Who drives?

Purely out of curiosity...

I was sat in the car with my DD at the services, watching the world go by, when she asked me: "Why is it always the man who drives?".

I looked, and she was right - every car with both men and women in it, a man was at the wheel! I didn't really know what to say to her...

So, when you're in a car with a member of the opposite sex, who's driving and why?

YABU - the woman
YANBU - the man

I don't care who drives, as long as it's not me. I don't enjoy it at all 😐

DH always drives. He loves driving. I'm happy to sit there and be driven around.

DH drives. He grew up rural-ish and was driving regularly as soon as it was legal. I grew up in London and never drove until my 30s post kids. Unsurprisingly he is a better and more confident driver than me, also gets places quicker as I will sit waiting till there is a nice big gap etc.

Sometimes I make myself drive as it’s good for me but I don’t like it whereas he genuinely doesn’t mind at all.

PurpleBugz · 25/10/2023 19:45

I'm a control freak and I will always drive and it will be my car. If it's his car I'd let him drive only if I want a drink otherwise I would be taking my own car.

I once had an ex who insist Ed on driving. Used to be an argument most trips. I let him drive once and he hit a deer and did huge damage to my car I then had to pay to fix. I saw the deer before him and I'm convinced I would have not hit it. I stand my ground now.

Men are generally better drivers for longer trips, so not surprised of this observation at motorway services. I think for the popping into town type trips women will drive!

What a load of rubbish!

I drove 12 hours last weekend (in 2 x 6 hour sessions) and my husband was the passenger all the way!

HundredMilesAnHour · 25/10/2023 22:31

When it's my car, I drive. You'd have to prise the keys out of my cold dead hands before I'd give them up.😂

KookyAndSpooky · 25/10/2023 22:32

I drive more often than DH as he works from home. As I drive more, I often leave the choice of weekend driving up to DH. It's probably 70/30 in his favour for short journeys. For long journeys we split it 50/50.

WTF?!!! I swear when I woke up this morning it was the 21st century.

Dh always drives, he gets travel sick as a passenger, but is fine when driving. I'm a nervous driver so perfectly happy to let him drive.

DappledThings · 25/10/2023 23:04

A few people have mentioned "his car" and "my car". Does everyone think of them like that? We have two cars, they are both just our cars. We both have a set of keys each that includes a front door key and a key for each car and I've never thought of either of them as his or mine.

Is that unusual?

BlueEyedPeanut · 25/10/2023 23:15

"My car" has the kiddies' car seats, general chaos, and is set up for my needs. "His car" is spotless, has business insurance for his job, and is set up for his long legs. We don't mess with each other's settings.

In our case, it’s because his is manual, mine automatic. Have a manual license but really prefer automatic. Plus mine’s hybrid, his is diesel (he bought it because the govt. said it was the clean thing to do) so I prefer to use it.

It always used to me 39 years of driving now I have decided I cba. Haven't driven for over 3 years

MrsAvocet · 25/10/2023 23:22

My car was chosen by me, to meet my needs and my tastes and paid for with my money. DH's every day car is a company car but he also has a money pit classic that he bought and funds himself and which I have zero interest in. It is most definitely "his car".

Sonolanona · 25/10/2023 23:23

I drive my car, he drives his... usually.
His van... I prefer him to drive as I hate parking it (and he's an HGV driver and can get any vehicle parked with a 2 inch gap back and front.. it's impressive_)

BUT on a long drive I prefer to drive. He drives as though he's in his lorry... slow!!!

My arriving soon, tiny sports car... I might allow him in it occasionally Grin

Lifeinlists · 25/10/2023 23:36

I've never really understood the 'my car' 'his car' thing (apart from cars which are owned by your employer) but I know it's very common. We gave up our second car a year ago but we just referred to them by type / make before that and used the one which was more suitable for our needs each journey.
Obviously we're weird.

There does seem to be a bit of a stereotype of 'her car' being smaller than 'his car' from purely anecdotal observation.

My car has loads of my things in it (phone charger, bags, snacks, stuff to return to shops, stuff to give to people, car park permit etc).

I do drive DH’s car but it requires slightly more thought and planning, as I have to think of what I need to transfer.

BlueEyedPeanut · 25/10/2023 23:44

Smaller cars are easier to park 😀I think a lot of women prefer convenience over image. I don't have the time or the inclination to hunt around for a large parking space.

oscarmike · 25/10/2023 23:50

We share. The car is his (I don’t have one) but we live in London so rarely need to drive other than to go to Wales (or some other longish weekend trip). We tend to do 2-2.5 hours each, which works for both of us

DixonD · 25/10/2023 23:57

My husband always drives, unless he’s had a drink. He complains about my driving so I refuse to drive.

GlitterGlobe30 · 26/10/2023 00:01

I don't think your sample was a bit of an anomaly at all OP.

Men take the wheel much more than women. I'm yet to meet a man who doesn't think women are terrible at driving!

MrsHughesPinny · 26/10/2023 00:10

My car is my car because I chose it and I pay for it. It’s the car I drive to work every day. His is likewise.

We drive the same make and model of car, so they're our cars rather than his and mine.
We're very rarely in the car together apart from long journeys, which we split between us.

UndercoverCop · 26/10/2023 00:18

We mainly take turns on bigger trips, I'm happier to drive long distances though, but DH is better in the dark and wet, we live in a suburban area so it's fine here, but his parents live very rurally and my eyes are not the best when it's both dark and raining, so when we visit I often drive there and DH drives home in the evening. Overall I do more of the driving than he does.

Zingy123 · 26/10/2023 00:35

I always drive. I am more experienced and have been driving longer.
