Would be such a shame not to continue the discussion.

@verdantverdure probably Marcus fysh (who is a vile obnoxious human being I’ve sadly spent time with) but options are minimal to the point I don’t even know who would stand. We used to have david laws and he was excellent, and paddy ashdown before that. I don’t think Labour will get in so we’re hoping for a decent Lib Dem (not looking good right now).

LakieLady · 27/10/2023 13:20

Also, Tory skinfintary ends up costing us all so, so much more in the long term. Example, don't build council housing, end up spending a fortune on HB for private LL and hotel accommodation for homeless people (to the point that some councils are on the edge of bankruptcy) . This is leaving aside the human misery it causes.

But if there was shedloads of social housing, demand for private rentals would fall and the Tory-voting BTL LLs wouldn't be as rich.

I wonder how many Tory MPs own property that they rent out? A fair few, I bet.

And I'd love to know how much of the money paid in benefits goes to pay LLs BTL mortgages. You never hear Tory voters griping about that, but they're happy rant on about "benefit scroungers with flat screen tv's". HB/housing costs in UC is invariably the biggest single element in every calculation I do for people who rent privately.

The security services have suggested an Autumn 2024 election could be a security risk as it's too close to the US elections.

Excellent. May it is then.

They don't have to hold an election until some date in January 2025. They might decide to cling on to maximise their pocket-lining opportunities.

Enterthewolves · 27/10/2023 13:32

I didn’t vote for Corbyn because I don’t live in Islington - I did vote Labour. We don’t live in the US and a general election is not a presidential election so people vote for parties, not people.

@TeenLifeMum that’s interesting - overall the nation was wealthier with better life outcomes under the Labour government than this one. Which decisions negatively impacted your family?

Bravo at taking time for the politics lesson. I appreciate your ability.

I’m still glad your party or its leader didn’t go down well with the electorate.

Dangerous views, especially now.

You're number 45 on the Lib Dem's target list so they think they're in with a chance. Is Adam Dance still your prospective candidate? Lib Dems make good constituency MPs generally I think. Good on local issues.

Alexandra2001 · 27/10/2023 13:55

People forget, that when the media doesn't do a job on a labour leader, they can be quite popular, look what Corbyn did to Teressa Mays majority in 2017?

That gave them all a wake up call and they made sure that the public associated Corbyn with terrorism, anti British, pro migrant, together with Brexit, ensured Bojo got in next time around.

But seriously, was Boris "Pepper Pig" Johnson really better for the UK than Labour? i don't think so, even Corbyn couldn't do as he liked, he'd have to carry the more moderate (i.e 90%) of MPs with him.

Can guarantee there would have been no parties at no10 with Corbyn, perhaps a jam making seminar?

We also wouldn't have had Truss, clearly far worse for UK than Corbyn.

I can’t see it personally. Winter elections reduce turnout and the two recent by elections show that the Tories really, really need to get their core support out on polling day. My money’s been on May 2024 for a while now.

Conservatives are currently the only party that know what a woman is. Greens and LibDems are entirely captured by trans ideology. I don’t think a man can ever be a woman. I believe we have to find a better solution than women ceding sporting podiums, places on an all female shortlists etc.

I may well hold my nose and vote Conservative. Trans ideology is authoritarian nonsense.

Me too. I just refuse to give any party my vote who does not know what a women is, and make them use unisex toilets just to avoid upsetting less than 1 percent of the population.

Well thank god the electorate didn’t see it your way.

Dangerous antisemitic pro terrorist views are not for me.

I haven’t always voted for the same party but I generally vote for a major one. I don’t owe you my voting record though, for whatever reason you feel you should have it.

Why is Johnson's racism just ignored always?

The other parties seem to be held to a much higher standard by both the press and public than the Tories. Why is this? The Tories should be held to just as high a standard as the other parties and both their voters and members should have given racist liar Johnson the boot in the same way Labour gave antisemite Corbyn the boot.

I live somewhere that has a Cat C prison with a capacity of around 900 and employed a lot of staff locally. They've all taken early retirement or got better jobs, and the prison is really struggling to recruit.

Because it's an area of high house prices, no-one can afford to live here on prison officer's wages, and commuting is challenging because there's minimal staff parking and parking anywhere close by is hideously expensive or hard to find.

Remember there there are people to whom that would be an indicator that the system is working,

I’m surprised people are still batting for Corbyn in this way.

Given the Middle East conflict, his antisemitic views and statements on Hamas.

bombastix · 27/10/2023 14:10

This is academic and in the past. Corbyn isn't in the Labour Party, the left there have been squashed into a cupboard as is normal when Labour actually get the bit between their teeth and try to win.

There is a question probably about how well Starmer would be doing if it wasn't for two things, which is party gate and Truss's economic doomsday policy. Quite frankly I don't think anywhere near as well. But also, the reason those things reasonate is that partygate is just such a "fuck you" the rules do not apply to me that will never shift from Johnson. And then Truss well, she was going to be the first Prime Minister to outwit the financial markets. And that will have hit a lot of central voters who have mortgages. If you want people to resent you then you hit them in the pocket. These two own goals are just what Labour needed. They tapped I directly to the criticism that people make of Conservatives which are a) they like rules for others and not for them and b) they are so rich that they don't understand ordinary financial struggles. In other words, the Conservatives did this to themselves. Labour are the beneficiaries but these are not forced errors, they are willed.

EasternStandard · 27/10/2023 14:15

For a long time we’ve coupled with and rely on the US should we need their support in return. Even in Blair years, especially then in a way.

I’d rather not have a leader who aligns with terrorists and removes that connection.

Firstly it won’t be appreciated and definitely not returned. I’m very glad the leader who would have done that is speaking at rallies and that’s it.

Alexandra2001 · 27/10/2023 14:19

When Trump (or one of his acolytes) wins next November, we will all see how much the USA values and supports the UK, NATO or even Ukraine.

bombastix · 27/10/2023 14:21

@Alexandra2001 - it's going to be interesting. Biden has to persuade people that Ukraine and Israel matter. That is tough. Trump isn't likely to take the same stance.

So what have the Tories done about unisex toilets? And how have they protected womens rights for the last 13 years?

EasternStandard · 27/10/2023 14:24

The whole of the EU should be concerned about NATO if Trump wins.

It still doesn’t mean Corbyn was ever a decent idea. Very much a dangerous one.

DuncinToffee · 27/10/2023 14:35

So far this week,

  • Peter Bone suspended for sexual misconduct

  • Brandon Lewis MP will take a 5th job on top of being an MP, with a firm significantly owned by 2 sanctioned Russian oligarchs

  • Crispin Blunt arrested on rape and drug charges

but Corbyn

You can post this if you want.

You just have.

As can I.

Imo the U.K. being presented with such a dangerous option at a GE given views and allies is no small thing.

If it doesn’t matter to you, it’s not really my issue.

bombastix · 27/10/2023 14:39

You wait for the WhatsApp! That is coming from the COVID Inquiry.

Expect lots of "language that was regrettable" and serious faces

EasternStandard · 27/10/2023 14:41

In fact given the posts it’s amazing how parochial this stuff has become. WhatsApp the order of the day.

DuncinToffee · 27/10/2023 14:44

I wonder if Sunak has found his whatsapps yet, you know the ones on the phone number he said he replaced but is still in use

I promise you will all love it. But also, be very careful about what you say about people on your messages. Good advice for teens and politicians.
