assume you have a newborn baby. They can make educated guesses on your income level and job type based on what groceries you purchase. They can make assumptions about your health based on what OTC medicines you buy or assumptions about your religion or dietary requirements/preferences based on which speciality foods you buy.

But, unless I am missing something, it is all assumption and not hard fact.

I have said many times, that the old system of getting vouchers, saving points etc in exchange for data was great. BUT the inflating of prices for those not using clubcard is not. If you fail to understand that then I am sorry.
