Baby on Board Stickers

Why do they irrationally annoy me? Is it anyone else?

I think it's the British way to eye-roll at excessive preciousness. It's a bit everyone create a lovely protective bubble around my very special offspring. Rather than an assumption that we treat all passengers as sufficiently worthy of safe driving.

They probably love it in the States. They might even upgrade the BOB to Daddy of Three Beautiful Little Princesses.

IDriveMySupernova · 22/10/2023 09:58

I remember asking my dad what the sticker meant when I was a child. He said ‘it means they’re driving like a twat because they’ve got children’ Smile

LolaSmiles · 22/10/2023 10:22

I have a baby on board sign. My reason (and you may call this paranoid etc) I drive a mini and several times when I have parked in parent and child spaces I have seen people watching me get out my car and I genuinely think they assume I am a CF using a space not intended for me because I don't have a giant 4x4 family car... until I walk round the other side and remove car seat or go to the boot to remove folded up pram. Having a sign to me displays that actually I do need some space to retrieve my baby and pram!
I think you're vastly over-estimating the amount of attention total strangers are paying to you.
Lots of people with children drive Minis, just like lots of people with children drive hatchbacks, estates, and other non-giant 4x4s. It's not an unusual club to not drive a 4x4.

As you say it makes you feel better then fine, but 99.9% of the population aren't going to pay any attention to a Mini pulling into a P+C space, and in the 10 seconds it takes you to get out your seat and open the boot to reveal a pram, the 0.1% are unlikely to be thinking "what a cheeky fucker, I'll stare to check there's a baby because a Mini driver is probably far too cool and child free to need an parent and child space".

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 22/10/2023 10:23

But there are people out there who think it appropriate to drag race on public roads and overtake on blind bends... if THOSE people contain their desire to be utter morons when they see a BOB sign, then it's totally worth it!

OMG just think about what you're saying for a minute.

Do you genuinely think anyone with such callous disregard for other road users, is going to give a mouse sized shit about a piece of plastic in a window even if they did happen to spot it??

Batshit.

feelingalittlehorse · 22/10/2023 10:53

Firsttimemum623 · 22/10/2023 09:47

Perhaps the key here is to consider the intended audience. Based on the comments so far, I suspect the majority of MN participants would consider their driving safe and therefore the signs pointless. But there are people out there who think it appropriate to drag race on public roads and overtake on blind bends... if THOSE people contain their desire to be utter morons when they see a BOB sign, then it's totally worth it!

I would also hope that when people see a BOB sign in a parked car (when their aren't parent & child places), that they might give you a bit more room and not park so close you can't get the door open, let alone get a baby in the car... however recent experience tells me people either don't pay attention or don't care.

I mean. There is optimism. And then there is this 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Not sure any self respecting boy racer, in their souped up car is going to ease off the gas because there’s a piece of plastic tat in a fellow road user’s rear window.

MeetyouatMidnight · 22/10/2023 09:42

@ComeOutSun

and you NEVER laugh or gripe at something minor?

that’s basically what I was trying to say.

These days, not really. If it doesn't involve my kids, it's all minor now.

Firsttimemum623 · 22/10/2023 11:07

If any of them are parents it might. There's no way to know & as I said before, it's not harming anyone to have one, so why not? I'd rather OPTIMISTICALLY have one & irritate some of you lot than not have one just to keep you happy 😏

fitzwilliamdarcy · 22/10/2023 14:54

They’re self-absorbed nonsense. No driver goes “oh, I can drive without care and attention now because I can’t see a BOB sign - I don’t mind maiming an adult, but draw the line at a baby!”

They’re there for smug people who want attention for procreating.

I’ve also found that BOB badges tend to be worn, not by women who are nervous to ask for a seat or wanting to help others identify them, but by confident women who use them as a tool for shaming others for not jumping up immediately at the appearance of a badge. I tend to think the badges are a bit self-absorbed too but there’s at least a point to them, unlike the car signs.

NewName122 · 22/10/2023 16:13

I don't have one but was told the baby ones were first intruded so that in a car crash or accident people automatically knew you had a baby in the car.

As has been said eleventy billion times on this thread alone, you were told wrongly.

Oh FFS!!!

LlynTegid · 22/10/2023 16:34

They don't annoy me, only thought is that if you loved your children you would never speed and not drive when unfit to do so. Just look at the number of unfit drivers taking their children to and from any school each day.

Oh FFS!!!

😂
Relentless isn't it?

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 22/10/2023 18:26

I saw one saying "ferrets on board"

Starshollowinside · 22/10/2023 19:32

Never said anything about being "far too cool" calm down 😂😂 I meant a mini is small, lacking in space and generally not what the majority would choose when they have kids and therefore the majority of people in parent and child spaces have larger cars.

But if it pleases all you deeply offended drivers il go rip the BOB sign out my car this instance!!

MinnieL · 22/10/2023 19:49

I really don’t see the problem with these signs

ManchesterLu · 22/10/2023 20:04

StEtienne93 · 21/10/2023 10:29

People don't even use them properly. You're only meant to display them when your baby is in the car, so that if you're in an accident, the emergency services will be aware to look for a baby in the wreckage. But most people display them all the time, so they could waste time trying to find a baby thats not there and potentially put themselves in danger.

Do you believe everything you read in viral internet posts?

The emergency services will check the whole car whether there's a sign or not, of course they will. They're not idiots.

Fifireee · 22/10/2023 20:32

To be fair unless they have a baby on board sticker I ran them.

LolaSmiles · 22/10/2023 21:21

It was the amusing idea that random strangers are going to see your car and then busy themselves assuming a Mini driver wouldn't be correctly using the parent and child spaces because Mini driver drives a mini, not a 4x4.

Families have cars in a range of sizes.

It's highly unlikely anyone is even going to register you parking, let alone give the headspace to speculate about your entitlement to park somewhere.

MeetyouatMidnight · 23/10/2023 07:05

@ComeOutSun well you are obviously morally superior to me then

Smug twat with functioning ovaries on board

fiftiesmum · 23/10/2023 08:18

Some of us have been driving long enough to remember the "disabled driver no hand signals" sign. Most people took notice of that if you were driving behind such a vehicle as it was the only sign you saw (most people now don't bother using their indicators until they have started changing direction)

Perhaps as well as baby on board (tired mum driving, kids fighting in the back) could have
Young person driving - possibly on drugs and looking for somewhere to empty the laughing gas canisters
Middle aged person driving - possibly had a couple of drinks and think they can get away with it
Angel sticker - just been on a speed awareness course so sticking exactly to the rules
Green ev sticker - busy trying to find a charging point

meatbaseddessert · 23/10/2023 08:24

I understand that they were introduced so if you were ever in an accident then the emergency services would .....

Just joking. Grin

LemonPeonies · 23/10/2023 08:50

There's been about a million of these threads from my time on MN and I'm still surprised there are so many people frothing at the mouth over a sign in a car that doesn't affect you. It used to mainly be infertile women but seems even those with kids get the rage over it now. There's a lot of things that annoy me in life and types of people and this isn't one of them. I find it really odd actually.
