Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:18

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

Bloody hell, over investment or what @FreshWinterMorning? You’ve stopped shopping at Tesco, wtf do you care about what other people do? I’ll tell you something for nothing, if Tesco are fined millions it will be at their customers’ expense - huge corporates never lose.

Yes the level of over investment is weird, even deciding the staff are rude and aloof!

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 14:12

@justteanbiscuits Tesco will not take into account single shoppers, it will make a business decision, which it has done.

I was commenting on YOUR comment. That everyone has the choice to shop elsewhere. They don't always have that choice.

Deathwillbebutapause · 30/11/2023 14:20

The Co Op is the only one whose shop card I do use just because you can actually use it to pay for shopping if you have accumulated enough credit. So over the course of a year I usually get about £30 to buy treats at Christmas, OR I can use some of that at any time to buy milk or whatever if I have forgotten my bank card. It's so handy and it's valuable enough that I don't mind trading my data for that perk.

But Tesco, or Sainsbury's with its charging £26 a kilo for lamb as opposed to £13 a kilo with a Nectar card? They can eff off.

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 14:50

@Notanotherhousepost you are missing the point. TESCO clubcard prices are their ordinary prices. They compare more or less with other supermarkets - sometimes cheaper, sometimes more expensive, but not widely so. The equivalent non clubcard price is always extremely expensive and way off what anyone else is charging for that item.

It is a way to get shoppers to give them their data. So the data must be extremely valuable to go to so much effort to get it.

Far more weird to personally defend/excuse a corporation. Tesco is not your friend.

PrimitivePerson · 30/11/2023 15:10

I've contacted my MP about this issue - differential pricing for card holders should be illegal.

When I was a teenager, I got involved in a very extreme and controlling church, where I suffered significant abuse that has affected me ever since. One aspect of this was a very excessive level of policing of my behaviour, and I effectively had no privacy at all.

As a result, nothing will convince me that Tesco has a right to knowing all my shopping habits, however cheap their products are in return. I have a right to not give away my personal data, and I shouldn't be penalised for it.

BIossomtoes · 30/11/2023 15:14

I have a right to not give away my personal data

Of course you do. So you can shop somewhere else, not use a Clubcard or take out one in a fictitious name - you do know they don’t check ID, don’t you?

No. There's a principle involved. As more shops do this, it's harder to avoid.

BIossomtoes · 30/11/2023 15:17

Just take the card out as Ms Datarefuse, they won’t even notice.

I think you're being quite contemptuous of people who have a problem with this. To those of us unhappy with it, it's a really fecking big problem.

It's not my fault you can't see you're being scammed by an obnoxious company that treats you with utter contempt.

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 15:20

I will never understand those on here who spend time defending large corporations. Do you think they care about you?

Exactly! Especially Tesco. They won't rest until they destroy all their competitors, even really tiny ones. We all suffer for that.

It’s not my fault that I don’t care if I’m being scammed either (I’m not). What an absolutely ridiculous first world problem. Anyone would think Tesco was a monopoly and other shops didn’t exist.

What insane nonsense.

You do realise the "One Stop" chain of franchises, mostly tiny independent stores, is actually run by Tesco, don't you???

Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury, B&M, Home Bargains, Iceland, Aldi, Lidl, Booths, and before them, Safeway, Fine Fayre, Netto, and loads of other "Big" chains all caused the demise of independent "corner shops". There is no monopoly or even close to it. There are many supermarket chains and as some fail and disappear, others start up.

You're deluded if you think there's even a tiny chance that Tesco will destroy ALL their competitors.

In a lot of towns, alternatives don't exist.

In a lot of towns Tesco doesn’t exist. There isn’t one where my son lives. And what part of not caring that I’m being scammed (in your imagination) don’t you understand?

Sorry this happened to you, but you are catastrophizing about Tescos being even remotely like the church situation, concentrate on being able to compartmentalise.

DiaNaranja · 30/11/2023 16:01

It doesn't cause me any issues as have a clubcard and nectar card, plus the apps on my phone if I don't have my card, and I find being a member is worth it, as it's free, and for the vouchers in the post too! I often get £15 worth of money off vouchers, which can be used off my shopping or doubled up for meals out etc so in that sense, it's free money I wouldn't have had if I hadn't swiped my card. I get it must be frustrating if you don't have a clubcard, but that's why it's done, so more people sign up for a clubcard, and ultimately do more of their shopping at their store. I've actually done quite alot of work behind the scenes in finance and profits data for major brands, and during the first financial year of "clubcard prices", figures showed that for the few (2-3) that decided to "boycott" the retailer because they didn't like the new structure, between 20-30 more signed up to have a clubcard and became valuable customers, so from a business point of view, it's a positive decision. Alot customers who have a clubcard love seeing the "savings" they get at the checkout, feel like they're getting a special deal, and end up shopping there more often, so it really was a brilliant move by Tesco, and other supermarkets i.e Sainsbury's, and alternative sorts of shops such as Hobbycraft, are now doing the same... special prices for card holders. So it's obviously something that's been proven to work in boosting sales and overall footfall, and will become more commonplace across the board as others jump on the bandwagon of "rewarding" customers for shopping with them. Vote with your feet if you feel you want to make a point, but it won't really make a difference as the vast majority of shoppers love feeling like they're being rewarded and getting a discount, and this is certainly how the loyalty cards are working across the board, and will continue to become more commonplace among supermarkets and other areas of retail.

I still have a right not to give away my personal information. I shouldn't be penalised financially for it.

I'm honestly amazed at how little people care about their personal data.

Thanks for that very demeaning comment. My life is actually very difficult because of what's happened to me.

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 16:07

@PrimitivePerson the person behind me in the queue knows what I'm buying, the person who picks my online shop knows, I don't fecking care. I honestly can't believe people write to their MP about this.
