Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

I work in retail, I've run loyalty schemes, I get the principle. I don't particularly care about my data being shared, or the faff at the tills, and I quite like the little bonuses like some actual discounts (not just the 'real price vs inflated price' trick) and building up Nectar points etc. But I feel deeply uncomfortable that all the supermarkets are implementing two tiered pricing. It feels discriminatory towards anyone who is unable to use/understand/access the system - some elderly, under 18s, anyone with a learning disability or condition which makes it difficult for them to use it. A mild example is my brother who has ADHD and simply doesn't remember to use things like loyalty cards so frequently ends up paying more than he should (to his partner's endless frustration). Obviously it's the business's prerogative and I understand that companies have to encourage loyalty and retention, and this is the arena they're all currently competing in. It just feels a bit off.

How do they know my date of birth? I haven't given it to them

Are you sure you haven't? When you signed up?

They usually require your exact date of birth, supposedly to make sure you're over 18, when they could very easily just have a box to tick to confirm that you're over 18, if that was their true intention.

They only know your date of birth if you actually give them your date of birth. I surely can't be the only person who provides them with something that is similar but isn't my actual DOB.

I thought everyone did this.

Fizbosshoes · 31/10/2023 23:10

. It's annoying that it's not easy to scan these cards at the self-service checkouts - 50% of the time they don't work and I have to get someone to help me.

I've never had a problem scanning my club card at self check outs but I don't think I've ever managed to scan it successfully at the pay at pump petrol stations.

Leavemetoit · 31/10/2023 23:14

Co op also do this now... Member pricing. Annoying

Hankunamatata · 31/10/2023 23:16

I have the fob on my keys so no hassle. Sainsburys nectar on the other hand, having to load the deals and chexk what's on offer. That's a pita

At the end of the day it’s a business about making money

is it not enough that they make it by selling us groceries rather than by selling our data?

No, I give them my correct dob in case they need it to verify my account or something. I'd deffo forgot a fake one.

Again, feel like my Tesco is totally different… I scan my card with zero problems every single time.

How many Clubcard offers are you people finding in your Tesco anyway? It is bizarre that people are so enraged by this minor issue.

well that's absolutely wonderful for you but I assure you I'm not making it up. 2 nearest shops to me- Lidl and Tesco. I never ever use the Lidl card as it does not scan and there's usually tonnes of people waiting behind me glaring. I only buy a few bits from there so not worth it.

At Tesco, it's a Tesco Express so everything is overpriced anyway. I go for convenience...however it used to be the case that there would be special offers on certain items but now you can only get these on clubcard purchases. Things like biscuits, desserts, pizzas.... there may be an offer on a brand of pizza but only if I have the card. I have no choice than to log in, find the card on the.app (as I don't go there daily I get logged out and forget password)... then the QR code will not scan at the till. God knows why but I'm there for ages dancing around trying to make it work.

What stings is that these offers used to be available without the card. It's galling that the shops are attaching these conditions to the discount.

It annoys me because dc can pop into the little Tesco on the way home from school and buy a chocolate bar etc (which I’m happy for them to do and is good for their independence) but they don’t have a club card so end up paying extra and unable to get the offers.

Not every item has two tier pricing, in fact it’s a very small percentage of what they sell if you look on the shelves. Surely your children can buy something that is the same price for everyone?

But can’t you just keep the card in your bag/purse? It’s one of very few cards I always have on me. No need for an app or a login or a QR code 🤷‍♀️

My purse is already overflowing with millions of clubcards, library cards, gym cards etc.

I honestly lose them too and have got stressed rifling through my purse looking as ppl behind me glare.

Also you're missing the point, why should I? 2 years ago I didn't need to. Now the Tesco overlords have deemed that only members of their data collection club are worthy of discounted items.

Onethingatatime23 · 01/11/2023 05:36

Mine hasn't been overflowing since I put everything on GPay, years ago now. I need very few physical cards or much cash and my purse is 1/3 the size of the ones I used to need.

Onethingatatime23 · 01/11/2023 05:41

The one exception is Barclays who only woke up about GPay six months ago. Ocean going arrogant wankers.

MarathonBarbie · 01/11/2023 06:33

Really can’t get worked up about this. Data is valuable, up to everyone to decide if it’s more valuable to them (so keep it private and deal with some products being more expensive/shop elsewhere) or let Tesco have it and take the discounts. Businesses like Tesco are there to make money.

Fair enough. Again, I must just live in a slightly different world.

Only cards in my purse that I regularly use are my bank card and my Tesco Clubcard! My library card and National Trust card are in there too, tucked away in a different section. I keep my gym card, credit card and nectar card in my phone case (because I only use those on certain days when I don’t want to take my purse). I have no other loyalty cards that I use regularly- occasionally use the Superdrug one but hardly ever. Tesco is the only one that regularly yields discounts (and yes, they are discounts if I’m paying 50p less for beans than the standard price across four different supermarkets!).

Wehadabetamax · 01/11/2023 07:48

For those of you struggling to scan the Tesco clubcard app QR code, if you swipe left on the QR code you get a barcode that is much easier to scan.

Fahbeep · 01/11/2023 08:09

So, the consensus, apart from those being paid by Tesco HQ as social media influencers, is that it's a bag for life full of crap. Poor offers, poor value, poor tech...

A way to rip off the vulnerable.

And they don't care if it alienated 50% of the customer base, because the other 50% have fallen for it and enjoy being rinsed (so shareholder profits maintained while market share shrinks),

😂

Conveniently ignored the specific data I provided about actual discounts available on Clubcard 😂

Seems a bit like cutting off your nose to spite your face to me, but you carry on!

That's the mn consensus haha. It's absolutely not a real life consensus
Not everyone with a different opinion is working for Tesco HQ. 🤣

PuppyMonkey · 01/11/2023 08:44

I don’t go to Tesco much but I’ve got an old old key ring thing with my club card barcode on, which I keep on my car keys, hence I always have that with me and get the cheapo deal.

Yes they are. They are being paid in fake Club Card discounts...

I'm just winding people up now.

I've posted on MN about DV, divorce, separation, raising kids with SEN, careers- all sorts.

And the one that gets traction is a moan about Tesco Clubcard!!! 😂

Nobody forces you through Tesco doors, they are top of their game and have been for years, you never hear anyone applaud or congratulate them, just constant moaning and whinging. Customers act like spoilt entitled brats when it comes to food shopping.

Are you the Tesco CEO 😂. You're doing a great job! Shame about the Club Card scandal though.

@GreenAppleCrumble

9 out 10 MN users hate Club Card, what about them numbers?

[Note: I pulled them from my rear end to support my case.]
