Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

Nope - bloody love a Tesco clubcard deal. It’s so easy, I don’t have to shove a load of stuff on the conveyor, my kids are entertained by scanning the stuff…. I’ve my club card in my phone apps and attached to my car keys so have never had a problem with forgetting it.

I saved £88 this week!

SandandSky · 04/12/2023 18:04

I used to ship at Aldi but with clubcard prices the price difference in my generic shop is about £15 so I stick with Tesco

My mother was very computer literate. She was using a computer in the 1980's, had a mobile phone from 1990. Unfortunately, age has a tendency to remove the ability to remember and use things. She's well over 80, and like most of her friends, in getting increasingly forgetful and confused by things.

But excellent that YOUR mother could use it fine.

Exactly this. There is an 'I'm all right Jack' mentality on this thread - from some. Not ALL elderly people are au fait with using tech, indeed, there are more who cannot use it than there are those who can.

Some posters on here do seem to be getting very offended and uptight about posters critisizing Tesco. How strange. Imagine getting so affronted about someone else berating a massive store that makes millions of pounds a year.

Tesco should hang their head in shame with this two-tier pricing scam. I really hope they get the book thrown at them and get a massive multi million pound fine. They will no doubt bump up their prices even more, but people will still pay the prices, as they are so bizarrely and hilariously loyal to them. Again, strange and bizarre.

I am shocked that some people are falling for this scam. They really believe they are saving money by having a clubcard! Confused

@FreshWinterMorning some posters do seem to be quite bizarre about tescos! Were you the poster that said Tescos staff were rude and aloof?

Now that's totally mad! What an insane and OTT thing to say, like all 344000 of the staff and Rudd and aloof!

I mean have a Baileys and just chill!

*rude

And have a Clubcard Baileys, it's cheaper than anywhere else, for a litre bottle!

How many more times are you going to say they should have the book thrown at them (hopefully a cheap Clubcard reduce book)?

And you think others are bizarre?

SharSharBinks · 02/12/2023 20:22

Is it that the Clubcard deals are bargains or do they just hike up everything else?

This is what a watchdog is looking into. How they are hugely bumping up prices, and then forcing people to get a clubcard purely to get the items at a NORMAL price. It's not just Tesco that does it, but they are the worst by far. They are being looked into though, so they will get their comeuppance.

I am just gently eyerolling. Quite shocked at the strength of feeling and vitriol posted in support of a faceless company. And quite shocked that, for some many, because it works for them they don't care about anyone else, especially the vulnerable.

I'm switching between eyerolling, laughing at how gullible people are and what utter sheep they are, and feeling angry at how Tesco are conning people into thinking they're getting a bargain with their clubcard. Not everyone wants a clubcard, and Tesco should not be coercing and manipulating people into them, by over-inflating their prices HUGELY, and only making them a reasonable/ normal price if they get the dumb clubcard!

As I said, several other stores do it too, but Tesco are the worst.

And yeah, the attitude that some people have - like 'my elderly mother is fine with tech,' and not seeming to care that not ALL elderly people are fine with tech,' is disgusting frankly...

I need to restock my favourite instant noodles, and knew that the local Tescos sells them so went there. I've always paid around £1.20 for them. This time they were £2.80, or £1.10 with clubcard. Just seemed a ridiculous price. I came home and ordered them online.

FreshWinterMorning · 04/12/2023 18:53

@justteanbiscuits That is disgusting! But sounds very typical of Tesco ... That's what they do. Virtually double the price for people without their clubcard, and have it at a normal price with a clubcard.

Question is, why are they sooooo desperate for people to have a clubcard? What's in it for them? Confused

Its very simple, so they can work out peoples shopping habits.
Sainsbury has 80 pages of current nectar prices on their web site. Exactly the same method asTesco club deals.
Stop whinging and get a loyalty card if you want the cheapet prices.

I’m getting that sense as well. I’m a very savvy shopper and have all the apps, but that doesn’t prevent me from understanding that not everyone is.

I spoke to a friend about this following this thread as he works in the industry and he said supermarkets feel completely justified in this kind of two tier pricing and there’s no room for measures like giving the best available prices to the elderly.

I think he was vaguely threatened by it, as a supplier to the supermarkets, because the food supplier’s margins are so tight.

So you've not read anyone else's responses then??? Just jumped in and tried to act all clever.

Behindyouiam · 04/12/2023 19:53

@justteanbiscuits have you actually read the responses or just got so unnecessarily angry??

