You shouldn't be driving to the office when there will be a red weather warning

We are in the north east of Scotland. Tomorrow is supposed to be an Amber weather warning for wind and rain most of the day. Later it will apparently be even worse and turning to a red weather warning.
I suggested to my DH that he should maybe work from home tomorrow.
However, his bosses have said they need everyone in the office for a big project. Not likely to get home before the weather warning goes red either.
DH has to drive a pretty awful road to get home. Any other routes would have even more trees and are really twisty.
Surely they should work from home if the weather is going to be that bad?

That actually makes me feel a bit better. If the red warning is for rain and flooding then he'll probably have to turn back. I'd be way more worried about windy weather and trees falling down. He's a trooper tbh.

But plenty of people don’t turn back. We know people drive into floodwater (sometimes inadvertently) and it’s the biggest cause of deaths in flooding. Please remind him that even a foot of fast flowing water can move a car.

ActDottie · 19/10/2023 20:55

My work sent out texts to everyone encouraging them to work from home tomorrow because of the weather.

LadyTrunchbull · 19/10/2023 20:56

I think my pickup truck would manage it but I'd be telling them to get stuffed on principle.

coffeorbust · 19/10/2023 21:11

I know he's being unreasonable but he has a job to do and come hell or high water he's going to do it…send pics of landslides/floods that I'll show him and he'll still go

coffeorbust · 19/10/2023 21:16

Should I go with him?

Don't be ridiculous, of course you don't go with him

Fewer people out there the better

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 19/10/2023 21:20

I'm glad you're ok OP. Was thinking about this thread as more info came up on BBC news.

Puffalicious · 19/10/2023 21:21

Hey OP,

I hope you're doing fine. My DS17 made his way to Lawrencekirk today! He got a v early bus to Dundee from Glasgow to meet his gfriend who had an important hospital appointment. They predicted there'd be no buses back to Lawrencekirk, so her family member had taken her & drove her & DS home. He says it's wild! (Big smoke guy experiencing rural storm! He left here in shorts 🙈- so typically him).

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 19/10/2023 21:26

On the BBC website at 20:47 -
Deputy First Minister Shona Robinson said "weather conditions are set to "deteriorate seriously overnight" and the government was co-ordinating a national effort to ensure that people are safe.
People in red warning areas are urged not to travel unless they are advised to relocate to a rest centre."
(my bold)

TheShellBeach · 19/10/2023 21:40

I don't understand why some people are going to ignore this and make things even more difficult for the emergency services.
It isn't just foolish, it's remarkably selfish.

PickAChew · 19/10/2023 22:15

If he won't listen to you now, @coffeorbust there is no point putting yourself in a situation where you end up stranded with him because he still won't listen.

As has been pointed out, some people have no choice but to go out so they need people who do have a choice to heed the warnings and not make themselves someone else's job to fix.

Tarkan · 19/10/2023 22:28

It's sounding really awful out there right now. I hope everyone who has no choice and has to go out has clear roads and gets to work and home safely. Flowers

I've got quite a few friends in the country losing power now, some had it earlier too but it's definitely getting worse. Knock on wood we've been fine here that way though.

So sad to hear a woman has lost her life already too. Sad

Dibbydoos · 19/10/2023 22:54

@mandydandy completely agree. His employer isn't very H&S conscious. I def would nit go out if there was a red weather warning. That means there is a risk to life fgs.

I'd call in sick and say I'm wfh.

mandydandy · 19/10/2023 23:28

Im very concerned about my mum's house. She is now with us. My sister's isn't even in the red zone but they have been put on serious flood alert. It would be too far for her to come here in this weather so I think she might go to her in-laws. She has no power and now it looks like it might flood in Inverurie.
My house is going to resemble Noah's Ark soon between our cats and my mum's. 🙈

Hope your sister is okay. Is she going soon? What a huge worry for you all this is

mandydandy · 19/10/2023 23:37

@coffeorbust they have apparently shut the A90 from Dundee north because the flooding is so bad.

I've just seen this. DH saw one that didn't mention the route for the diversion, only that it was a 150 mile diversion. I said it sounded like they were having to go up the A9 and I'm awful with directions so I was shocked I was right. Blush

She can't decide because the kids are asleep but might be better to go now before the flooding reaches its peak. It is going to be a long night.

So stressful

Tarkan · 19/10/2023 23:44

I hope she'll be safe @mandydandy

I've got some friends in Inverurie but I don't know how their areas are for the risk. Sad

PlaidShirt · 19/10/2023 23:54

Hope you and all your family stay safe OP. Did the boss let everyone else work at home today in the end or did they have to commute through what sounds like a horrendous storm?

Red alert. Although, was surprised to see the postman today doing his rounds.
Buses running too, but most surprising of all was a friend's flight landed in Aberdeen airport from London with no issues.

I think your car insurance is null and void if you drive in a red weather alert?

You would have to check your policy.

Doing an activity against official advice not to do it is often uninsurable/excluded. If it was in your policy, you'd be up against the insurance company to prove - to their satisfaction - that your trip was essential.
