You shouldn't be driving to the office when there will be a red weather warning

We are in the north east of Scotland. Tomorrow is supposed to be an Amber weather warning for wind and rain most of the day. Later it will apparently be even worse and turning to a red weather warning.
I suggested to my DH that he should maybe work from home tomorrow.
However, his bosses have said they need everyone in the office for a big project. Not likely to get home before the weather warning goes red either.
DH has to drive a pretty awful road to get home. Any other routes would have even more trees and are really twisty.
Surely they should work from home if the weather is going to be that bad?

They might be shutting roads because of risk of landslip.

We don't get that many in UK, but I used to live somewhere where they weren't that uncommon following bad seasonal storms. They are lethally dangerous if they inundate buildings or your car is caught by one.

They'll want to keep people away for their own safety and (perhaps) reduce vibrations from vehicles (don't know if that's really a significant factor though).

And of course if there's any flooding in dips, they know that some twat will try to drive through it and they've got enough on their plate without needing to send someone to get them - with that car now blocking the road enough to make it more hazardous or even impassable to emergency services

There was a 150 mile diversion to get from Dundee to Aberdeen. Now the diversion has had a land slip apparently. Another day to stay in doors.

@coffeorbust they have apparently shut the A90 from Dundee north because the flooding is so bad.

Thanks for the info. He decided to see sense in the end and abandon the trip

Thank heavens.

A man in a vehicle is now missing in Maykirk, Aberdeenshire.
He drove through floods, I believe.

ListenLinda · 20/10/2023 12:00

A further red warning issued for tomorrow.
More heavy rainfall is expected.

Tryingmybestadhd · 20/10/2023 13:12

I hope you are all safe . We are on a hill so ok but was a hard night with all the wind and rain and knowing so many were being evacuated . Brechin is shocking and Mary Kirk has someone missing it seems . It proved to be a red warning for a reason .
my hubby just upped and went to work which I’m really annoyed with as I feel no company should be making people in .

That's not good news!

mandydandy · 20/10/2023 13:58

I don't think it is really possible to get much further north than Dundee by road now. I'm hoping folk don't go daft with things like bread and milk. My DH just went to get milk as we are running out but there is hardly any left. I presume deliveries have not been able to get through.
Awful news about the man in Marykirk. I hope he managed to get somewhere safe and is now out of phone battery.
Huge trees down beside our house and I've no fence left but water hasn't reached us.

Lots of people saying the A92 is ok between Dundee and Montrose.

Apparently the A90 Forfar to Dundee has reopened but people are still being told to take care obviously.

TheShellBeach · 20/10/2023 14:18

There's been a third death.
A man was hit by a falling tree in his car at Forfar.
Sadly, pronounced dead at the scene.

linsey2581 · 20/10/2023 15:38

@TheShellBeach The man from Marykirk has been missing 3am this morning. There have only been 2 deaths.

Edited

BBC is reporting 3 deaths

  • the woman swept away
  • a man trapped in a car in flood water
  • a man whose vehicle was hit by a falling tree

It really is the time to stay put where you are. And never drive through floods. Or try to walk through them either, as the currents can be unpredictably strong

linsey2581 · 20/10/2023 18:49

@RoseAndRose the man in the car has not yet been found therefore not confirmed death. However itv have also said 3 deaths as someone in Englandshire has died.

Scottishskifun · 20/10/2023 19:00

Hope everyone is safe and ready for round 2 tonight we lost power yesterday afternoon only properly back on a few hours ago.
Our sandbags have already been tested and looks like tonight will be the same. Fence has gone and some panels collided with the roof but all OK thankfully. It's incredibly loud still and I'm knackered through lack of sleep!

For anyone not in Scotland wondering what the fuss is about Google Marykirk flood and have a look at the before and after of the road!

coffeorbust · 20/10/2023 19:36

Thinking of you tonight Scottish. We're in the central belt and it's a bit gusty and rainy. Can't imagine what you're going through. Stay safe and if you can please keep us updated

Just spoke to a friend of mine, her dad took ill today and by the time they got through floods to get him to the hospital he never made it 😢

coffeorbust · 20/10/2023 19:52

God it's just awful. Your poor friend x

We have got off lightly compared to those in Brechin and other areas. We are dry currently and warm thanks to having a wood burner.

We are fairly used to storm season but this is the worst I can remember in terms of battering back to back and never 2 consecutive red warnings. DS1 has asked if we can go to the playpark and could he take his kite......sure kid if we want to take off with it! Will be more indoor chaos instead might hunt out the covid lockdown softplay stuff to keep the kids entertained!

There isn't anything we can do above what we have just got to wait it out then sort it out later and cost up paying for repairs versus insurance claim!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 20/10/2023 20:25

So Montrose, which is very close to marykirk is actually getting off fairly lightly I think. I was expecting to have a lot more water but today, our path and pavement is dry.

It definitely feels like it's going to be worse tonight/tomorrow.

I feel for brechin and marykirk and also the bridge of dun is all flooded too. It is actually the worst we've ever had it (except Montrose itself, thankfully!)

coffeorbust · 20/10/2023 21:07

Thanks for the update Scottish Hopefully you're all hunkered down and safe for the night. I've lived in Scotland my whole life and have lived through some pretty horrendous weather but this is on a different level. Was driving back from Stirling on the M9 2 weeks ago and both lanes in each direction were under water.. the road from our house to Falkirk was completely submerged haven't ventured out today but I m guessing it's the same. As you pointed out it's just back to back storms. Anyway stray safe and don't be flying any kites x

I'm just down the road in Arbroath and feel we've got off quite lightly too so far. We're just outside this second red warning this time too.

I'm in all the Aberdeenshire and Angus FB groups and it's just awful seeing all the floods and destruction. The Bridge of Dun seems to have collapsed in the middle and I hope the whole thing doesn't go.

I know it feels like such a silly thing when people have lost their lives and had such damage to their homes and belongings but my favourite local tree has fallen down and damaged the lovely little wooden bridge beside it (on the path to the village of St Vigeans). I've taken so many photos of the tree and bridge through the years and through different seasons and weather, I had a very weird attachment to it because of that.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 20/10/2023 22:19

@Tarkan oh my parents are in letham grange and they told me a few trees are down. One large one near them.

Yes the bridge of dun is apparently all cracked too
Marykirk road is gone!
