Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

@Elphame if planning permission for any new store, extension or other change could be refused on the grounds of two-tier pricing, the practice would end quickly.

Fizbosshoes · 31/10/2023 13:13

I'm probably the supermarkets best friend, I've had a tesco club card for years but the nearest supermarket is a pretty rubbish sainsburys.
Now that sainsburys had 2 prices I'm considering
getting a nectar card.
DD is going to uni next year and I've told her to sign up for a boots card, tesco club card and nectar card when she's 18. (And possibly others if her nearest supermarket is a different one)
All shops have tricks and ploys to persuade you to buy things you don't need, or spend more, but not everyone has time/means to shop around or go to somewhere different

*I had a lovely cashier at the till ask the customer behind me to use their club card so I could have the discounts after I said I didn’t have mine with me - it was really lovely of her to do that"

I work for Tesco and did that once for a customer and the customer I asked gave me abuse for it " you can't do that it's fraud" etc etc " I'm going to report you" so I don't do it now unfortunately

Oganesson118 · 31/10/2023 13:17

I like it, it's no hardship for me to scan a card at the end of the shop if it saves me money, I keep most things like this on my phone anyway. I've noticed Boots now do something similar with the advantage card.

I hate this so much. I won’t shop at Tesco or Sainsbury’s now unless I have to.

My mum is nearly 90, has shopped at Tesco for decades and is uncomfortable going anywhere else.

The twats at Tesco HQ are essentially scamming her, and hundreds of others like her.

She won’t entertain the idea of having a Tesco card, because she thinks it must in some way be like a credit card and she has “never wanted one of those”. She also “doesn’t want charity” and prides herself in being “able to pay” the higher pricing and “leaving the discounted ones for the people who need them”.

So Tesco HQ bastards have got her believing that a bottle of tomato ketchup really costs nearly a tenner these days. She is spending a fortune she doesn’t have because of their underhand tactics.

Total wankpuffins!

This too. My mum moved to live within walking distance of the town and the tesco there. She is now late 80's and very confused. She has previously used a club card no problem and loved spending her points on pizza express vouchers!! But covid earlier this year has left her very easily confused and the whole club card thing is just that bit too much for her - especially as we have banned her from just handing her purse over to the checkout staff which she has done before! So, she pays more than us youngsters ( ;) ) because the confusion distresses her.

Deathbyfluffy · 31/10/2023 13:23

Ugh, I can't stand this.
I can't put my finger on why, but it just feels really underhand.
My family (including wife!) love Tesco and none of them can understand why I have such an issue with underhand tactics like this.

Newthingsahead · 31/10/2023 13:26

Someone put on Twitter the other day that Tesco are basically bullying people into having their clubcard at this point, and they're right

sorry but the 1.65 in that photo isn't correct at all.
Someone in one shop as tried to move the label to hide the real clubcard price so they can say " well it says 1.65 on the shelf "

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 31/10/2023 13:39

People keep referring to the 'elderly and vulnerable with no smartphone or internet access' but you don't need either to look at a price and hand over your physical discount card.

I was responding to PP who said that you could easily compare between supermarkets. Of course, you can see the different price options in one shop once you’ve gone there.

I definitely don't want any supermarket monitoring my spending etc.

Why not? How do you think it negatively affects you?

Wait until they fully bring in the social credit system. If you’re buying what the government consider to be ‘too many’ bad foods, you might not want to make it easier for them to punish you or ban you from buying any more.

This is where having a good grasp of numeracy comes in handy. I'm often found stood in front of a shelf with a furrowed brow trying to do some mental calculation. 😆Shouldn't have to be like that, I agree.

Yes, definitely; but it’s really harsh on those who struggle with maths or have learning difficulties or cognitive impairment. I once looked at some toilet rolls and they had a tiny little ‘13p per 100 shts’ on the price label – which I must admit did make me look again more closely Grin

Why can’t you just take her to a cheaper supermarket instead that don’t require club cards?

The club card saves me literally hundreds of pounds and I think if people don’t like it then they should just shop elsewhere.

So you really think that elderly, disabled and other vulnerable people should be completely excluded from a major food shop - maybe the only one in their area - because of an arbitrary marketing decision?

Georgeandzippyzoo · 31/10/2023 13:41

madeinmanc · 31/10/2023 09:27

They're not discounts, it's been shown that the prices are just what they were before these cards were introduced and the other prices have just been inflated to make it appear like the card gives a discount.

@madeinmanc

That might be true for some items but there are definitely bargains compared to other supermarkets. I've bought gifts and cleaning stuff last week which is pounds cheaper than sainsburys and still cheaper than asda.

SoupDragon · 31/10/2023 13:42

SweetBirdsong · 31/10/2023 11:36

Tesco are a disgrace! Charging higher prices (sometimes stupidly higher prices,) for something, if you don't have their clubcard.