Some stuff is cheaper than any other super market with club card? Can you not understand that?

Yeah this. Some emotional intelligence from some would be nice. And to understand that not everyone is the same. Some people simply don't WANT a clubcard, and should not be forced/coerced/bullied into one, by being made to pay as much as double without one. And as has been said, some people simply find it hard to use one.

Also - as has been said - some people only have a Tesco near them and no other stores nearby, and they can't drive, so have to use that store. Some who are unable to use a clubcard or do not WANT one will therefore be penalised by having to pay higher prices. Do Tesco (and other stores doing this,) give a damn? Do they hell! I can't believe some are refusing to admit this.

The level of ignorance - and the failure to think about anyone but themselves (from some people) is astounding.

That sounds about right. Tesco (and any other stores operating this rip-off storecard bullshit,) are not interested in what is best for the customer. They only care about themselves.

The point is they inflate the non club card price, which negatively impacts the most vulnerable in society, who are often those who can afford it least.

And not everyone has access to multiple supermarkets.

ClareBlue · 04/12/2023 20:29

So the biggest consumer data analysis company was bought out by Tesco in the 100 millions. They well know the value of the data and are forcing people to provide it as a business strategy. And it's absolutely not just what you buy to be able to send a coupon. They use data for assessing marketing strategies, times of shopping, payment methods and much more. They sell data to non retail organisations. It's no coincidence that consumers in Countries where they know the consequences of data survalience, like ex Soviet Countries, do not accept this at all. Most posts here are just what they want. Don't question it as long as I get a 20 Euro saving, which actually isn't anyway. But when social welfare is restricted to those buying alcohol, or we have social services intervening because of what you buy for family diets, or you are refused a ublic srctor job based on your shopping habbits, then people might think differently.
But that's so far fetched that it won't happen everyone says.
We literally stopped a findamental 800 year old right of freedom of movement and assembly in every Western democracy over night a few years ago with limited unrest or resistance. Nobody would believe that would happen before it did.
Of course there was a good reason. There always is.
I wouldn't trust Tesco with even my email address. Data is precious.

ohdamnitjanet · 04/12/2023 21:11

I was very happy to get a litre of Bailey’s for a tenner with my Clubcard, that’s definitely a bargain.

Thelnebriati · 04/12/2023 21:16

The last two posts sum up the issue concisely.

PrimitivePerson · 04/12/2023 21:22

@ClareBlue As someone who has had their privacy boundaries well and truly violated, and suffered all sorts of interference in my everyday life, albeit by a religious organisation cult rather than a government, I wholeheartedly agree with your post.

I absolutely do not consider parting with all sorts of data that can be analysed and sold for huge sums of money to be worth a couple of bottles of cheap Baileys, and I resent the hell out of having to pay more for everyday essentials because I actually think privacy is valuable.

GreenAppleCrumble · 05/12/2023 06:21

@FreshWinterMorning

How they are hugely bumping up prices, and then forcing people to get a clubcard purely to get the items at a NORMAL price.

You are coming across as a tiny bit unhinged. If you have a look along the shelf at, say, the biscuit aisle, you will see ‘normal price, normal price, normal price, reduced Clubcard price, normal price.’ Most things are not Clubcard price. You can avoid it altogether if you like. There are still thousands of ‘Aldi-matched’ prices there for you to see.

As for ‘not all elderly people are comfortable with tech’ or whatever…. Can you tell me what is so ‘tech’ about having an extra card in your purse, in addition to the card you’re going to pay with?

It’s a business, so, yes, they are trying to make money out of you. Like literally every other business 🤷‍♀️

Yes you've said before about your quite unique situation. That's fine, then do not use Clubcard etc, just buy the other items .

Us Clubcard users are not bothered that Tesco know our shopping habits, it's not a concern for us.

I find you're scaremongering based on your situation.

If Tesco is your only shop, do not buy the club card items if you don't want them?

But often I do want them. Meal deals are 50p more expensive without a clubcard.

How is it fair that I'm being ripped off for everyday essentials because I've been abused?

Bully for you if you're happy for everyone to know everything about your shopping habits in order to get cheaper stuff, although I think you're an idiot for it, quite frankly.

Behindyouiam · 05/12/2023 08:02

@PrimitivePerson oh well, you're stick between a rock and a hard place then.

Maybe Tesco will have the book thrown at them, I highly doubt it though. But if not you'll have to navigate shopping else where or paying higher prices or giving false details for your club cards.

None of which you want to do, but they would be short term fixes for you? Given your concern on data sharing.
