To think this card is inappropriate?

Saw this in a supermarket the other day. I find it very distasteful and almost upsetting. Surely if we're condemning sexual violence, we're condemning all sexual violence? Rape jokes are not acceptable, so why is a card joking about serious sexual assault OK?

To think this card is inappropriate?

It's just a joke but I see your point. If role's were reversed there would be uproar.

Autiebibliophile · 27/10/2023 21:00

It's awful and should not be accepted as normal

Do you know many men who've had a hoover shoved up their anus? I don't think it's the norm, is it??!

I think it's mildly amusing. It's not instructions for how to stick your vacuum up your man's hole in 3 easy steps.

Put away the smelling salts.

Seriously, where is the humour on any level with this card?

I despair.

I found it very funny.

Best reply 😂

OP - unclench. It's just a joke

The card isn’t literal. It’s metaphorical.

The man criticised the woman’s hoovering ability and she told him to stick the hoover up his arse.

The joke would not read so well if it said “he said she missed a bit so she told him to stick the hoover up his arse and then he did and had to go to hospital and have it removed”

Is there an epidemic problem of men having items shoved up their arses by women they’ve offended without consent?

Is there an epidemic of sexist behaviour of men towards women (particular in instances like this?).

It’s a joke because it retaliates to the actual expectation and belittlement of women by men. That part (the criticising) happens everywhere. The retaliation of shoving a hoover up a man’s arse happens precisely nowhere.

It’s completely tasteless and not funny, but why is the part that doesn’t actually happen is real life the issue with you? Why aren’t you criticising the fact that jokes are still being made about women expected to do all the housework?

Because the "joke" was not about the man belittling the woman. I care greatly about sexism and unfair gender roles. That's not incompatible with thinking that we should stop joking about men being assaulted sexually though.

The scenario you describe is a metaphor, yes. The scenario on the card is not.

It's a play on the metaphor.

MyDogSmellsTerrible · 27/10/2023 21:51

"What's the relevance of that to this thread?"

The relevance is that there are actual real life atrocities going on right now.

And you're getting upset over a bloody card!!!

What’s to say the man didn’t stick the hoover up his own arse when instructed to do by his wife?

CantFindTheBeat · 27/10/2023 21:51

I do get your point, OP.

I'm not sure that particular card would have stood out to me, but it's definitely not funny, and there is a line that needs to be drawn.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/10/2023 21:51

I found it very funny.

That's so disturbing.

Apart from whether you find it offensive or not, what's the joke? What's the part we are meant to find funny? It's just a statement. There's nothing witty or clever about it.

Went out of your way to take a photo and post it on the internet...

I had my phone in my pocket and was looking for a card when I saw this. I posted about it two days later, took all of three minutes. I was hardly bending over backwards to achieve this...

Do you think a man who had something else put up his arse without consent would see it that way.

Oh please!! FFS!! It's not real! It didn't happen!!!

Good job you weren't bending over backwards. Who knows what you might have found...

Well that escalated.

So a card about sexual assault on a woman would also be funny because it 'didn't happen'?

@Hexandthecity

I agree wholeheartedly with your posts.

Isn’t humour subjective? We all find different things funny & that’s ok. I think Ricky Gervais is the funniest guy on earth but others don’t. There is a joke on the card that you might not find funny, others might.

I’ve already said I don’t personally find it funny. That doesn’t mean it’s not funny though.

The joke is that it’s relatable for many people of both genders.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/10/2023 21:56

@StarDolphins

Yes, humour is subjective.

But even if I don't find something funny myself, I can understand the joke.

There's no joke here.

It's two statements. There's nothing to find funny.

Unless you're suggesting that simply stating that a man was sexually assaulted is funny? 🤔

If roles were reversed on this card & the man had missed a bit then the reaction wouldn’t been the same I would think?

Because, it’s a card. It’s not a true life event.
