Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:18

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

*I had a lovely cashier at the till ask the customer behind me to use their club card so I could have the discounts after I said I didn’t have mine with me - it was really lovely of her to do that"

I work for Tesco and did that once for a customer and the customer I asked gave me abuse for it " you can't do that it's fraud" etc etc " I'm going to report you" so I don't do it now unfortunately

Edited

Of course it's not fraud. What nonsense.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 16:07

anyone I’ve heard talk about it think a lot of their prices are outrageous without the club card! I’ve had the odd “real” reduction but for the most part the club card price is the same as the normal price in Dunnes ime.

Tesco, overall, is cheaper than Dunnes. However, you definitely lose on the range of options, and I found that Click & Collect became more irritating as there were too many items they didn't have, so I'd have to go to Dunnes anyway.

Dunnes' range has improved, I spend the extra to get James Whelan meat for example, as I do think it's worth it.

I shop in various Tescos around Dublin / Kildare (work, kids' match locations as well as my local Tesco) but only for top-up shops + specific items & that's when I'll avail of the club card offer. Recently Nutella for example was €2.25, €3.85 in Dunnes. That's clearly a non-essential item 😀 but it's the kind of purchase I'll make using the Tesco offer & won't in Dunnes.

I shop with such efficiency & to a budget in Dunnes that I know exact prices. Similar to Tesco & everywhere else, the price jumps from week to week are incredible. Like € in the difference, not cent.

Dunnes works for me as I can manage the voucher system to my advantage - but it really just makes my shop affordable, not actually significantly cheaper

They all do it,Sainsburys, Boots, Morrisons, Waitrose...

They couldn't make it easier, I have a small card on my keyring.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 31/10/2023 16:13

It's got nothing to do with Tesco that someone "doesn't believe in charity" and "prides themselves" on paying the higher price so refuses to get a club card. When it is BOGOF does she leave one on the shelf in order to refuse this charity?

I think this is unfair. People of her generation grew up in very different circumstances from those of us who are middle-aged; and we in turn have grown up in very different circumstances from those of young adults.

When you've been used to a straightforward system of buying things from shops from a young age, and then they introduce more and more complications and gimmicks - any of which could be designed to hoodwink you, rip you off or persuade you to overspend - you have to see how a lot of very elderly people would lose trust with that shop.

Even the carrying plastic cards thing would make some think of credit cards - i.e. an expensive way to make you spend more and borrow to do so - and they would naturally be deterred. This isn't helped by the fact that Tesco and others do also offer debit/credit cards that are combined with the Clubcard.

I know that a lot of older people do manage to adapt and move with the times - whether willingly embracing it or reluctantly accepting it - but I think it's horrible how many government and corporate decisions are made that simply ignore the existence of elderly people and, too all appearances, look like somebody has officially decided that they should just hurry up and die.

So, so nasty; how will they feel when they are old and younger people are running the world in a way that alienates and excludes them?

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 31/10/2023 16:20

Personally don't have an issue with the couple of quid difference but realise the hardship it can cause others but the one I really refused was Go Outdoors. I went looking for sleeping bags and the price difference was crazy £125 without card £35 with or something equally bizarre.

I like GO, but they are quite an oddity.

Whereas the likes of Tesco do display 'normal' prices for non-Clubcard-holders, GO don't really expect that anybody will buy from them without one.

Maybe their rationale is that, as it isn't the kind of place that you instinctively go on a regular basis (like a supermarket for your food), they like to keep in your thoughts by charging you that £5 'membership fee' and then spending that money on sending out marketing materials to your home.

If you're buying something that costs more than a fiver over the membership card price, they will actively urge you to sign up for a card then and there - which sometimes does cause a long queue at the till. At least Tesco heavily publicise their Clubcard and the benefits of it throughout the store, but always leave it up to you to capitulate decide to sign up for one.

The £10 ketchup comment was hyperbole 🙄

Jeannie88 · 31/10/2023 16:36

A totally pointless initiative which makes us think we are getting a bargain. Just why?

Because it works. People sign up and thereafter show a preference for tesco when shopping, boosting their profits and pleasing shareholders.

bridgetreilly · 31/10/2023 19:20

Or is it just general outrage that a company is charging what it wants for the stuff they sell?

No, that it is charging two different prices to customers for no good reason.

bridgetreilly · 31/10/2023 19:21

Of course it's not fraud. What nonsense.

