Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

@Behindyouiam I don't think so - it was definitely LBC and Nick Ferrari was presenting. At this rate I should recall it all in the next few hours lol

Drhow · 30/11/2023 12:32

You’re making a massive deal out of nothing. I’ve used the clubcard for years and it’s just a QR code on my phone. Don’t even have to open the app because I added it to my apple wallet so it takes all of 2 seconds to find and scan it. No hassle at all.

Have you read ANY of this thread? Like any posts at all? Like ANY of it? Confused

Seriously. I can't even...... ! Hmm

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 12:35

LOL. I hope they do too. Absolutely shameful how they do this to people! And as I said, I also question the Tesco are making huge profits claim! Didn't take me long to find an article that said their profits are dropping! Not shocked tbh!

Crikey it's optional to shop there, it's hardly shameful!

Moonshine5 · 30/11/2023 12:36

@FreshWinterMorning
I have found your input interesting and thought-provoking. We forget and sometimes act like sheep.
Thank you

Thank you

Or we get cheaper groceries ...

Moonshine5 · 30/11/2023 12:38

At what cost.......

Notanotherhousepost · 30/11/2023 12:40

in addition:

  1. I don't want another card
  2. I don't want it on my smart phone
  3. I don't want to give my data
  4. I don't want to buy an alternative but won't pay the higher price.

The most common reasons cited - are all choices made by the individual that is totally in their control.

Tesco are saying - these are our terms of trade accept it or go else where. Its a free country

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 12:44

Moonshine5 · 30/11/2023 12:38

At what cost.......

They know I buy cheap baked beans? And always buy the wine when it's buy 6 bottles and get 25% off?

I'm done for!

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 12:22

Also, Tesco are making huge profits are they???

I don't think so. This is an article from April - this year!

Tesco profits halve amid ‘incredibly tough year for customers’ | Tesco | The Guardian

Probably only 'busy' this week (as several people have claimed,) because it's nearly Christmas. The clubcard sheep will be there - along with vulnerable people who cannot get one/use one. Getting some Christmas stock in.

I would imagine if any Tesco stores are busy right now, it's because they are the only supermarket close by.

Edited

That just makes it even less likely they'll give up without a fight.

People need to stop whinging. Either use it or don’t.

If you don’t have a smartphone or haven’t bothered to learn how to use one or apps then this is the consequence of that decision.

What, to subsidise you?

Doesn't seem right. Surprised so many are happy to receive such a subsidy got through shady means tbh.

toodleloop · 30/11/2023 13:00

People don't care about data harvesting - that's the thing.

When the first rewards cards came out they measured frequency of buying, and discounted around those times - so, if buying Tampax they were effectively measuring your cycle in order to send vouchers at the same time. I don't think they do it for sanitary products anymore as it didn't sit well with some.

Like any kind of privacy: CCTV, Oyster cards (if people still use them) and rewards cards - some are ok with it and others just don't like it.

The fact you HAVE to give your data away to get the discount in Tesco is something that doesn't sit well with me, but they've worked it in such a way that not using the rewards is just not financially sensible.

Kets27 · 30/11/2023 13:02

I agree with those saying its not a big deal. This is likely to be the future whether we like it or not.
Knowing their shoppers helps supermarkets plan their discounts, the pricing, the deals, placement of products, age group that is using their stores..
Tesco is similar to Boots, M&S, Sainsbury’s and others giving targetted discounts to appeal to their shoppers.
If they know I am a regular customer who has gluten intolerance and my family likes organic milk and dark chocolate.. that works for me as they continue those deals and negotiate prices with suppliers.

Biggest reason to continue Tesco is their home delivery is brilliant and the hard working drivers are polite and always on time with the items in great condition.
Plus the points help towards our annual Amusement park, historical site visits at prices I dont get anywhere else.

Hopefully the point system will continue and not stop!

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 13:06

It is not simply targeted discounts though. It is inflated prices and then if you give your data you pay normal prices.

CrappyJob · 30/11/2023 13:06

OceanicBoundlessness · 30/11/2023 11:24

Well I thought that but they felt that the only way to sort it was to rescan everything.

Sounds like you were unfortunate to get someone new and inexperienced. It is definitely covered in the training, but there is a lot to remember on the customer service desk.

MassageForLife · 30/11/2023 13:09

'A few supermarkets do it, but Tesco is the worst'

Are they? I'm sure an article looked upthread suggested that Sainsburys did this for a third of offers but Tesco for a quarter?

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 13:09

Rincol · 30/11/2023 12:54

What, to subsidise you?

Doesn't seem right. Surprised so many are happy to receive such a subsidy got through shady means tbh.

That's it. So shady and devious. I really hope they get a fecking massive fine for it, like millions!

I am also facepalming at how some posters here still don't get it, and are being taken in and conned, and actually believing they are saving money with a clubcard.

YOU ARE NOT! The clubcard prices are 'normal.' the non-clubcard prices are over-inflated - massively. Why are people not getting this? Confused

I give up. Just can't get through to some people.

I hope the 'watchdog' throws the book at these feckers! But yeah, I give up trying to explain the obvious fucking facts to people on here - that they are just. NOT. getting. Hmm

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 13:10

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 13:06

I feel we're going round in circles......

I posted that the same club card priced item was cheaper than Morrisons, but no that wasn't good enough...

Because apparently everyone knows Morrisons are really expensive.... do they? I don't and I shop there.

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 13:15

@mantyzer · Today 13:06

Yeah exactly this. They desperately want peoples data. But why? Confused And WHY do they want - indeed need everyone to have a clubcard??? As as I said, don't anyone give me the 'to help the customer' line. They would not be conning people into believing they are saving money if they have a clubcard if that was true. (And having horrifically increased prices for those who refuse to comply.)

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 13:36

@Behindyouiam I have scrolled back 4 pages and can't find your comment. There was an early comment about tubs of quality street being £4.50 with a TESCO clubcard. They are cheaper than that at ALDI.

Notanotherhousepost · 30/11/2023 13:39

The argument that an item is cheaper elsewhere than the club card price is also rather stupid. For most things, some items are cheaper at Aldi or Sainsbury or joe blogs corner shop - it varies item to item.

Now, some people like to pay the lowest price and go to 10 different shops to achieve it.

Also tesco are saying is these are our prices.

Notanotherhousepost · 30/11/2023 13:39

There is no "normal price" for anything in the market - unless you want the state to start dictating what items should be sold for

BIossomtoes · 30/11/2023 13:43

Bloody hell, over investment or what @FreshWinterMorning? You’ve stopped shopping at Tesco, wtf do you care about what other people do? I’ll tell you something for nothing, if Tesco are fined millions it will be at their customers’ expense - huge corporates never lose.

That's FAB for the elderly and disabled. Such caring and understanding from you. I really hope you don't start getting dementia when you're old and get stuck and confused.

So, when it's your only shop in walking distance and you no longer drive? But getting out to the shop to buy food is one of your last bits of independence? Awesome.
