Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

The point is loyalty schemes used to reward loyalty - ie, the bigger your spend, the bigger the rewards. That's fine and worked well for years.

Now they've decided to actively penalise people who don't have their loyalty card/app (and it's even worse if it has to be an app as people don't want them, not everyone has a smartphone and not everyone takes it absolutely everywhere).

Bonuses for having a loyalty card, yes

Penalties for not having one, no.

I suspect the CMA will agree with me.

I agree with this and I despair at people who can’t understand the difference.

I don’t have a club card because I live nowhere near a Tesco and do not do my shopping there. But if I travel to another city and it’s the closest supermarket when I need to buy something, why should I pay over the odds because I don’t have one - and this is what’s happening in some cases, despite what their signs and advertising might say.

I’m fine with not being rewarded, and not earning points/ vouchers. I’m not fine with paying extra for items because I have not signed up to a ‘loyalty’ card for a shop I rarely go to. If they were genuine price reductions it wouldn’t be so much of a problem, but I’ve seen items where all other shops (prices available online) are selling them for the lower ‘loyalty card holder’ price as standard.

So Morrisons don't do a two tier system? Seem to inflate their prices and then reduce and still more than tescos

I'm not quite sure what your point is, Morrisons is nearly always more expensive than Tesco and the price of soft drinks like Coke and Pepsi bounces up and down every week, theres never any consistency ime

Addicted2Kale · 30/11/2023 09:53

You are very unreasonable. Given the choice and other items you are likely much happier to over pay for (coffee, high end brands, shared ownership housing, car leases, tobbacco e.t.c), it's a complete non issue.

MassageForLife · 30/11/2023 10:00

I'm struggling to think of any product that someone would need, where there wouldn't be an alternative non-clubcard offer item available. Even in the case of allergies and coeliac disease, there are usually a few options as far as 'needs' go.

Things that there are only one option for in my local store are usually fairly unusual things - like rose harissa paste. I think the one thing that I've only seen one version of that could be closed as a need is lactose-free cheese (there are plenty of vegan 'cheeses' though) - but I don't think I've ever seen that on a clubcard offer.

The fruit and veg offers seem to be genuine, other than the permanent 3 for 2 on overpriced prepacked pre-prepared items. If people choose to buy a tiny 80g pack of green beans for £1.25 instead of 220g for 85p, well that's on them. A 3 for 2 still doesn't make it worth it.

But you’re not being penalised, bullied or controlled. It’s entirely up to you if you set foot in Tesco.

There are at least six other supermarket chains in the UK so just go to one of those. Waitrose doesn’t have two tier pricing, neither does Aldi or Lidl.

Tesco is the only supermarket within walking distance for my Mum. She's given up driving due to her age, and one of the reasons she bought the apartment she lives in was due to being close to M&S and Tescos. M&S has closed down, leaving her just Tescos. She doesn't have a choice of a dozen supermarkets. It's also really important to her to keep this part of her independence. Not everyone has access to many different supermarkets. I doubt it will be long before someone will need to shop with her, but at the moment she can manage. She also just sucks up the fact she is paying, sometimes substantially, more for items. But when you're elderly and confused, it can be yet one more thing to add to the burden.

I've accepted I will never get my online clubcard working, and refuse to carry an extra card which I would use once a month or so. Even if Tesco could work out how to send me a card. I keep getting a "computer says no" response from customer service!

It's a pain - tomorrow for example I need to pop into tescos for something I can't get elsewhere, but will then go the opposite direction to get the rest of the shopping I need.

annahay · 30/11/2023 10:17

@Pipistrellus the Tesco by me has WiFi. Worth a look if there's no reception.

annahay · 30/11/2023 10:19

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 31/10/2023 10:49

Google Wallet/G Pay/Apple Pay does the same.

And, knowing Google, that's an extra tier to be harvesting and selling your data!

That will throw up a warning on their system, the other shopper looks like they are using someone else's card to pay for their bill, unless the first customer pays in cash.

? They don't check the name on the loyalty card against the name on the payment card!

I don't think you can use the same card at the same time for two transactions, can you? Presumably, if you stop a customer in Tesco who has a Clubcard, they're expecting to use it themselves.

Also, people are so scared of scams these days, they may well think that you're somehow trying to do this to them - even though I don't think it would be possible to do with just a Clubcard.

I suppose, if it's somewhere where your purchases generate extra discount vouchers, you could skew their profile. Ask an elderly person if you can borrow their card, thinking they might appreciate the extra points - then they end up getting vouchers for nappies and baby food instead of the ones for coffee and bread that they might actually want to use!

