Hello,
I am a Jewish mum of two small children.
I think I'm posting on here to get a reassurance that there are some good people in this world. I am terrified to be openly Jewish in this country at the moment and I am terrified for my children's future here. This week I was told by a nanny agency 'it will be very difficult to get a nanny to work for a jewish family'. The security patrolling makes me feel nauseous; my neighbour's son attends a jewish school and was kicked on the bus for his obviously jewish school uniform. We aren't obviously Jewish 'looking' - we are not religious but yet I don't feel at all safe. The pro-Palestinian rally today threw up pictures of burning stars of davids (the antizionism isn't antisemitism thing is basically an excuse for saying what you like about jews and getting away with it). Red paint splattered over local jewish primary schools (again if it's not antisemitism, what do we have to do with it) and on top of all of this, the sinking, dismal feeling that in Israel, the only place as a Jew I would imagine feeling safe, 1300+ civilians were massacred in their beds/kidnapped/gang raped/worse.

I feel sick. I feel we are utterly hated here and unsafe there.

When I see videos of TFL tube drivers joining in with palestinian chants as if its a football anthem and flags of Jihad being waved in London I do wonder if I've missed something here. At the recent vigil for the Israeli victims people stood in silence. Singing. Crying. Praying for peace. And today I witness the complete opposite. I didn't see one mention of peace. I only saw hatred.

Half my family are NHS doctors and surgeons. Teachers. Proud of our Jewishness and proud of our Britishness. Why is it as a Jewish person in the UK i feel so utterly isolated and depressed? Many clients and non jewish friends have sent wonderful messages of support so perhaps it is just the vocal minority but it's a scary one nonetheless. AIBU in thinking that life is completely terrifying right now?

The hostages that were released came out looking well looked after

Well bravo to a couple of members of Hamas for managing not to rape, behead, burn, shoot one elderly lady.

Littlelucas · 24/10/2023 15:47

Also we must remember as a pp pointed out that Hamas still have this woman’s elderly husband. I’m pretty sure she’s been briefed by them with what to say and also what will happen to her dh if she doesn’t comply.

Spambod · 24/10/2023 15:55

Its easier and safer for people to criticise Israel and Jews because they know they are safe. The vast majority are virtue signalling idiots who have no clue of the history and situation between Israel and the surrounding territories. They know criticising Islamic extremist terrorism is unsafe, Charlie hebdo, the London bombings, Paris, Brussels, Manchester. We have a huge global problem with Islamic extremist terrorism. Sadly a lot of garzans support hamas.

@crimsonfleet @Trulywonderful

Yes I do realise a screenshot doesn't have audio and I would have posted the video had it allowed me to do so.
The link you sent about it had no video for me to watch.

It's funny how the negotiations to release the hostages were done by Egyptian and Qatari officials and NOT Israel. Do you really think Israel cares about its civilians? No. They do not.

I will say it again, so it's loud and clear.
No one should live in fear including Jews and neither should they be targeted. What happened on 7/10 was horrific and innocent people should not have been killed. I do believe that Israel have committed far worse crimes in Palestine and I 100% do not agree that what happened on 7/10 justifies the genocide of the Palestinians. It's not proportionate at all and I condemn the war crimes that are being committed by Israel.

ScaredMamaLondon · 24/10/2023 16:33

@sidesplittinglol so glad you condemn their war crimes. So glad you think Israeli war crimes are greater than those of Hamas (although by law, they aren't.)
The one laughable thing in that last comment was the bit where you said Israel doesn't care about its citizens. oh my god. you are so deep in that propaganda hole.
My sister is currently sitting in her bomb shelter in tel aviv with her two kids while rockets are fired at her from Gaza.
All Israeli citizens need access to a shelter by law. The protection of its citizens is everything to them. You think Hamas would 'negotiate' with Israel for its kidnapped citizens without there being a mediator? They just want to wipe them off the map. Your reasoning is more than flawed. It's offensive. And stupid.
Meanwhile in Gaza all aid money is spent on rockets, tunnels and weapons.
Stop with your inflammatory comments. It's exhausting.

Must've been a different article that had the video. She's quoted in the article though, although you'll probably just say that's a lie or manipulation or something, anything to preserve your narrative that Hamas are the victims and the kidnappers are lovely people.

@sidesplittinglol thanks for the threat 👌

How and where did I threaten you?