Morrisons do it too, but their prices without a storecard aren't quite as bad - it's still about 15-20% higher without one though. I do actually do some shopping at Morrisons, but hell will freeze over before I get a Morrisons 'More Card.' Not only do I not want my data harvested, but also, I don't appreciated being coerced and bullied into getting their storecard.

Tesco are far worse. Charging a little more if you don't have a storecard is fine (like 5%) but some things in TESCO, are 50% - 60% more, and some have an even higher % than that added on. A few things are double - or more than double, without a storecard. Nasty. Hmm And for this reason, I rarely go in there. I spend about £70 a year in Tesco.

As a few posters have said, you don't pay LESS if you have a storecard, you pay much more if you don't have one. At one time, supermarkets would let you collect points for every purchase, and then when you'd got so many, you got vouchers for money off.

Now, they are practicing underhand tactics, and making you pay more - a LOT more - if you don't have a clubcard.

Why are they all so desperate for people to have one? Confused Stores trying to force you into clubcards is one of the reasons I do 75%-80% of my shopping at Aldi and Lidl.

Someone put on Twitter the other day that Tesco are basically bullying people into having their clubcard at this point, and they're right.

As a few posters have said, you don't pay LESS if you have a storecard, you pay much more if you don't have one.

So you are claiming that the clubcard prices in the photo you posted are the usual prices?

kitsuneghost · 31/10/2023 13:50

In general it is cheaper with the Clubcard, not more expensive without
If toothpaste is £3 with Clubcard and £5 without then the price is £5 when no Clubcard deals are on.

I know this as I wait for the Clubcard deals on many items and buy in bulk

GreenAppleCrumble · 31/10/2023 13:59

This thread baffles me. I can only imagine my Tesco must be different 🤷‍♀️

The Clubcard offers are usually on one item within a range. That’s it. So if you choose one of the many, many other versions of that item, you are not in any way affected.

For example, the best Clubcard price I’ve had recently was on a branded jar of coffee. As we know, all jars of coffee are insanely expensive now. I actually checked online, and this brand of coffee was retailing at £5.50 in all of the major supermarkets. But Clubcard price was £2.95. So I bought it.

Those who didn’t have a Clubcard would have paid the regular price that was the same as Asda, Sainsburys etc. Alternatively, people could just buy one of the many, many brands uninvolved in the offer.

No bullying. Just choice. There is some top quality MN drama on this thread!

Snowdayplease · 31/10/2023 14:20

I often use a Tesco express, which also has the two tier system, prices are dearer anyway than I the big stores, and a more limited range.

Snowdayplease · 31/10/2023 14:21

And I still don't understand why some of the items I buy have gone up by 100% rather than whatever inflation is.
my salary certainly hasn't

Because I don’t really feel like she should lose her autonomy just because Tesco are bastards.

She likes taking herself off to Tesco. She’s shopped there for decades. But they are evil gits for taking advantage of people like her who feel that way.

ACynicalDad · 31/10/2023 14:37

I wonder how much of it is discounts anyway, I suspect that many times the full price goes up a week before the deal starts and you are back to the original price.

SoupDragon · 31/10/2023 14:52

So Tesco HQ bastards have got her believing that a bottle of tomato ketchup really costs nearly a tenner these days

what bottle of ketchup costs nearly £10?

Get them a spare card. They aren't meant to have one officially, but my teen uses one and doesn't have any issues - especially at the self-service checkouts

mine too, ds signed up for one in the name of a super hero

Coffeerum · 31/10/2023 15:27

The 'two tier pricing' comments are ridiculous though. There has always been an element of that, staff discount, family discount, blue light discount, money off vouchers in some newspapers but not others etc.
Why do people take such an issue with an app but not the rest of these things?

Coffeerum · 31/10/2023 15:31

@fishfingersandchipsagain She likes taking herself off to Tesco. She’s shopped there for decades. But they are evil gits for taking advantage of people like her who feel that way.

It's got nothing to do with Tesco that someone "doesn't believe in charity" and "prides themselves" on paying the higher price so refuses to get a club card. When it is BOGOF does she leave one on the shelf in order to refuse this charity?

Because combined with them jacking up prices across the board, it is perceived not as a discount for having a card but a financial penalty for not having one.

MechyMagic · 31/10/2023 15:53

Personally don't have an issue with the couple of quid difference but realise the hardship it can cause others but the one I really refused was Go Outdoors. I went looking for sleeping bags and the price difference was crazy £125 without card £35 with or something equally bizarre.

Ohmylovejune · 31/10/2023 16:04

My Dad lives 100 miles away from me. He's 83 and no longer drives. He can walk to Tesco. It's the only shop close enough where he can carry stuff home.

He does have a club card but it's not fair to assume older people have the luxury of choice.
