Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:18

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

@PrimitivePerson it's not because of tescos, it's because of what's happened to you! Exactly my point.

PrimitivePerson · 30/11/2023 16:05

I still have a right not to give away my personal information. I shouldn't be penalised financially for it.

I'm honestly amazed at how little people care about their personal data.

You’re not being penalised. You’re not being rewarded because you refuse the reward mechanism. Do you seriously care about Tesco knowing which items are in your weekly shop? Seriously?

PrimitivePerson · 30/11/2023 16:09

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 16:07

@PrimitivePerson the person behind me in the queue knows what I'm buying, the person who picks my online shop knows, I don't fecking care. I honestly can't believe people write to their MP about this.

It's not the people packing my bag or standing behind me I care about. They're not the ones profiting from analysing my habits and then trying to manipulate me.

Yeah, I do, actually.

BIossomtoes · 30/11/2023 16:10

How are you manipulated? Other than getting coupons for more money off the things you buy most often?

EVERYTHING supermarkets do is manipulative. They're incredibly dishonest, and only get away with it because we all have to eat.

I'd like to see an answer to that, too.

I don't care that Tesco know which products I buy regularly. What I do care about is that Lindor have been cheaper at Tesco than ANYWHERE else (IF you have a clubcard), including at the Lindor outlets and all other shops, for months now. We love those little chocolate balls!

BIossomtoes · 30/11/2023 16:18

Wish you hadn’t told me that @VickyEadieofThigh.

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 16:19

@PrimitivePerson living with that level of suspicion is not healthy, this must have caused issues with other areas of your life.

Yes, we do have eat and cannot see an issue with supermarkets knowing what I eat.

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 16:21

@VickyEadieofThigh surely that can't be true.........it's all a con after all?

VickyEadieofThigh · 30/11/2023 16:22

BIossomtoes · 30/11/2023 16:18

Wish you hadn’t told me that @VickyEadieofThigh.

They're definitely on at the same price until 25 December! Including the lush salted caramel and the double chocolate ones!

IncompleteSenten · 30/11/2023 16:22

It's hardly a scam. I think everyone knows how it works. Deciding that you don't actually care if Tesco knows your name and what groceries you buy does not mean you are being scammed.

Everyone knows how companies sales and discounts are nothing of the sort.

They want to buy my name and which brand of beans I buy in return for a few quid off my shopping compared to what I would otherwise pay (discount inflated prices tomayto tomato it adds up to the same thing however you put it. Pay a lower or a higher amount) They're welcome to it. They can have my bra size for an extra tenner.

If there is a sinister reason they're gathering that information that will be to my detriment I haven't learned of it yet.

I have researched Lindor prices extensively and can confirm they're cheapest at Tesco IF you have a clubcard.

I owe you big time and will be for ever in your debt. Thank you so much.

Friendfoe1 · 30/11/2023 16:27

I really like the Clubcard pricing, it’s hardly difficult 🤷‍♀️

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 30/11/2023 16:28

Trying to be balanced about it, I could see how supermarket loyalty cards could be used by the government or 'big society' when they bring in the social credit system, so that they would know how much 'bad' food you buy/have bought compared with your 'good' food choices, related to the size of your family, and prevent you from buying more or even ramp up your own personal price for it, as a disincentive - kind of like rationing, but 'for your own good' rather than because of shortages.

However, that would be driven by the government of the time rather than the supermarkets, and they would have to bring in some seriously totalitarian laws that the supermarkets, with all of their considerable might, would fight bitterly; and of course, you could always just not use a loyalty card at all - I presume they wouldn't make them compulsory (albeit you would then be paying the higher-tier prices anyway).

Because your data is being sold.

Sainsbury's and Tesco sell the information to other companies who use it for advertising.

... 'It is worrying that a growing number of retailers are taking advantage of a cost-of-living crisis by pushing shoppers into swapping their personal data for discounts that used to be available to all.

'There is a serious risk that shoppers will be coerced into handing over their data if the trend of tying access to special offers to owning a loyalty card continues, making privacy a luxury available only to those who can afford it.'

'Shoppers will understandably use loyalty schemes to save money, but most people will have no idea that Tesco, Sainsbury's and other retailers sell on data gleaned from their weekly shop to third parties on an industrial scale.

It used to be that you'd get a bit of a trade-off in exchange for your data - not nearly as much as the company selling it but a little bit of a benefit - a day out at Legoland or something for eg.

Now however you are financially penalised for not handing over your data, because you will be overcharged for food and household goods.

What do supermarkets REALLY do with your loyalty card data?

Big member discounts have made loyalty cards hard to avoid. But what data do the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury's collect - and what do they do with it?

Loads of companies, particularly online sell data. So what?

adomizo · 30/11/2023 16:42

It's fine.. except when you are in Ireland on holiday and your UK card doesn't work and you don't have an Irish one. So annoying as it's so much more expensive.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 30/11/2023 16:47

I've just picked up a few bottles of Baileys.

Full price £22

Club card price £10

That's fine with me. 🥂🍾🍺🍻🍷🍸

Exactly. Moaning about paying more when you don't become a member. Bonkers.

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 16:52

@MissBuffyAnneSummers £10 is the normal price in some places - ASDA and Ocado.
£22 is taking the piss.

Depdawg · 30/11/2023 16:52

Looking forward to my Co-op Christmas bonus.
£75 quid last year to spend in store.
That's what you get for being a member.

So penalising people for not handing over data is atrocious behaviour. Your data is making Tesco a lot of money. Fine (ish) if people choose to hand it over and get a fraction back of what Tesco makes from them in the form of pizza express vouchers. Not fine if people actually have to pay more money for food and household items as a direct consequence of not handing over their data.

That's really how you're looking at it?
Strange.
So you miss out then. That's on you.
