Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:18

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

@Aprilx I have loads of plastic cards from lots of shops. I have to carry a large purse bulging with them if I carry all of them. And if I have apps on my phone for every shop and restaurant that wants me to have one then it takes up too much memory and uses too much data.
So I simply do not shop at Tesco any more. Easy solution.

PrueRamsay · 30/11/2023 11:30

I just can’t see how it’s bullying.

You have a choice to sell your data and get the lower prices, or not.

It’s like saying you don’t want to pay the annual fee for a cash back credit card but are being bullied because you don’t get the cash back. You’re just paying Tesco by giving them additional data. It’s a choice.

That argument doesn’t hold water if the allegation is that these supermarkets artificially inflate prices outside of these deals.

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 11:37

@FreshWinterMorning it hasn't hit a raw nerve, as I said previously I shop primarily at Morrisons. But it is a very funny statement.

I think you're very triggered by club cards? Not sure why?

The point is loyalty schemes used to reward loyalty - ie, the bigger your spend, the bigger the rewards. That's fine and worked well for years.

Now they've decided to actively penalise people who don't have their loyalty card/app (and it's even worse if it has to be an app as people don't want them, not everyone has a smartphone and not everyone takes it absolutely everywhere).

Bonuses for having a loyalty card, yes

Penalties for not having one, no.

I suspect the CMA will agree with me.

Exactly this! It's a disgrace, and as has been said, it's discriminatory, as some people in society cannot handle clubcards, and some people SHOCKER don't have a smartphone for their stupid app!

Changing the subject slightly... My local town has had to start letting people over 70 book covid jabs and flu jabs over the counter at the doctors surgery, because most of them have no internet access, and don't know anyone who does, so they couldn't book their vaccines! And THIS is the same. It's like no-one gives a shit about the elderly, or the vulnerable.

And as you said, the whole clubcard system has gone to shit, because it's no longer about just saving 10p on a bottle of ketchup, or getting 20p off a box of Fairy washing powder. Now, they actively penalise people for NOT HAVING a storecard! I am glad they are looking into it now, because their behaviour is disgusting. A few supermarkets do it, but Tesco is the worst!

I agree with @enchantedsquirrelwood and I despair at people who can’t understand the difference.

I don’t have a club card because I live nowhere near a Tesco and do not do my shopping there. But if I travel to another city and it’s the closest supermarket when I need to buy something, why should I pay over the odds because I don’t have one - and this is what’s happening in some cases, despite what their signs and advertising might say.

I’m fine with not being rewarded, and not earning points/ vouchers. I’m not fine with paying extra for items because I have not signed up to a ‘loyalty’ card for a shop I rarely go to. If they were genuine price reductions it wouldn’t be so much of a problem, but I’ve seen items where all other shops (prices available online) are selling them for the lower ‘loyalty card holder’ price as standard.

100% this! ^

Also, like a previous poster, when I DID have a loyalty card - before all this clubcard-scam-shite. It was with Morrisons. I actually built up £40 in 'actual money.' They decided to dispense with the clubcard in 2021 I think it was, and went to claim my £40. For some reason, it had disappeared into the ether. They claimed I must have claimed it, even though my online account said it was still there.

After I had been told 'computer says no,' I went back home and the vouchers had gone! NIL balance!

Then a year later, they brought the fecking clubcard back! They have been trying to con me into getting it since, No f*ck off Morrisons! I am not getting it. They also have lower prices for clubcard members, but the difference is not as bad as Tescos. Oh no... I mean clubcard members have NORMAL prices of course. Non members are ripped off with higher prices.

Disgusting!* *Hmm

IncompleteSenten · 30/11/2023 11:48

Most shops do that though. That's why there are laws on how long an item must have been on sale at one price before it can be reduced and put on 'sale'. We all know they do it. DFS are buggers for it. We have to factor that ploy into our decision making.

