You shouldn't be driving to the office when there will be a red weather warning

We are in the north east of Scotland. Tomorrow is supposed to be an Amber weather warning for wind and rain most of the day. Later it will apparently be even worse and turning to a red weather warning.
I suggested to my DH that he should maybe work from home tomorrow.
However, his bosses have said they need everyone in the office for a big project. Not likely to get home before the weather warning goes red either.
DH has to drive a pretty awful road to get home. Any other routes would have even more trees and are really twisty.
Surely they should work from home if the weather is going to be that bad?

Those of us who live in Scotland know only too well that our roads and infrastructure are not fit for purpose. Extreme weather makes them lethal.

The flooding, landslides, power cuts, trees down....................and all on little single track roads, and the two-way traffic roads which cover most of Scotland.

Stay at home until advised otherwise. We're in Argyll and we've already had two power cuts - and the warning hasn't really come into force yet.

I'm in North Aberdeenshire and the wind is battering the side of the house. Its bringing back scary memories of storm Arwen when our steading roof blew off and nearly hit our house. We had a power cut for 5 days, I was 9 months pregnant and had a toddler. I'm really hoping all our outbuildings stay in one piece and that our power stays on but I'm not so sure it will. There are trees down on the roads all around us.

@EvilElsa it will be expensive but nothing we can do about it right now.

No, just stay safe that's the important thing.

Azaleah · 19/10/2023 15:04

Would his employers sign a term of responsibility assuming all costs and liability in case of an accident on his way to or from work? I don't think so, sod them. Stay safe 🤗

It is scarily similar to Arwen. I'm still shocked when I see the destruction it caused. Hope the poor trees cope this time.

I hope you're all OK, I left at 3am, arrived safely in Scunthorpe at 9 this morning.

Tarkan · 19/10/2023 15:11

Well DH is still being expected to drive a bus it seems. Every other service is getting stopped at 6pm now but he's meant to start a 4 hour run at 4pm. He's getting ready to head in now and I really hope he ends up coming home again.

mandydandy · 19/10/2023 15:15

Trakan, I really hope it isn't a double decker. That wouldn't be fun in this.

Can he refuse?

Tarkan · 19/10/2023 15:22

It's not a double decker but it's only 9 inches shorter than one. I don't know if he'll get a disciplinary for refusing but he's really not happy. I won't know what's happening until he contacts me after he reaches the depot. My heart is in my mouth over this.

54isanopendoor · 19/10/2023 15:23

Red warning is a 'danger to life'.
It's Amber leading up to it & the weather timings aren't always accurate.
I'm in the Borders & it's already turning nasty here.
Don't travel unless you have to, it's a pain for the emergency services too.

And then he's got to get home.

Mochudubh · 19/10/2023 15:41

DS just got in, having left work early (self-employed). He normally takes a short cut along a non-adopted road but had to turn back as there were 2 trees down and go the main road.

I have to take the dog out in a bit and will be gearing up like Ranulph Feinnes just to go round the block.

Tarkan · 19/10/2023 15:55

DH texted me, he's having to drive the bus to Dundee and back (out of service on the way back). Better than all the way to Perth and back at least but I'm still worried when I hear the wind hitting our house. He felt the wind last night catching the bus and that was nothing compared to now. At least he'll be finished before 6 now.

Tarkan · 19/10/2023 17:24

His bus never showed up, one was broken down and taken straight to the depot and the other isn't back in town yet so he's just waiting for a lift back to the depot and he's coming home again. I'm so relieved.

I've made sure we have a few beers in the fridge for him. Thankfully he's off work tomorrow so we don't need to worry about any of this tomorrow.

PickAChew · 19/10/2023 17:34

A relief for both of you, @Tarkan

Tarkan · 19/10/2023 17:50

Thanks @PickAChew - definitely a massive relief. That's him just in the door so I can relax now.

LizM66 · 19/10/2023 17:56

Absolutely agree with you. If they want to risk own necks fine, but he is part of your family not theirs. BW

Gottaworkwhatever · 19/10/2023 18:02

You’re very lucky, I’m envious. Stay safe

ListenLinda · 19/10/2023 18:38

Hope everyone affected by all the warnings stays safe.
It sounds like it’s going to be horrendous.

RandomButtons · 18/10/2023 16:30

Dunno, how bad are the winds forcast to be?

A red warning is rare and means a threat to life!

fetchacloth · 19/10/2023 19:11

Pamcakey · 18/10/2023 16:40

I remember reading somewhere that offices were insisting people came in incase their internet went down.

I agree with OP

That's really irresponsible. Those employers should be named and shamed.😒
Besides, these days most people have internet in their own homes so those people that need to, can work from home surely?

Ilovesweets88 · 19/10/2023 19:27

Look let’s be truthful here, you want to wear pyjamas and chill out and work from home don’t u with a nice cuppa coffee and your slippers on, do yourself a favour ring in sick and worry about it Monday :) xx
