Would be such a shame not to continue the discussion.

Another example - local authorities lose millions in central government funding (mine lost £120m in the last 10 years) and cut all non-statutory services which costs more in the long run - https://www.probonoeconomics.com/the-well-worn-path-childrens-services-spending-2010-11-to-2021-22

There are multiple examples.

Like @Notonthestairs if being concerned about my country makes me overinvested - well, meh!

@LakieLady so true!

"A good chunk of the sane Tories got chucked out because they didn't agree with Brexit and a good chunk of the remaining sane ones are stepping down. There's no-one in the parliamentary party now that could hold a candle to the likes of Grieve, Gauke and Greening, let alone a Hurd, a Heseltine or a Clarke. "

I would add Stewart to that list.

We'd benefit from careful, thoughtful stewardship.

I’d like to know background to some of the stuff on the FWR threads in particular

You could always google it. 🤷‍♀️

It really got to you didn’t it. That I didn’t waste my time.

I’m sure it’ll pass eventually.

Nope. You’re not getting away with it though.

Better tread carefully @BIossomtoes or you'll have to deal with an @EasternStandard ckassic "I'm not going to engage with you anymore" tantrum.

So much upset over a link.

Tough day all round.

I get it of course (not) but it’s a bit.. over invested.

Also, Tory skinfintary ends up costing us all so, so much more in the long term. Example, don't build council housing, end up spending a fortune on HB for private LL and hotel accommodation for homeless people (to the point that some councils are on the edge of bankruptcy) . This is leaving aside the human misery it causes.

Another example, our (Tory) County Council is proposing to close 2 of our public recycling centres. The hypocrisy of the (Tory) councillor proposing this, hearing the (Tory) chair complain they didn't want to do it but it was due to (Tory) government funding cuts and hearing a different (Tory) councillor say that she wished the (Tory) MPs locally would listen. Apart from the fact there will be an inevitable further increase in fly tipping which has got worse since they reduced the tip hours and removed funding for any Police or other enforcement, and the clean up from that will be more expensive than running the tip, don't any of these Tories ever talk to each other? Why aren't they embarrassed and ashamed to be in a party that is starving us of funds?

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/10/2023 16:49

I'm looking forward to the Covid investigation next week. And Boris Johnson's new show on GBN. He's my favourite Tory ExPM.Grin

Which party says that it's going to make women use unisex toilets? Evidence?

We get unisex toilets not because of any trans issues/rights but because they are simply cheaper to build and maintain.... and who controls council funding and has slashed it to the bone?

Ever wondered by your CT bill keeps going skyward yet services are reducing?

In the absence of a law requiring dedicated toilets then one size fits all is the cheapest possible.

Mind you the rather embarrassingly over-provisioned Pentagon may not be the best way to go about the solution.

Alexandra2001 · 27/10/2023 17:13

@LakieLady I ve rarely respected any Tory politician, look at all the give away privatisations? council funding cuts? NHS cuts? education? transport? water treatment? the way they closed the mines....

These issues didn't just occur in the last 13 years, they weren't dealt with by Blair but have their origins in Thatchers Govt.

Supported by people like Heseltine, Grieve, Clarke, Gauk, Stewart.... only good thing they ve ever done is backing the UK to stay in the EU.

The big difference with todays Tories, isn't so much on policy but on incompetence, possible corruption, certainly of values.

verdantverdure · 27/10/2023 17:49

Well we can all look forward to that!

LlynTegid · 27/10/2023 18:38

@TooBigForMyBoots some guarantees about what the former Prime Minister will stay on his show have allegedly been given.

Knowing his track record for keeping promises I doubt a bookmaker would offer odds they will be kept.

verdantverdure · 27/10/2023 20:29

I imagine U.K. beauty companies who used to export to the massive market 22 miles over the water aren't planning to vote Tory:

@Princessandthepea0 I don't think the most prolific poster on this thread is a Labour supporter Grin

Throwhandsupintheair · 27/10/2023 21:17

LakieLady · 27/10/2023 15:51

They only need to get their core support out if they really, really want to win, and I'm not sure they do. I think everything in the UK is so fucked that they might not want the aggravation of trying to put it right.

Obvs, none of the prominent MPs who've declared that they're standing down want any part in trying to sort out the mess they've made of things, but I'm not convinced any of them are really up for it. There's certainly no evidence of them doing anything positive to get things working properly.

There are a few of the complete nutters, like Fabricant and Anderson, might relish the prospect but they're the last people who should be trusted to do it, on account of them being two pence short of a shilling.

A good chunk of the sane Tories got chucked out because they didn't agree with Brexit and a good chunk of the remaining sane ones are stepping down. There's no-one in the parliamentary party now that could hold a candle to the likes of Grieve, Gauke and Greening, let alone a Hurd, a Heseltine or a Clarke.

There was a time when I respected many Tory MPs, despite being a lifelong Labour voter. I can't think of any that I really respect now.

Fully agree. Although I wasn’t fully on the same page as many of the old guard Tories on a few things, I did respect them.

I would say I’m socially liberal and economically centre right. I’m an unashamed Blairite but I also would have voted for Clarke, Heseltine or Guake.

The current Tory cabinet are an abomination of traditional Conservative values. They are the political equivalent of feeding a gremlin after midnight. I have less than zero respect for any of them. None of them would be fit to acknowledge if I saw them in public, let alone show an ounce of respect. I feel my nose automatically turn up just thinking of their names.

None of them are employable post the next general election, that’s why those with even an ounce of intelligence are jumping ship now to create distance. I fully expect Braverman to use her maiden name to try and find work after this.

Notonthestairs · 27/10/2023 21:33

Almost wholly in agreement with you @Throwhandsupintheair.

But I think Braverman has the next leadership election almost in the bag. Of course Mordaunt and Badenoch will put up a good fight but I suspect at least one would fold if offered the right position and that might be enough to swing it for Braverman.

Of course it's at least a year away- so who knows!

BIossomtoes · 27/10/2023 21:57

I think speculation about their next leader is pointless until after the election. Given the number of seats they’re predicted to lose, they’re going to have a pitifully small pool to choose from. And would any of them actually want it? I suppose Braverman’s demented enough to want to give it a go but I reckon that would be the final nail in the Tory coffin.

Throwhandsupintheair · 27/10/2023 22:09

If Braverman became their next leader, I wouldn’t even need to stick a fork in it to know they’re done.

You do know that googling it isn't going to lead necessarily to the posts you were talking about? Google doesn't take everyone to the same results. So asking you for your evidence is fair - googling it won't necessarily lead anyone to the exact bit of evidence you are depending on and who knows if it even exists if you can't point to it