Choices are
don't buy from any retailers that do this and hope you can still eat, drink, clothe yourself and furnish your house while you wait for enough people to join your boycott to make retailers lose enough money that they stop doing it.

Or start a campaign and try to get the government to ban sale prices and strictly control marketing, price of items and profits made on items.

Or look at prices and decide item by item whether you are willing and / or able to pay £X amount for Y item.

RudsyFarmer · 30/11/2023 11:35

That argument doesn’t hold water if the allegation is that these supermarkets artificially inflate prices outside of these deals.

Exactly this. As has been said, they never used to do this. It's just been this past year and a half to 2 years. As I said, why are these stores so DESPERATE for everyone to have a clubcard? Confused It's very odd. It's like they're desperate for people info/data.

It must be, because it sure ain't for the benefit of the customers. Like I said earlier, if they cared that much for the customers, they wouldn't be conning them into thinking they are saving money, by manipulating them into their naff clubcard!

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 11:51

Yeah but @IncompleteSenten this clubcard scam is already being investigated now.

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 11:52

I hope the number of people shopping at Tesco has gone way down.
I remember when Tesco was widely seen as the best supermarket. That has long gone.

ThePineapplePrincess · 30/11/2023 11:53

People need to stop whinging. Either use it or don’t.

If you don’t have a smartphone or haven’t bothered to learn how to use one or apps then this is the consequence of that decision.

Oh definitely. Been going downhill for about 7-8 years now. As I said, I have probably spent £50 there in 5 years. And this clubcard shite is the straw that broke the camel's back. I am glad they're being investigated.

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 12:02

@ThePineapplePrincess I have a smartphone. I do not want hundreds of apps for every shop and restaurant on there. Everyone wants you to use their app.

BIossomtoes · 30/11/2023 12:04

It doesn’t seem to be putting people off in our Tesco, it was rammed yesterday.

Makes you wonder why their profits are up so much .....

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 11:51

Yeah but @IncompleteSenten this clubcard scam is already being investigated now.

Honestly, I'd be very surprised if that leads to any significant changes.

These investigations are normally either done by people with no power to change things who come up with recommendations that are filed under B for bin or H for hahaha
or by people who have the power to change things but also have a vested interest in ensuring that any change is an illusion that won't affect their and their relatives shares and is simply designed to make people think they've made things fairer so they stfu about it.

Real, genuine and lasting change that benefits the general public is as rare as rocking horse shit.

And even if changes are made, companies will find a different solution.

In the case of groceries they'll remove the clubcard prices and we'll all pay more. They aren't going to do anything that reduces profits.

If they reduce all their prices for everyone instead of getting rid of discounts or finding another way to do discounts to replace the clubcards , I'll strip naked and do the flamenco in the fruit and veg aisle of Tesco.

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 12:14

@IncompleteSenten don't do it in the veg aisle, think of the 🍆! Grin

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 12:18

We can only hope @IncompleteSenten !

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 12:22

Also, Tesco are making huge profits are they???

I don't think so. This is an article from April - this year!

Tesco profits halve amid ‘incredibly tough year for customers’ | Tesco | The Guardian

Probably only 'busy' this week (as several people have claimed,) because it's nearly Christmas. The clubcard sheep will be there - along with vulnerable people who cannot get one/use one. Getting some Christmas stock in.

I would imagine if any Tesco stores are busy right now, it's because they are the only supermarket close by.

Probably by the people without clubcards paying the inflated prices.

I hope the CMA throws the book at them.

LOL. I hope they do too. Absolutely shameful how they do this to people! And as I said, I also question the Tesco are making huge profits claim! Didn't take me long to find an article that said their profits are dropping! Not shocked tbh!

And referred to the first half, ie the six months after April.

Notanotherhousepost · 30/11/2023 12:26

My mother is 80, has never been the sharpest tack in the box and is even worse now she's 80. Even she can manage to have a bloody club card.

I really don't see the problem on discrimination grounds.

Data harvesting? Well thats individual choice.
