Who drives?

Purely out of curiosity...

I was sat in the car with my DD at the services, watching the world go by, when she asked me: "Why is it always the man who drives?".

I looked, and she was right - every car with both men and women in it, a man was at the wheel! I didn't really know what to say to her...

So, when you're in a car with a member of the opposite sex, who's driving and why?

YABU - the woman
YANBU - the man

Unless there’s a specific reason I’m not driving, like he’s picking me up when I’ve had a drink for example then I drive, the car is mine anyway and his van’s passenger seat kills my back.

If i'm in a car and a man is driving its a taxi.

DH 99% of the time. I do a lot of driving for work so it gives me a break.

I've never really understood the 'my car' 'his car' thing (apart from cars which are owned by your employer) but I know it's very common. We gave up our second car a year ago but we just referred to them by type / make before that and used the one which was more suitable for our needs each journey.
Obviously we're weird.

There does seem to be a bit of a stereotype of 'her car' being smaller than 'his car' from purely anecdotal observation.

I bought my car and pay for it's up keep and DP bought his and pays for it's upkeep. We both have small cars as we don't have any need for a big one.

@DixonD "My husband always drives, unless he’s had a drink. He complains about my driving so I refuse to drive."

That would make me insist on driving all the time....

I drive. My car is nicer and I don't like being a passenger anyway.

My partner can't drive (he did start learning but has since developed nerve issues that can cause his legs/back to spasm and doesn't feel safe), so I do all the driving. I've driven my dad around, and even driven my brothers car so he could be a passenger and take in the scenery (I was taking him out to snowdonia and he hadn't been before)

It's quite normal to me, my dad didn't learn to drive until his 40s so throughout childhood my mum was the driver. Even now if they are going out together they will usually take my mum's car with her driving.

Even if my partner could drive I wouldn't want it to be 'his job', I love driving and much prefer driving to being a passenger

Men are generally better drivers for longer trips, so not surprised of this observation at motorway services. I think for the popping into town type trips women will drive!

WTAF?? Just being goady I presume?

Generally DH drives, as I find driving boring and he enjoys driving and gets bored as a passenger. I tend to be designated driver when we go out for dinner etc as I rarely drink.