It is, though.

madeinmanc · 31/10/2023 19:22

mugboat · 31/10/2023 19:55

Such an interesting thread... I'm amazed at how many posters don't mind having their shop adding an extra layer of complication... it's annoying having multiple loyalty cards- I use a few different shops on a regular basis. It's annoying that it's not easy to scan these cards at the self-service checkouts - 50% of the time they don't work and I have to get someone to help me.

Interesting that people don't mind the supermarkets harvesting their data.

Supermarkets know your name, date of birth, address and what you buy. They sell your data to other companies and make assumptions about your income.

I didn't like the hassle of having a purse full of cards but now I feel like I have to so I'm not ripped off.

mugboat · 31/10/2023 19:58

Pret have started doing this too- they raised the price of all of their food and you get the "normal" (still expensive!) prices if you subscribe to their club.... which you have to pay for!

I have stopped buying food there now

you must have a big bunch of keys!

madeinmanc · 31/10/2023 20:09

How do they know my date of birth? I haven't given it to them 😕

UnbeatenMum · 31/10/2023 09:24

I hate it too. I don't really shop in Tesco and don't carry my purse around so I was desperately trying to get the app to download on holiday after realising my shopping was going to cost way more than it should. Actually put stuff back because I was in a poor signal area and couldn't get it to download.

Screenshot the cards in your phone wallet and keep them in a folder on the phone. No hassle downloading it then.

GreenAppleCrumble · 31/10/2023 21:03

Again, feel like my Tesco is totally different… I scan my card with zero problems every single time.

How many Clubcard offers are you people finding in your Tesco anyway? It is bizarre that people are so enraged by this minor issue.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 31/10/2023 21:05

Are you sure you haven't? When you signed up?

They usually require your exact date of birth, supposedly to make sure you're over 18, when they could very easily just have a box to tick to confirm that you're over 18, if that was their true intention.

Me too!

I have my apple wallet on my watch and just scan the QR code on my watch screen it takes a couple of seconds.

To encourage people to sign up for the card. Once people gene the card, the supermarket hopes the customer will keep returning to their store as they're invested (points/promotional prices etc.).

You may not have used those specific brands, but it's pretty certain that everyone uses washing detergent of some description; they're just trying to encourage people to try the particular brand they are plugging and continue using it after the promotion has ended.

Ultimately it's up to the customer what they buy, but you can't blame a company for using marketing strategies to increase their profits!

Nah. Wink They can try and use whatever 'marketing strategies' they like. I'm not signing up. And the fact someone else may use Persil so they will send the voucher for it to me - who uses ARIEL - makes absolutely zero sense. Confused I am not going to buy Persil because they gave me a 5p voucher off. Why would I, when I use Ariel? Utterly pointless.

I won't be having any more clubcards/storecards, and I think they are a data harvesting load of shite. People are mugs if they think they are getting anything out of them. It's only the store that benefits. Last time I had a storecard was about ten years ago. I'll never have another one, no matter how they try to bully me by ramping prices up if I don't have one. I'll just shop elsewhere.

As I said, you're not paying less by having a storecard, you just pay more if you DON'T having one. And for this reason, I shall continue to buy most of my shopping from Aldi or Lidl.

CyberCritical · 31/10/2023 22:41

Lidl have a loyalty card already, you get discount coupons in the app for specific products either a % off or £1/50p off, you also get regular £5 off a £25 shop coupons and can earn points towards more discounts.

Aldi has a loyalty card in Beta testing so @SweetBirdsong if you won't shop at any shop that has a loyalty card then you will soon be out of places to shop.

@CyberCritical

I know Lidl have some kind of loyalty app, but they don't force you to have it by charging exorbitant prices if you don't have it. I imagine Aldi will be the same. Plus, Lidl and Aldi prices are much lower than the 'big supermarkets' anyway.

The issue is - as the OP said, the disgustingly high prices that Tesco charge if you don't have their loyalty card. Plenty of people are pissed off with this. Not just me. As I said, Morrisons are starting to get as bad, and I think someone said Sainsburys is too. They will stop doing it though when people shop elsewhere.

And there are plenty of other places to shop apart from Aldi and Lidl anyway. Even if they were stupid enough to follow Tesco - which they wouldn't do. I'm not going to run out of places to shop! 😂

This simply isn’t true! I’ve checked quite a range of products, and standard prices across the main supermarkets are very similar (discounting Waitrose, obviously- only a fool would pay those prices!). Eg 6x cans of Heinz beans - £5.25 in Tesco and Sainsburys. (Actually £5.50 in Asda 😱). But £4.75 with Nectar card in Sainsburys. How is that not cheaper?!
