Do I win the prize for the worst freebie ever on sparks card?

OchonAgusOchonOh · 30/10/2023 19:54

Just opened the M&S app and saw the little 1 beside Sparks.

Oh goodie. Will it be free chocolate or percy pigs? Or even 20% off women's clothes?

Nope. It was:

Drum roll.

A free paper bag!!!! Be still my beating heart, I can't contain my excitement.

So, aibu in thinking I have just received the worst ever freebie or can you beat that?

I completed a survey they sent the other day basically saying I'd had high hopes when they relaunched Sparks but it's still pants! Can't understand what benefit you get by swiping it at all! I have had the occasional freebie that's been useful (percy pigs and the like) but usually it's 20% off asparagus or something equally useless! But a free paper bag is particularly shite! And has made me realise that I've been thieving..... because they're paper I assumed they were free and just used them.... 😳oops..... everywhere else paper bags are free aren't they? Am I wrong?

Paper bags aren't free, they probably should be given the reason all the big supermarkets introduced the fee is to counter plastic use but they aren't

Daffodi1970 · 01/11/2023 11:40

I feel your pain, I got one of them too, it didn’t last long on the journey home in the rain 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤣

ifIwerenotanandroid · 01/11/2023 11:54

I've only had very sensible offers, like 10% off chocolate, meat, frozen items, etc. I save £2-£5 every time I shop, using those. I think the only freebie they ever gave me was the chance to get one item from the 'sneezed-on' range as I think of it (uncovered pastries in the bakery section). I didn't bother.

But they are in some places, like Primark for example. I can't think of a time I've paid for a paper bag and M&S are the only place I can think of where they're self service so they're generally handed to me, like in Primark. Where else do you pay for paper bags?

I don’t suppose I’m the only one who just CBA to bother with my Sparks card.

Ditto the John Lewis one. The benefits of both have little or zero interest for me.
Cards with points, OTOH, like Nectar or Boots - I do use those.

To be honest, the main benefit if the Sparks card is threads like this slagging off the ludicrous offers.

I've never paid for a paper bag. Admittedly, most supermarkets only provide paper for wine but they're still free where I live.

No offers for me. As usual. It really is the most rubbish 'reward' card yet I keep diligently swiping it, brimming with hope. Congratulations on your paper bag. I think they are 40p. Remember when they first started charging for plastic bags, 5p to protect the environment. How come they're charging 40p for paper now. Scammers.

In the Republic of Ireland, paper bags are free.
We pay for bags for life and for plastic bags, but paper bags are most definitely free.

We introduced the plastic bag tax levy long before the UK even considered doing it. We however never introduced a fee for paper bags as they could always be recycled or reused so they could go into our green bins once we're done with them.

Whenever I travel to Northern Ireland, I have to remember to take a bag into the likes of Next or M&S clothing/homewares as they don't give you a paper bag free. I also remember when I was in the Titanic Exhibition and they charged me for the bag that I was getting my purchases in which was a paper bag. After this length of time, I think charging for paper bags is entirely a money making exercise and should be stopped.

Itisadifficulttime · 01/11/2023 12:41

Just checked mine.
Free bag of percy pigs! Or ¿anything? Colin the caterpillar.
Expires today.

Wouldn't have been surprised if i got a free paper bag😂.. as i laughed so hard when i read the OP. Typical M&S! Not the best of loyalty schemes.

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 01/11/2023 14:50

I lost interest when my local M&S closed 😪

lindyloo57 · 01/11/2023 15:35

Just picked up my free bag of cookies today.

10% off juice. Whoop bloody whoop.

Hardly enticing me in to the store when I live 20 minute drive.

These new paper bags are rubbish anyway. Too shallow and thin. I stocked up on some M&S stuff last week before getting on a train and was v disappointed when I got to the checkout to discover how weedy and inadequate the bag was. I actually had to put shopping back as it was too heavy.

Not just disappointment, M&S disappointment . . . 😭😜

MelAndTim · 02/11/2023 06:40

Agree the bags are rubbish, I bought one yesterday.

New offers for me today, buy bra & matching pants and get a second pair of pants free. Feel a bit judged by that tbh 😂, has someone been looking ?? Matching does not happen in my life.

Also, 20% of Christmas trees, there’s a brass tree skirt in the Christmas tree section that I’m going to order. Been meaning to buy one for at least ten years!

TheGoldenGhouls · 02/11/2023 06:58

@Emotionalsupportviper It’s just happened again. Spent over £60 on children’s clothes yesterday and today find myself with a 20% off voucher! Back to M&S I go to return and rebuy some clothes.

Hardly good for the planet, inducing people to go back and forth to return and re-buy. (Which is what I would do, too.)

Then they have the nerve to hand out paper bags to protect the environment.

Hypocrites. 😠

OchonAgusOchonOh · 30/10/2023 20:00

It is definitely the shitest of all loyalty schemes.

Oh, isn't it just? No points, just offers on shit you don't want. Waste of time.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 02/11/2023 09:49

They have obviously been reading this thread. Free cookies for me today. I can collect on Saturday and put them in my paper bag. I will do so carefully so I don't slice my hand open.

I also have 15% off clothes, 20% off Christmas trees (we use a real one), 20% off a snuggle blanket (I will investigate), 20% off electric blankets and up to 60% off festive European breaks!!!!!

The clothes and the hooded blanket (student dc) are potenially useful but I only have 6 days to use on all of them bar the cookies and holiday.

Yes 💯 you WIN ,how lucky you must feel 😂

MelAndTim · 02/11/2023 10:09

Well, the Christmas tree offer is a bit shite.

When you click on shop the offer it takes you to a page that includes a metal tree skirt, great I thought, I’ll have on of those (£49.50 w/o sparks). When you check out not only does the offer 20% not come off total price but it is a delivery only item @ £3.95, rather than click and collect for free.

So, I am not buying the tree skirt I thought I was 😑.