You take something and interpret it in the wrong way, put words in peoples mouths and then play the victim. It's astonishing.

What I meant was I hope one day your eyes are opened to the truth and that you're supporting what's right and that's justice for those who are being oppressed. There's nothing threatening about that at all.

sidesplittinglol · 24/10/2023 17:45

and conveniently it's been deleted so no one can see that I DIDN'T THREATEN YOU IN THE SLIGHTEST

muimper · 24/10/2023 17:48

I reported it. You did threaten OP. That was an extremely sinister comment

sidesplittinglol · 24/10/2023 17:49

I said your messages were flawed and offensive and stupid as you said the same to mine.

And that I wished you a good day enjoy your food water electricity in the comfort of your own home.

That I hope that one day your eyes are opened to see the truth and you're not on the wrong side of history.

Nothing in there was a threat.

Here's a bit of whataboutery for you. Even if Yocheved Lifschitz did say that, even if she was well looked after, even if she - a committed peace activist- did shake hands with her captor, what about the other hostages? The ones we have not seen. The ones not carefully looked after to look good on release. Hamas are not idiots. It is all part of a carefully orchestrated process to make murderers and rapists look like the good guys.

But apparently British Jews have no right to feel anxious.

Quite. How well did they treat the little autistic girl and her grandma who they took hostage?

What do you consider a far worse crime than tying crying children together, pouring petrol over them, setting them alight, and filming them screaming as they burn?

@IDriveMySupernova thank you and to the other comments…
I feel way better this week. Don’t get me wrong I feel quite broken at the state of the world but who doesn’t.
firstly there’s a petition circulating signed by various ex PMs etc just saying that they pledge their allegiance with Jews in this country. Nothing to do with politics- just tens of thousands of signatures of non Jewish people who say they will protect Jews from the tidal wave of antisemitism in this country. It’s here if anyone is interested. https://britishfriendsofisrael.org/
it’s just words right? But weirdly makes me feel better.
Secondly I’ve been helping a friend who has run a half term camp for Israeli children from the south who were evacuated in the wake of the attacks. Nothing to do with me blowing my own trumpet as I really feel I’ve not done enough but actually it’s given me some positivity as I’m taken aback by the resilience of some of these kids. One lost both grandparents, her aunts uncles cousins and listened to her own dog be shot dead and then burnt for fun (wtf). Kids are just amazing. And here she is playing netball wearing a bunch of clothes from random Londoners and doing her best.

and before anyone says I don’t care about Palestinian children (!!!!) I do. Just ready for it…

I’m so glad that you no longer feel your community is completely alone. I’ve signed the October declaration. If there is anything else us non Jews can do please let us know. I’m feeling a bit useless and angry at my naivety. There is strength in numbers. I’m a Christian praying 🙏 to the God who, in my view, is God of us all - Jew, Muslim, Christian - and non believer .

I think this comment sums it up. It’s very easy to be a virtue signaller. Much much harder to stand up to bullies. ( Although obviously Hamas are genocidal psychopaths- not just bullies - and that’s why I feel for Palestinians)

IrishLondoner · 24/10/2023 19:16

Hamas are using Palestinians as human shields. They knew what the response to their October 7th atrocity would be and they want a bloody apocalypse. In my view the only answer is to destroy Hamas.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/10/2023 19:44

Today there was a vigil for Israelis asking for the 200+ hostages back and mourning the murder of so many babies/children/young people. There was no anti muslim hate. There was no screaming. There was no burning flags. The plight of the Palestinian children was mentioned several times in speeches. The only singing was a song for peace

This comes as no surprise at all, @ScaredMamaLondon, but then as you suggested yourself we tend to hear much more from the hatemongers who shout loudest - as seen on this very thread among others

Be assured, though, that many of us stand firmly beside you, and see these so-called "Free Palestine" marches and similar hate fests for exactly what they are

mollyfolk · 24/10/2023 22:34

Finlesswonder · 23/10/2023 22:22

@mollyfolk
Ah yes, "being occupied". That was the reasoning behind not supporting the Allies during WW2 too, wasn't it?

No - it wasn’t completely about the north or the previous occupation of the republic. you could probably write an book on why Ireland was neutral during WW2 - a fear it would fire up the civil war again , a lack of money, a way to show independence from Britian. Ultimately 50,000 Irish fought in the British army.
