Serious question: who the fuck is ‘the patriarchy’? Who is it that’s forcing us to objectify ourselves and dress a certain way?

As I point out upthread, most fashion designers, clothes makers, make-up artists, beauty entrepreneurs, aesthetic doctors, beauty & fashion marketing executives, fashion magazine editors are women.

It’s women who are enabling women to objectify themselves. Why? Because most women derive joy and satisfaction from fashion and beauty, and experimenting with their looks.

(But I guess ALL the women who dominate these industries must be suffering from ‘internalised misogyny’, right? 😂)

It isn’t true that those industries are dominated by women- where are you getting your data from?

I totally agree. A quick google of the 100 wealthiest entities in the world will quickly reveal the men and their companies who dictate our reality - see who are their CEOs and their major shareholders.

LVMH right up there in terms of leading the world of fashion.

Catsmere · 27/10/2023 00:06

Had to look them up. I’m very glad to say I’ve never seen them before. You might as well paint them red and wear a sign saying “Baboon in estrus”.

JMSA · 27/10/2023 00:10

I've seen some absolute peaches in these leggings! Fair play to those who can carry it off. It wouldn't be me.

bronkie · 27/10/2023 01:34

Unfortunately for most people the effect is not that flattering.

EtiennePalmiere · 27/10/2023 01:49

I've seen them but didn't know sometimes they're padded? Hahaha

HazardLights · 27/10/2023 05:37

I wonder if the padding gets all twisted around sometimes, like when you’ve got a bra with separate sewed in pads, and they get all turned inside out in the wash. That would be a good look.

CaptainJackSparrow85 · 27/10/2023 06:28

Women are free to wear what they want and other people are free to think it looks shit.

Grapewrath · 27/10/2023 07:48

I think they can look great- loads of women wear them in the gym and have gym bums so they are quite flattering imo. Even if they aren’t, who care what other people wear.
This thread is very Mumsnet. Only on here would something like leggings be seen as a ‘class divide’ 🤣

TimeForACider · 27/10/2023 07:51

I’ve got a big enough arse as it is thanks very much.

Edited

Clothing is often quite class indicative though. There’s nothing new about that and it’s not an especially MN idea.

CanIPetThatDawg · 25/10/2023 22:35

I have an urge to pick them from the wearer's crack. But I resist because I don't want to end up on a register.

😁

It's not the actual decider though. I doubt Princess Beatrice would ever wear these, but if she did, it wouldn't actually stop her from being royal. Similarly, plenty of working class people today change their fortunes and wear more expensive clothes. But if MN is anything to go by, this just sets them even lower, because money can't buy class and they're gauche and nouveau riche etc etc. And as before, no such criticism when Princess Beatrice does it.

Stop! I just snorted orange squash down my nostrils right onto my phone screen 🤣

This needed pictures! LOL! 😉

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 27/10/2023 10:24

So I reflected on these creations after my (sweaty) run this am and doing yoga after.

All that excess fabric when sweaty would be rank and so unhygienic Envy

But even if it were true that fashion and beauty were dominated by women, that wouldn't mean that we don't live in a patriarchy, which like all systems of power co-opts enforcers from within the dominated group.

Much easier to let the oppressed police themselves.

LadyWithLapdog · 27/10/2023 13:00

The patriarchy doesn’t need pointing out on a site such as MN, does it? Sadly it does.

Ah come on, unless that’s a friend of yours, it’s not nice to take pictures of people and put them on the internet with snarky comments.

bronkie · 27/10/2023 13:14

@AngryBirdsNoMore where did I say "I took this photo today"?

PotOfViolas · 27/10/2023 17:57

You can get scrunch butt dresses too

Comeonbarbiebrianharvey · 27/10/2023 18:08

There's a time and a place for them sure, like a gym or exercising or something.

I hate them on nursery/school runs, especially skin coloured or almost see through, it's awkward I don't want people's arses in the queue, I'm terrified my kids will comment on their bums!

They could have just come from the gym yes but it's too revealing, imagine if men wore something similar, willy scrunch.

Oh for the love of god make it stop LOL

Do they have scrunch cleavage at the front?

bombastix · 27/10/2023 19:40

You are being unfair. The dress is for a classy, formal event. 7.49 is a bargain too

LavaGuava · 27/10/2023 19:49

How about these ‘classy’ leggings! Perfect for the school run! 😂
