First we had troll posts, then massive influx of posters from the US (frankly I found it annoying negotiating the different reference points) and now all these ridiculous AI threads which seem to consist of long winded posts about non-problems.

I’ve been on and off MN for years but does anyone else feel it really has had it’s day.

OP posts:

Their chocolate is awful.

And their wine

ClairDeLaLune · 29/10/2023 09:25

Are you a bot OP? 😜

Agree though - the trolls and AI are so annoying. Americans are welcome though!

Theres still good stuff on here, but sometimes more difficult to find.

ColleenDonaghy · 29/10/2023 09:25

There is no way a post giving out about an "influx" of any other nationality would be allowed to stand.

NewYorkCheesecakeASAP · 29/10/2023 09:27

Also seems some people reply to the posts as if having a go at someone they wish they could have a go at in real life. e.g they are angry at their husband/friend/MIL/grandchild's parent, so when they see someone post anything vaguely similar to the situation, they let rip into that person.

MorvernBlack · 29/10/2023 09:27

Nothing wrong with Americans or their wine.
Hate the anti-Americanism on MN, probably from people who have never set foot there.

NewYorkCheesecakeASAP · 29/10/2023 09:30

everyone should be welcome on this site. It should just be about not being a dick!

It's nowhere near as light-hearted as it was when I first joined in 2014.

Nowhere is as light hearted as we dared to be pre covid. All hope was extinguished alongside that fucking virus.

Itsnotchristmasyet · 29/10/2023 09:30

I have no issues with Americans being on here.

I think it can be difficult giving specific advice if you don’t live in the same country but certain topics like relationships or raising children is similar worldwide.

Everyone should be welcome here.

I have noticed more and more bullying.
I’m hoping it’s just because it’s half term.

There was a thread about someone nearly having a car accident.
They were in the right and the other driver was in the wrong but still some MNers were falling over themselves to try and blame and have a go at the OP.

Its definitely not very supportive on here.

Bedazzling · 29/10/2023 09:32

There is nothing wrong with Americans but MN is dominated by UK folk so people tend to give advice that’s UK based so I guess a quick heads up if people are in another country is useful. I mean Americans who dodge child maintenance can be imprisoned, that does not happen in the UK.

The Reddit stuff can do one as far as I’m concerned.

My pet hate is when posters assume everyone lives in England and has the slightest clue what age a year 4 child is. Where I'm from that would be 16 year old.

Dahlia444 · 29/10/2023 09:33

Having been hovering here for years I agree at the missing humour. I used to laugh and laugh till I cried at some threads. Thinking about it I can't remember when I last did that. These days I usually promise myself I won't come back because of the toxic nature of some of the replies e.g. there's one in holidays today which OP is asking to be removed that was like aibu and a big agreement of 'you're so dumb OP'. Awful.

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 29/10/2023 09:33

How can you tell if a post is AI? Sorry for being dim.

Personally been here since about 2005 and it is sooooo snipey. Posters can't say anything nowadays without someone turning on them. I just click off if a post goes in that vein.

Reallybadidea · 29/10/2023 09:36

EightOfHearts · 29/10/2023 09:23

I don't understand the AI thing either? Why do people want traffic and clicks? Who is it that's using the AI?

I also don't get how people can tell when it's a troll? There was a thread I was really enjoying and it got removed, I was clueless.

This. Everyone knows that Twitter/X have bots for political purposes/revenue generation but I don't see how getting a chat bot to start a thread about an imaginary MIL problem benefits anybody.

I do think that there is a typical MN style of posting and that anyone who posts in a 'different' style gets jumped on because they're seen as being an outsider.

Georgieporgie29 · 29/10/2023 09:37

I thought you were going to say that the amount of nasty people on here has increased because that’s what I see, some people are really horrible/rude, there doesn’t seem to be the same support as there used to be.

EasternStandard · 29/10/2023 09:39

I thought this would be about the general vibe

It has changed a bit although I still prefer over all that in crowd royalty stuff back then

itsmyp4rty · 29/10/2023 09:41

donquixotedelamancha · 29/10/2023 09:23

Their chocolate is awful.

Agreed. Sadly since it was bought out ours is too.

Rattusn · 29/10/2023 09:41

The rise of anti-Semitic and terrorist sympathisers here, I find very worrying. The narrative is that anti-Semitism is an acceptable form of racism for many people, which is very worrying.

But also the Reddit terms and AITA.

paddyclampofthethirdkind · 29/10/2023 09:45

Not sure why you care about what country people come from?!

I’m rubbish at spotting trolls! I do think some of the replies people get are incredibly nasty though - that’d be my main grumble!

Nearly all the posts were "yes op is right, but is it better to be right or dead?"

Sure there were some pointing out that a large bus on a slip road should not have been a surprise, but overall the bus should have been seen

FlorenceBoot · 29/10/2023 09:46

FlorenceBoot · 29/10/2023 09:04

Very long OPs. Lots and lots of irrelevant detail in the OP - opposite of drip feeding.

Quoting myself cos I forgot to say this is one way of spotting a bot/troll.

100% agree with this

AutumnCrow · 29/10/2023 09:47

There's a chance that some posters are using Chat GPT to 'help' them write their posts.

Unfortunately what that means is instead of producing something genuine and snappy in one of two paragraphs for their OP, they cut-and-paste for our delight a bland, over-long screed of about a dozen paragraphs that is devoid of humour and real human tone.

They are a very tedious development.

Other posters use Chat GPT to produce similar OPs as a wind up, and I've seen posters admit to using Chat GPT mid-thread to help their argument.
