Why do they irrationally annoy me? Is it anyone else?

Aka "Smug Parents on Board"

Yes it’s basically announcing We Are Fertile!

Starshollowinside · 22/10/2023 08:31

Wow what an angry bunch!

I'm gonna get absolutely ripped to pieces here but I'll share regardless:

I have a baby on board sign. My reason (and you may call this paranoid etc) I drive a mini and several times when I have parked in parent and child spaces I have seen people watching me get out my car and I genuinely think they assume I am a CF using a space not intended for me because I don't have a giant 4x4 family car... until I walk round the other side and remove car seat or go to the boot to remove folded up pram. Having a sign to me displays that actually I do need some space to retrieve my baby and pram!

Whether or not people pay attention to it is outwith my control but it makes me feel slightly better 👍

We never used to have one but the below has happened to us four times now so we got one because we're a bit nervous now:

We'll be driving and a car will overtake us and break really harshly and suddenly when the road is open and clear and we have to slam the breaks. It happened

  1. Moving off from traffic lights when they went green
  2. A dual carriageway where the speed limit went from 40mph to 20mph because of roadworks
  3. Another normal 20mph road in east London
  4. Same road as number 3.

Also DH is a new driver and sticks to speed limits very carefully.

This sounds like you are just not s good driver

Delpf · 22/10/2023 08:37

I don't mind them. And actually, I DO have more patience if the person in front of me has a 'Baby on Board' sign and is doing 30 in a 40. Just like I have more patience for people with P plates or L plates. I understand that they're going slowly for a reason, not just because they're a crap driver and should have taken an easier route.

Just curious - why are you more patient with a BOB sign? Every life is equally valuable.

KimberleyClark · 22/10/2023 08:40

I’ve seen a Mother-to-be On Board sign too.

What is the reason for going slower with a baby on board? Your driving skills aren’t affected? You should be driving as normal.

It's not about a baby's life being more valuable, it's me understanding that someone is driving slowly because they've potentially got a sleeping baby on board that they don't want to wake. A 'wedding cake on Board' sticker/driving behind a tractor would prompt the same response.

SinnerBoy · 22/10/2023 08:47

Well, I'm out of the loop; I thought that the sunflower badges were a sign of support for Ukraine!

But why do you need to change your driving?

i drive cautiously around anyone so don’t need to change my driving because of a sign!

Iwantmyoldnameback · 22/10/2023 08:51

What is so wrong with being happy to have given birth? Never mind how many have done it before for that individual it's a unique experience.
I didn't have the signs but if someone had given me one I would have used it.
I still regard my children as my greatest achievement and I am grateful that I was able to get pregnant, carry them and give birth with comparative ease, not everyone is so lucky.

It's all hairpin bends and national speed limit where I live. I definitely drive more slowly if I have a sensitive passenger on board, and equally would drive more slowly (or consider taking a different route, if possible) if I had a baby on board.

If it was all A-roads/motorway, then yes, your driving shouldn't really be affected.

That only matters to you though and won't matter to strangers, who are driving behind you.

It shouldn’t be effected on any road. If you’re driving safely to start with then it doesn’t matter who else is in the car.

if you have to change how your driving because of having a baby in the car your either driving dangerously generally or being dangerously cautious!

If you always drive as though you've got a wedding cake in the boot, that's probably pretty annoying for the people behind you!

I drive safely for the road conditions. Who else is in the car makes no impact on my driving. It doesn’t need to.

I think you're really digging your heels in here/being obtuse. Maybe you wouldn't go more slowly to avoid jolting a baby awake when going over an uneven road surface, but I think other people do.

My original post: I am more understanding of people who drive well below the speed limit if they have a 'baby on board' sign or if there's some other obvious reason they're going slowly. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That really isn't normal or safe behaviour. Yes everyone should give every other driver appropriate space, but deliberately driving slower than the speed limit in good conditions is just bad driving and not excused by having a baby in the car.

But people are happy and proud about many things in life. They don't advertise it by putting signs in the back of their car: 'Just got my PHD.' 'Just got a big promotion' 'My child just won a scholarship'.

Mirandawrongs · 22/10/2023 09:28

It’s not an irrational annoyance

MeetyouatMidnight · 22/10/2023 09:42

@ComeOutSun

and you NEVER laugh or gripe at something minor?

that’s basically what I was trying to say.

If the road is too bumpy for the wedding cake, it isn't "in good conditions" situation.

Firsttimemum623 · 22/10/2023 09:47

Perhaps the key here is to consider the intended audience. Based on the comments so far, I suspect the majority of MN participants would consider their driving safe and therefore the signs pointless. But there are people out there who think it appropriate to drag race on public roads and overtake on blind bends... if THOSE people contain their desire to be utter morons when they see a BOB sign, then it's totally worth it!

I would also hope that when people see a BOB sign in a parked car (when their aren't parent & child places), that they might give you a bit more room and not park so close you can't get the door open, let alone get a baby in the car... however recent experience tells me people either don't pay attention or don't care.

Darkmode2 · 21/10/2023 10:56

I'm indifferent to them, hardly even notice them

Really don't understand the irrational hate and annoyance towards them

I find that more bizarre tbh

This.

To be infuriated by a sign in a car is peculiar.
