WTF has happened to Mumsnet?

First we had troll posts, then massive influx of posters from the US (frankly I found it annoying negotiating the different reference points) and now all these ridiculous AI threads which seem to consist of long winded posts about non-problems.

I’ve been on and off MN for years but does anyone else feel it really has had it’s day.

OP posts:
Needhelp101 · 29/10/2023 09:49

The same threads get recycled all the time. I've commented on this before.

Americans are most welcome!

I scroll through Active Convos and struggle to find anything of interest.

Lots of bots.

Irritated by the "Me (f32) and partner (m35)" posts - get back to Reddit!

Yes I (32F 😂) fucking HATE that as well.

EasternStandard · 29/10/2023 09:44

I thought this would be the op

The fact that posters from the US, with different language, is more of a concern, just shows how little care there is about the rampant anti-Semitism here. Mnhq don't seem interested either.

soddingspiderseason · 29/10/2023 09:51

I find Mumsnet a much safer place than other social media to be honest. Most people are respectful, although not all, and when I've reported posts that cross the line, MNHQ deal with it swiftly. I also still find it a source of real support for people in crisis and I think that's rare and invaluable. Yes there are some annoying and daft posts, but I just scroll oast then

BarbaraofSeville · 29/10/2023 09:51

I agree about the inclusion of 32F. The first few times I saw it, I wondered why people were including their bra sizes in posts about something else entirely.

What's wrong with Americans?

Nothing, but I suppose it can sometimes get a bit tedious pointing out that most of us are in the U.K., and this or that (rules, customs, traditions) are different from theirs.

wideawakeinthemiddleofthenightagain · 29/10/2023 09:53

I've been here for 15 yrs and threads like this crop up regularly. Yes, it has changed but so has the world as a whole and so have I (being 15yrs older for one thing). 15yrs ago there was much less awareness of mental health and many fewer children and scarcely any adult women diagnosed with autism or ADHD. There were also many fewer trolls or keyboard warriors. This does change things. I think it was more supportive but people weren't asking for support through a lens of anxiety, ADHD, autism and so on.
I still come here most days, love the fact that I can choose which boards to visit rather than being fed them by an algorithm and have learned a lot about all sorts of things and got insights into lives which are very different to mine. I have had some invaluable support, from when I was pregnant with DC1, throughout their infancies, through various house projects and when DC1 was showing the signs of disordered eating last year. I have also learned that to read a lot of things on here with a pinch of salt. Not only is it very easy to hide behind a screen but people are only presenting (consciously or unconsciously) one set of facts in a post and it is that post which is getting replies. There might be a lot more to the situation.

It does need an edit function on the phone app though!

It’s not as funny or warm as it was 10/15 years ago but I think it’s indicative of society. So many bitter people just waiting to knock other people down and pick them apart.

Occasionally I get a tiny glimpse of “classic mumsnet” humour, but it’s rare these days.

And their cheese - Velveeta?! Ugh!

My pet hate is when posters assume everyone lives in England and has the slightest clue what age a year 4 child is. Where I'm from that would be 16 year old.
MN is Uk- based, it was started in Kentish Town (London NW5). So it's starting point, origins and presumably most members are in the UK. If someone from Scotland says "it's different here", fair enough but I for one couldn't enjoy it as much if we had to start off by assuming that each poster could be from an entirely different country. Part of finding MN relaxing and comforting (which I do) is not having to explain we are in the UK rather than the other way round.
I've been on MN since 2003. Yes it's changed but I still love it

Oblomov23 · 29/10/2023 09:56

The Chinese thread titles are a bit wierd. That's been going on for a while now.

It's a just a reflection of the wider world ?

KimberleyClark · 29/10/2023 09:57

Americans are very welcome here as far as I am concerned. There are many things I like about the country and people. The more diverse spread of opinions we have here the better.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 29/10/2023 09:58

YankeeDad · 29/10/2023 09:07

yeah, what's wrong with Americans?

[dons helmet and body armour. But no gun, because I am not that kind of American.]

The lack of kettles!

Agree

ManAboutTown · 29/10/2023 10:00

This feeling isn't limited to MN - the posters on Guido Fawkes for example have the same sentiment

WeCanCallItEven · 29/10/2023 10:00

I've been on and off Mumsnet for about fourteen years and two things you can rely on popping up with predictable regularity are posts bemoaning the loss of the 'good old days' when MN was so much better, and of course posts expressing horror that Americans exist.

The UK does not equal England.

I live in NI and grew up in Ireland, I haven't the foggiest idea about the English school system. In most cases, just using the child's age is fine.

And their wine

Tbf, like the Austrians, Germans and New Zealanders, they don’t export their best wine. Presumably there’s no need to, when there’s a market for it in the US.

ididntthough · 29/10/2023 10:03

Agree with both. Have been off MN for a long holiday and just so shocked how slow moving AIBU has been since I got back. Suspect there are far fewer active users now.
@WeCanCallItEven good name!

Loubelle70 · 29/10/2023 10:04

I was a lurker for a while before posting. Ive noticed a shift in attitudes. Not Americans, i cant see the problem with anyone. Inclusivity and all. However, its the willingness with some to ask questions with the aim to disparage OP...even with a straight forward question from OP. Some like to object for objections sake. Theres some cruel people on here. Also men obviously posing as women to disparage women...the incels and bitter divorcees.

Princessandthepea0 · 29/10/2023 10:04

The anti Americanism on here is allowed and validated by mods. There is a lot of antisemitism too.

I think part of the issue is as the cohort of posters has aged then the site hasn’t caught up. People who have all day to talk about the ageist younger generations. You can’t dare say how a family may struggle now in comparison. Your thread is taken over by calls of ageism.

People who do well in life are generally hated and told to shut up and pay more tax.

A decent conversation only seems possible in the evenings. When you read a thread of day posting - it’s like a bad episode of day time tv.

Nearly all the posts were "yes op is right, but is it better to be right or dead?"

Sure there were some pointing out that a large bus on a slip road should not have been a surprise, but overall the bus should have been seen

A bus almost crashed into her because it came flying down the slip road out of no where and didn’t bother checking before speeding out.

The only thing she could do was break, which she did.

The police involved also said OP was 100% in the right and bus driver was wrong.

Any poster trying to say she should have done X, Y or Z were just being complete dicks because she had explained it all.