I like the Scan & Shop/Shop & Go or whatever they call it, but if I need to grab anything for work, for which I need a separate receipt, I have to put it aside and go to a robot till afterwards to pay for it separately.

I often use my Clubcard in two separate transactions one after the other.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/10/2023 09:49

I agree. I think the price should be the price, to all shoppers equally. It's just another layer of bullshit we have to deal with.

Agree same price for everyone.

Viviennemary · 30/11/2023 10:26

It's not just Tescos though. Co-op and Sainsbury's do the same. Not sure about others.

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 10:29

@VisionsOfSplendour my point is that Tescos are giving a discount to club card customers.

I shop primarily at Morrison and find them cheaper than Tesco and Sainsbury's on the whole. However, Clubcard and nectar pricing may negate that.

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 10:44

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 02:26

@FreshWinterMorning the fact is that if you shop in Tesco or Sainsbury's then you'll pay more than me.

You can choose not to shop there at your inconvenience, that's your choice.

Judging by the profits you're in the minority though.

I hope you mean the collective 'you' (as in me.) Because I don't shop at Tesco, OR Sainsburys. Both over-priced - and Tesco is the worst for the clubcard shite. I only pop into Tesco occasionally (maybe once a month,) for a bottle of milk, or a loaf of bread, or some chewing gum. Literally don't even need a basket. I have not spent more than £50 in there in 5 years ... Tesco has rude staff (IME.) They are cold and hostile at the checkout, and the dot.com workers knock you flying when they're getting stuff for online shoppers.

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 10:46

JadeandGreen · 30/11/2023 00:00

Exactly! Can't believe people fall for this rubbish!

It's disgusting isn't it? And as you say, I can't believe people fall for it.

Moonshine5 · 30/11/2023 10:54

Clubcards use your data, it's been proven by independent bodies that clubcard type schemes are not that beneficial.

Where is the research on this? I'd be interested to view it.

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 11:04

@FreshWinterMorning of course all Tesco staff are rude as well 🙄! It's part of the interview process I'm sure!

What a ridiculous statement, particularly for someone who barely enters the shop.

So what? The data’s about my groceries, it’s hardly intimate and personal. Every shop that has your email address also has your data. Seriously, who cares?

Moonshine5 · 30/11/2023 11:14

@Behindyouiam There was a discussion on the radio (yesterday or the day before in the morning), it was either LBC or BBC 5live. Essentially the expert said the financial gain was secondary but it was lucrative to these companies to research consumer shopping habits which were worth their weight in gold. I will switch my brain on and try to remember which radio station.

Moonshine5 · 30/11/2023 11:16

@BIossomtoes
Some people do mind the invasion of privacy. Tesco's and all supermarkets sell much more than groceries.

'There have been a few times where me and the checkout person forgot about scanning it, then I had to go to customer services where they reluctantly rescanned all of my shopping. It was too expensive not to'

I can see why they would be reluctant to rescan everything - your receipt details how much you are due back and what points you are due, so there is no need to rescan everything to get that information.

Well I thought that but they felt that the only way to sort it was to rescan everything.

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 11:28

@Moonshine5 was it a phone in discussion?

Of course it's not a ridiculous statement. IME Tesco staff ARE rude and aloof. And yeah I don't go there much anymore - as I said, and this is one of the reasons why! (As well as their manipulative 2-tier clubcard shite!)

It's not that hard to understand ... really! I don't go there much, but I can still say the staff are rude, because IMO they are, and I DID used to go more often!!! (And they were rude then!) I am entitled to post about my own experience, even if you know people who work at Tesco, and what I am saying has hit a raw nerve.

Aprilx · 30/11/2023 11:30

mikado1 · 31/10/2023 09:21

She said if you don't have it handy, it causes a palaver! My local Tesco is very good, the staff just get another card and scan it so you still get the cheaper price.

But how easy is it to ensure it is handy. Put the plastic card in your purse. Or put an e version in your phone wallet.

PrueRamsay · 30/11/2023 11:30

I just can’t see how it’s bullying.

You have a choice to sell your data and get the lower prices, or not.

It’s like saying you don’t want to pay the annual fee for a cash back credit card but are being bullied because you don’t get the cash back. You’re just paying Tesco by giving them additional data. It’s a choice.

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 11:30

One of the funniest things I've read on MN, Tesco staff are different to other retail staff 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

This beats the all cyclists are idiots and all dog owners are unhygienic!
